LAST TIME OUTThe No. 13 Eastern Oregon University men’s basketball team finished its regu-

lar season with a win at The Evergreen State College Saturday, 95-89. Eastern was ledby Thomas McCarthy’s 21 points. The senior surpassed Ryan Orton’s 15-year-old three-pointers in a single season record, as he finished 6 of 12 from behind the arc. McCarthyhas now made 94 three-pointers this season, and needs 17 more to break MarkCarollo’s career mark. Jamar Johnson added 17 points for EOU. The junior was 11 of14 from the free-throw line. JC Cook chipped in 16 points on 6 of 12 shooting from thefield. Cody Thurmond dished out four assists, and Jeff Ranstrom grabbed 10 rebounds.Evergreen shot 42 percent from the field, while EOU made 51 percent of its attemptsfrom the field.

ABOUT THE CCC TOURNAMENTThe preseason conference favorite, Oregon Tech, rolls into the CCC tournament

as the regular season champion and top seed. The Owls host Concordia in the firstround. EOU and Southern meet in the 2-7 game. Warner Pacific and Northwest finishedtied in conference play, but it was the Knights that swept the season series, thus givingthem the higher seed nod. Third-seeded WPC welcomes six-seed Corban, and TheCollege of Idaho travels to Northwest in the 3-6 game.

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The No. 11 Eastern Oregon University

men’s basketball team routed Southern Oregon University,

95-53.

Jamar Johnson scored a career-high 30 points and grabbed

10 rebounds to lead the Mountaineers (16-4) (8-3). The

junior became the first EOU men’s basketball player to

score 30 points in a game since Neil Fryer scored 41 points

at Cascade College on Jan. 24, 2009. Johnson was 10 of 11

from the field, including 4 for 4 from behind the perimeter.

The 30 points were the highest an EOU player has scored

this season. It was Johnson’s first double-double while at

Eastern.

EOU’s Thomas McCarthy added 16 points after shooting 4 of 6 from three-point range. Travares

Peterson and Jason Mumm each scored 11 points. JC Cook finished with 10 points. Cody

Thurmond threw five assists. The Mountaineers shot 50 percent from the field, 13 of 29 from

behind the arc, and 16 for 21 from the free-throw line.

After making only one of its final 16 shots from the field to close the game the previous night,

Eastern Oregon began Saturday’s game 0 for 4 from the field. The Raiders, who were receiving

votes in the NAIA Div. 2 Top 25 poll entering the game, got out to a 4-0 lead. EOU responded with

a 15-0 run.

A Johnson free-throw, that finished a four-point play, gave Eastern its largest lead of the first half,

54-17, with 1:35 left until halftime. EOU outscored Southern, 24-2, in points off of the bench in the

first. A McCarthy three-pointer gave the Mountaineers their largest lead of the game with 4:39

remaining in regulation, 90-44.

Eastern Oregon won its fifth straight game over SOU behind a 21-10 fastbreak point advantage,

and a 42-26 bench points advantage. The Mountaineers outrebounded Southern, 49-44. SOU

committed 16 turnovers to EOU’s 14. Eastern also had a 21-11 assist advantage in the game.

ASHLAND, Ore. – The No. 8 Eastern Oregon University men’s basketball team beats Southern

Oregon, 80-68, Friday.

Southern Oregon had the lead for a little over two minutes early in the game, but Eastern con-

trolled the tempo for almost the entire game. The Raiders led 12-7 after a Jordan Highland layup.

Eastern responded with a pair of back-to-back three pointers to take the lead back. SOU regained

the lead and had its last lead at the 14:09 mark of the first half, 19-17.

The Mountaineers slowly stretched their lead until EOU led 43-33 after a pair of Cody Thurmond

free throws with 3:09 left in the half. A layup from Anthony Brown as time expired gave Eastern a

46-35 halftime lead.

Southern opened the second half on a 9-0 run to cut the lead to two points, it was as close as

they would get before time expired. A Kyllian Wood layup gave Eastern Oregon its largest lead of

the game, 76-57, with 5:51 left in regulation.

Thomas McCarthy led EOU with 19 points on 7 of 15 shooting from the field. The senior was 4 for

9 from behind the perimeter and threw a team-high four assists. Jason Mumm and JC Cook fin-

ished with 14 and 13 points respectively. Travares Peterson had a game-high nine rebounds.

Eastern shot 44 percent from the field, while SOU was 42 percent. The Mountaineers are now 10-

0 when they shoot better than their opponents this season. EOU entered the game as the second

best shooting team from behind the arc in the country at 40 percent. Friday Eastern Oregon fin-

ished 38 percent from three-point range, making 8 of 21. For the first time this season, EOU and

its opponent had the same rebounds at 39.

Highland scored a game-high 20 points to lead Southern. He was 8 of 14 from the field. Kyle

Tedder added 17 points for the Raiders. Kellen Hawley grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Drew Herrera had three assists. SOU finished 29 percent from field. Southern Oregon entered the

game receiving votes in the NAIA Div. 2 Top 25 poll.

DIALING LONG DISTANCEEastern is hitting its share of shots

from behind the perimeter this season. TheMountaineers are first in NAIA Div. 2 in three-pointers made per game (10.28), and secondin total three-pointers made (288). EOU isninth in the country in three-point percentage(38%). Jamar Johnson is third in the countrywith his 46 percent shotting from three-pointrange. Thomas McCarthy is seventh in NAIADiv. 2 with 94 three-pointers, making 3.3 pergame which is seventh in the nation.

RECORD WATCHThe Mountaineers are doing their

share of setting new records this season.EOU has already broke the school mark forthree-pointers in a single season nad singlegame records of threes made, points, andrebounds. Eastern is 129 points shy of break-ing the record for points in a season. ThomasMcCarthy broke Eastern Oregon’s 15-year-oldschool record of 88 three-pointers in a singleseason. The senior has hit 94 of his 223three-pointers this season. The Prineville,Ore. native has connected on 189 of his 478career three-pointers. Mark Carollo holds theschool career record when he made 210 ofhis 606 shots.

THE TWENTY WIN CLUBEastern has clinched its fifth straight

20-win season. Before the five-year streak,the Mountaineers had four 20-win seasons inthe 81-year history of men’s basketball, withthe last coming in 1965-66. This season’ssquad became the 20th team to reach 16 winsin school history. The 2007-08 team had theschool’s best record at 26-6. That team was17-3 after 20 games, and started 25-4.

climbed to No. 11 in the NAIA Div. 2 Top 25 Monday. TheMountaineers climbed two spots after finishing the regular sea-son with a pair of victories at then-ranked No. 18 NorthwestUniversity last Friday and Evergreen State the following night.EOU received 270 points in the poll, 18 more than last week.Eastern rides the longest winning streak in the CascadeCollegiate Conference, seven games, into the postseason.Eastern appears in the Top 25 for a school-record 21st straighttime. The Mountaineers have been in the Top 25 in 27 of the last28 polls. EOU has been in the Top 25 in every poll dating back tolast season’s preseason poll on Oct. 26 when it received votes.The Mountaineers had their best preseason ranking in the 2008-09 season when they started at No. 6. EOU climbed to No. 3 inthe national poll that season, the highest in school history.

LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARIESEastern Oregon is one of five teams to have made it

to the past three Sweet 16 rounds at the NAIA Div. 2 NationalTournament. Two programs in those five, Oregon Tech andEOU, are from the Cascade Collegiate Conference. There areonly a dozen teams that have made the national tournamentin each of the past three years, including Eastern.
