INTRODUCTION :

In this assignment, we were assigned to prepare one report based on the construction site visit that involves 3 subjects which are Measurement 1, Construction technology 1 and Building material.

This site visit is organised by our Measurement 1 lecturer, Sr. Ang Fuey Lin. The construction site we visited is The Andes which located at between the borderline of Puchong and Bukit Jalil., The construction site visit was held on 26th of June 2015 (Friday). On that day, about 58 students attended this site visit. We were then divided into 2 group, each group contains 29 of students. We reached the construction site at 9am sharp with the suitable attire (safety helmet, long pants, and sport shoes/safety shoes)

Before we enter the site, we were briefed by Mr James Siow (Project Manager) about the rules and regulation of the site. Then we were split into smaller group which lead by the supervisor and tour the site.

The Andes consists of 2 towers. Tower 1(Block A – 26 storey) consisting 137 units and Tower 2 (Block B – 25 storey) consisting 216 units with various layout types, the habitat is ideally designed to meet everyone need.

OBJECTIVE :

To experience the actual work field / working environment and learn more about the life of being a Quantity Surveyor.

To understand the practical aspect of construction techniques in comparison to the theory aspect in books and its application on site.

To identify various types of building materials and technology on site.

To gain awareness of the importance of safety on site and understanding of safety problems and site conditions.

To recognize the items measurable for sub-structure and reinforced concrete frame works.

To observe the usage of the construction equipment on the site such as crane and bar bending machine.

To have a clearer image about how the construction carry out on the construction site.

To gain more on site knowledge to overcome the uncertainty circumstances e.g: Weather.

CONTENT / TECHNICAL OBSERVATIONS:

On 26th June 2015, when we reached the construction site, the 1st thing we saw was the project information board which placed outside the fence and right in front of the site. The main function of the project information board is to show/state all contractors that involve in this particular project and all the information/detail about the people/company that involving in this project. Other than that, there are a few temporary works were installed on the site. Container is act as accommodation for the workers, provide shelter place to let them resting. Temporary storages were built for keeping all the material safe and dry (avoid contact with water/raindrop) for example cement. The site is fenced by the vertical hoarding. The close- boarded fence is used to prevent or avoid the outsider / unauthorised person to enter or access to the site, serve as security purpose. Scaffolding is set up to hold and support the worker in the site. Besides, we can found out that there are a lot of plants and machineries such as tower-crane, excavator, mobile-crane, rebar bending machine and generator inside the site and each of them serve their own purpose.

At the site, we saw the actual Re-bars and learn how to differ it between High tensile bars and Mild steel bars. Other than that, we also saw the different kind of formwork which is timber form work but added with hollow-iron strips to strengthen the formwork. In addition we also asked the supervisor about the concrete grade for particular item which are column (grade 45), foundation/pilecap (grade 35), beam (grade 35) and slab (grade 35).

CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY

1. Identify and explain the type of foundation involved in the particular site.

The type of foundation used in this project “The Andes” is pile foundation. Pile foundations are deep foundations. They are formed by long, slender, columnar elements typically made from steel or reinforced concrete. Pile foundations are principally used to transfer the loads from a superstructure, through weak, compressible strata or water onto stronger, more compact, less compressible and stiffer soil or rock at depth, increasing the effective size of a foundation and resisting horizontal loads. In simple words, it is the strongest foundation among all other type of foundation. Pile foundation is suitable for mostly all of the

type of soil. Pile foundation is widely used for large structures. In this particular project, bored pile is used due to its minimal vibration, they can be used where headroom is limited, there is no risk of heave and it is easy to vary their length.

Advantages Disadvantages Length can be readily varied to

suit varying ground conditions. Concrete is not placed under ideal

conditions and cannot be subsequently inspected.

Can be installed in very large diameters.

Water under artesian pressure may pipe up pile shaft washing out cement.

End enlargement up to two or three diameters are possible in clays.

Cannot be readily extended above ground level especially in river and marine structures.

Material of piles is not dependent on handling or driving conditions.

Boring methods may loosen sandy or gravely soils. Sinking piles may cause loss of ground in cohesionless soils, leading to settlement of adjacent structures.

Can be installed in very long lengths.

High cost (most expensive when comes to compare with other type of foundation)

Building Materials

a) Identify the type of reinforced concrete grade of the following building elements: 1) Column 2) Beam 3) Slab 4) Foundation

Based on the briefing from the site supervisor, we found out that there are 2 type/grade of concrete grade are used in this particular construction project which are : grade 35 and grade 45.

BUIDING ELEMENTS: CONCRETE GRADECOLUMN 45

BEAM 35SLAB 35

FOUNDATION(PILECAP) 35

CONCRETE GRADE

ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES

Ratio(Cement, Sand

& Aggregate)35 Cheaper (compared

to grade 45) More common used

in construction Low maintenance

cost

Low compressive strength compared to G45

Easy cracks under service load

3.15 : 2.62 :2.67

45 High compressive strength

More suitable used in high rise building

Size of construction/building reduced due to strong compressive strength of concrete(reduce in volume of concrete.)

High cost Do not retain heat

very well

CONCLUSION / LEARNING OUT COME

After this construction site visit, I had gained countless of valuable information and knowledge about the construction field. Besides, the site visit provides me a precious chance to gain the knowledge which I can’t learn from the textbooks nor lecture. Now, I have a clearer image about how does the construction project carries out.

In this visit, I have exposed to varieties of tools and machineries that we seldom know about it. Other than that, we also learned function and application of each tools and machineries in the construction site.

Through this visit I have learned that is not easy to manage a site no matter it is a big or small project, hence, there is a huge responsibility on the shoulder of Project manager. Moreover , we can saw the real teamwork in this visit, it’s not only people to people, it is also between the machine to people. If only if work as a team, the project will be process will smooth and without any problems.

In conclusion, this site visit had greatly enhanced my knowledge about the construction site, I’m feeling grateful to have the chance to visit “The Andes”. I wish there is more visit like this in the future and last but not least, safety come first.
