West Virginia Opens 2014-15 Season Against Monmouth Tonight’s 2014-15 season opener will be televised live by West Virginia Media. It will air on WBOY (Clarksburg), WTRF-DT3/ My OV (Wheeling/Steubenville), WVNSDT2/FOX (Beckley), WJAL (Chambersburg, Pa.) and livestreamed on WVUsports.com. The Mountaineers own a 90-15 all-time record in season openers, including a 96-9 record in home openers. WVU returns six letterwinners, including four starters, from 2013-14. Starters from last season include Juwan Staten (33 starts), Devin Williams (31 starts), Kevin Noreen (20 starts) and Nathan Adrian (18 starts). Senior Gary Browne (97 career games played) and sophomore Brandon Watkins (32 games played) also return for the Mountaineers. Bob Huggins, with 740 career wins, is in 17th place on the NCAA Division I all-time winningest coaches list. He needs one win to tie John Chaney for 16th place. Huggins became the 20th Division I head coach to win 700 career games. Huggins’ record now stands at 740-302 entering his 33rd season as a head coach. Huggins is the third-winningest active coach behind Mike Krzyzewski and Jim Boeheim. West Virginia is 77-25 in the WVU Coliseum under Bob Huggins, including a 40-22 mark in league games at home. WVU is 487-145 (.772) all-time at the WVU Coliseum and 108-28 at the WVU Coliseum in the last nine seasons. Under Bob Huggins in the WVU Coliseum, WVU is averaging 77.8 ppg, while holding its opponents to 62.8 ppg. West Virginia is 71-5 at home against non-conference teams in the last 11 years, including 52 of its last 55. West Virginia is 67-22 in non-conference regular season games under Bob Huggins, including a 37-3 mark at home. West Virginia is 98-28 against non-conference teams in regular season games in the last 10 seasons. WVU has won 96 of its last 123 games against unranked teams, including 49 of its last 56 at the WVU Coliseum. West Virginia has made at least one 3-point field goal in 488 consecutive games. Juwan Staten was named the Big 12 Conference Preseason Player of the Year as well as numerous All-America teams. Staten has scored 14 points or more in 24 of his last 25 games, including 20 points or more in nine of his last 19 games. Staten was at or near the top in just about every statistical category in the Big 12 last year, including scoring (first), field goal percentage (third), assists (second), assist-to-turnover ratio (second), steals (eighth) and minutes played (first). Staten had three double-doubles last season (points and rebounds). He had six games with nine or more assists. Staten (598 points, 186 rebounds and 193 assists) became the first player in school history to score 500 points, grab 150 rebounds and dish out 150 assists in a season. Staten was named to the All-Big 12 First Team and All-Defensive Team. He was the fourth player to earn All-Conference First Team honors under Huggins and WVU’s seventh to do so since 2006. Staten’s 598 points scored were the 17th most all-time in a season by a WVU player. His 193 assists tied for the second-most assists by a WVU player in a season. Devin Williams posted eight double-doubles and had nine double-figure rebounding performances last season. Williams’ eight double-doubles were the third most all-time by a WVU freshman. Williams’ eight double-doubles tied for the fifth most by a Big 12 player last season. He also tied for the most double-doubles by a Big 12 Conference freshman with Kansas’ Joel Embiid. Williams had 238 rebounds last season, the fourth most all-time by a WVU freshman. West Virginia has allowed its opponent to shoot 50 percent or better only 35 times under Bob Huggins (241 games). West Virginia has won 66 of its last 76 games when holding its opponents to 69 points or less. West Virginia is 44-3 under Bob Huggins when shooting 50 percent or better from the field. West Virginia is 113-23 under Bob Huggins when leading at halftime. West Virginia is 118-13 under Bob Huggins when leading by 10 or more points in a game. Academic Success• Twenty-nine of the last 30 seniors on the WVU men’s basketball team have graduated on time or early since 2004.• In 2014, Kevin Noreen was named to the Academic All-Big 12 Men’s Basketball first team for the second year in a row while Gary Browne was named to the second team. Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year• Senior point guard Juwan Staten was named the Big 12 Conference Preseason Player of the Year, in a vote by the league’s head coaches. He was also one of two players who were a unanimous selection to the All-Big 12 Conference Preseason First Team.• So far this season, Staten has been named to numerous preseason All-America teams: CBSSports.com Second Team, Sporting News Third Team, Athlon Sports Third Team, Blue Ribbon Magazine Third Team and an Associated Press Honorable Mention selection.• Staten was tabbed as the ninth-best player in college basketball this season by ESPN.• The Dayton, Ohio, native has been named to the Bob Cousy Award Watch List. Last year, he was one of 23 finalists for the award.• Last season, Staten was named to the All-Big 12 First Team and to the All-Defensive team, in a vote by the league’s head coaches.• Staten averaged 18.1 points per game, averaging 37.3 minutes per contest.• Staten had five assists or more in 23 of 33 outings, with one turnover or less on 16 occasions.• Staten has had 14 points or more in 24 of his last 25 games, including 20 points or more in nine of his last 19 games.• Staten was at or near the top in just about every statistical category in the Big 12 last year, including scoring (first), field goal percentage (third), assists (second), assist-to-turnover ratio (second), steals (eighth) and minutes played (first).• Staten had three double-doubles last season (points and rebounds). Williams Looks To Build Off Last Season• Sophomore Devin Williams looks to start this season right where he left off last season.• The Cincinnati, Ohio, native averaged 8.4 points and led the team in rebounds at 7.2 boards per game.• Williams posted eight double-doubles and had nine double-figure rebounding performances last season.• Williams’ eight double-doubles were the third most all-time by a WVU freshman.• Williams’ eight double-doubles tied for the fifth most by a Big 12 player last season.
