May Madness Details• May Madness will be held at the Sarah Heinz House on Saturday,

May 7, 2011• Starting time will be at 9:00 am with the intent to be completed by

noon• The intent is for this to be a high school competition but there is no

lower age limit• The number of teams will be limited to a maximum of 24

– Registration will begin on Thursday March 24 and will end on Friday, April 8 or until all slots are filled

– Organizations may register more than one team, but the second and subsequent teams will be place on a waitlist until it is determined whether there is room for them.

List of Materials

• 12 - 1” PVC pipe cut to 6” high• 5 – 4” PVC pipe – 1 cut to 4” high, 2 cut to 6”

high and 2 cut to 8” high• ¾” Black electrical tape• 40 white ping pong balls – ten per team• 12 black ping pong balls – mounted on the 1”

pipes in the corners• Ramp from the VEX “Elevation” Game.

Beginning Configuration• Each team will start with their robot up against the

center ramp – the orientation of the robot is at the teams’ discretion

• Each team will start with 10 white ping pong balls in hand

• Black ping pong balls will be will be on the 12-1” PVC pipes

• You may have up to two ping pong balls on your robot at a time.

• All ping pong balls will have a colored dot (different for each alliance) so that the referee will be able to score each team accurately

Other Setup

• Balls that go into an opponent alliance’s side goal will count for the opposing alliance

• Balls that end up outside the competition area will not be returned to the referee.

• Robots may pick up balls on the floor of the competition field, but may not load these balls by hand.

Scoring – Side Baskets• 1 point for a white ball scored into the 6” basket• 2 points for a white ball scored into the 8” basket• 2pts (6”) or 4pts (8”) for a ball shot from behind

the “foul line” (the line that delineates the interior 8’ rectangle)– To be considered as having been shot from behind

the foul line, all parts of the robot as well as the ball must be behind the foul line)

• Black Balls are worth 2x points when scoredNormal - 2 pts (6”) / 4pts (8”)Behind Foul Line - 4pts (6”) / 8pts (8”)

Scoring – Center Basket

• All shots for the center basket must occur from beyond the slope of the center support– Example: Robots wheels cannot be on the slope part of

the ramp when shooting towards the center basket

• Shots take when the robot’s wheel are in contact with the slope of the ramp will not be counted

• 5 points for a white ball scored in the center basket• 10 points for a black ball scored in the center basket

Black Balls

• To be scored, black balls must be removed from their PVC stands by the robot

• No score will be given for black balls removed or loaded by hand

• Opposing team robots are not allowed to enter the opponents “corner zone” – Knocking over the opponents PVC stands (accidental or on purpose) will be penalized 10 points.

White Balls

• White balls may be loaded on the robot by hand ONLY when the robot is inside of the “Human Loading Zones”

• Robots may only have up to two white balls on their robot at any time.

• Opponent Teams may not contact a robot that is currently loading – Slight contact will be penalized 10 points, purposeful contact will be disqualified.

Primary Rules• Teams may not de-score an opponent’s goal. A team will be disqualified

for de-scoring an opponent’s goal.• Teams may not “goaltend” an opponent’s scoring basket. Goaltending is

the act of preventing a ball that has been released by an opponent’s robot from scoring while in the air.

• Teams may not break the plane of the opposing teams “paint” around their scoring baskets. Incidental breaking of the plane will not be penalized, but extended time inside of the “paint” will cause the offending team to be disqualified.

• A robot cannot pin (inhibit the movement of an opposing) an opposing robot for more than five seconds on the playing surface. The referee will warn the offending team and if the pinning is not immediately released, the offending robot will be disqualified for the match.

Logistics

• 3 members of each team will be in the competition area (6 per alliance)

• 2 members from each team will be in charge of driving the robot and one will be the “Human Loader”.

• Non-Students (Coaches, Mentors) may not be the Human Loader or Drivers.
