Tidewater DistrictMAY 2013
Since 1960, I have enjoyed following
Presidential Elections, Senate and House
elections and elections of state Governors.
I always said if I had lots of money I would
spend it on a campaign to win an elected
office. I always liked the quote from
Robert Kennedy that “one person can
make a difference.” However, my son
reminds me that I tend to not have a lot
of patience and am not diplomatic when I
get upset that something I want to have
happen, doesn’t happen. So why do I
write this article?
My time as Lt Governor is now at the half
way mark of my term. Makes me think of
President Obama’s second term coming to
the half way mark as President. He knows
his time will end soon. So do I.
This is a heads up to the Tidewater District
that in October we will be electing our
next slate of officers. Start thinking of
someone you might want to nominate for
the positions; the September meeting will
be a good time for nominations and the
October meeting should be a time for the
elections. The elected officers will take
their office in Nov.
In 1968 President Lyndon Johnson
shocked the nation when he would not
and did not except the nomination of his
party for election for President in 1968.
This next comment does not rank with that
announcement, but I will not be moving
up to the Governor position in November.
Let’s just say I have my reasons and district
members can use the next months to find
candidates that want to serve, can serve
and are willing to serve.
I have been a VPPA member since 1994. I
will continue to be a member, attend
seminars and conventions, and look
forward to seeing Tidewater members
along with members from other districts.
I wish all well and look forward to seeing
you around the district.
Best wishes to all, Richard
From the Desk of the Lt Governor-Richard E. St.Peter

TIDEWATER SPOTLIGHT: “My Love Of Photography”
by William (Bill) Grace
My love for photography goes back a long ways, matter of fact, when I started getting into photography there was only black and white film and the only way you could produce a picture print in color was to perform a process called “Dye Transfer”, which required you to produce three negatives, one produced with a red filter, one with a green filter and one with a blue filter.
With these three negatives it took an elaborate process of printing and transferring these different images on a special photographic paper to produce a color picture. The process took well over two hours to produce an image that resembled the actual subject. Needless to say, not many people could afford that type of picture in an 8x10 size.
I started taking pictures when I was about 15 years old with my first camera. A Kodak Brownie Reflex that took 12 pictures on a roll of 127 film.
I still have that camera today, but no 127 film.
Later, during my high school years I took, developed and printed pictures of my high school friends at dances, picnics and other social events- selling them to fund my school needs.
From the Brownie camera I graduated to my first 35mm camera, which was an Argus C-3. It was shaped like a small brick. Then I got a 35mm Leica IIIc. When I was in my senior year of High School, I got an after school job at a Camera store in downtown Pittsburgh. That’s where I got seriously into photography. That’s where I met my mentor, a Press Photographer for a local newspaper, Mr. Tennie Harris, commonly known
a s “One Shot Harris”. When asked why he was called One Shoot, he explained,
“I am not like the big newspaper photographers, I can only afford to waste one flash bulb on a shot”. His work is in the Smithsonian Library.
After High School I went to work for the newspaper that Mr. Harris worked and was assigned to the advertising department and photographed Department Store window displays that were used in the paper advertising section.
That lasted for a few years, then came the Korean War, rather than wait to be drafted in the
VIRGINIA PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHERS’ ASSOCIATION VOL. 18, #6
Army, I enlisted in the Air Force and had hoped to become an Aerial Photographer, but instead became an Aerial Gunner on a B-26 Light Bomber and served 20 months in Korea flying 55 Combat missions over North Korea, before returning to the states.
I stayed in the U.S. Air Force for 23 Years before retiring. During all that time I never lost my love for Photography. I have had many cameras over the years, film and digital to keep my passion alive. I still own a RollieFlex, Rollicord and a Speed Graphic Press Camera!
After retirement from the Air Force, I started a Building Maintenance business and it has lasted 41 successful years.
About six years ago, I decided to step away from my company and do what I always wanted to do, Photography.
That’s when I really got serious about honing my skills. That’s when I sought out the professional of today. The John Warters, T. Penrose’s of the world to help me on my way. It was through John that I became involved with VPPA. That’s where I heard about Print Competition as a way to improve your skills. Needless to say, my first try was not so good, but that is what print competition is about, letting you know in a constructive way, what you need to do to become better.
The next time out of the box I merited at the VPPA Competition and went on to have that print Merit at the PPA’s International Competition. From that time on, I have entered the maximum number of prints at all levels of Print Competition. I have had many Blues, and Court of Honors at VPPA
print Competitions for the last 5 years and Merit General Collections at PPA during the same period. Meriting at SEPPA is still a challenge.
If Photography is your core business or just for fun like me, always strive for perfection. That has been my core goal all my life regardless of what I did. My Dad told me when I was very young, “whatever you do I life be the best you can”.
In my company as a Building Maintenance Company, we have a motto, “We don’t do Windows”. In my photography business my motto is “We don’t do Weddings”. I love to photograph street people, landscape, nature and general Photojournalism subjects.
To my fellow Professional Photographers, in a time when everyone has a camera, via phone, iPad or other fancy devices, your only salvation, I feel, is to be very creative and think out of the box when you produce your work.
Remember you are not only a Photographer; you are a one-of -a kind Artist.
THANK YOU Bill for sharing all that history- and a BIG THANK YOU for serving our country! I loved learning about how you came to love photography! -E.
