Tides!By Marin and McKenzie!

Page 2: Maz Kenz

What are tides caused by?

Tides are caused by the gravitational pull of the moon, sun and rotation of the earth.

The key to tides is the changing strength of the moon’s gravitational pull on different parts of the world.

The cause of the tides during the day is the moon’s orbit around the earth.

The moon pulls on the water closest to it, causing high tides and low tides.

When the sun, moon and earth form a straight line, we notice greater differences between the high and low

tides. This is called a spring tide.

Different types of tides and there definitions

• SPRING TIDES: a spring tide is when the earth, moon and sun form a straight line. This causes greater differences between tides.

• NEAP TIDES: a neap tide is when the earth, moon and sun form a right angle triangle. This causes smaller differences between tides.

• HIGH TIDES: a high tide is when the moon is pulling the water from the closest part of the globe to it. This causes the water to rise.

• LOW TIDES: a low tide is when the moon is not pulling the water from that certain part of the globe. This causes the water to fall.

Facts

• When there is a Full Moon or a New Moon, the gravitational pull on the earth is dramatically stronger so the high tides are higher and the low tides are lower.

• Tides are exactly 12 hours apart, meaning if the low tide was at 4am the next low tide would be 4pm.

• A low tide and a high tide are exactly 6 hours apart.

• The moon has more effects on the tides then the sun because it is closer.
