President’s Message…

Well, as predicted by your editor, the weather was not that great for our first photo tour of the year but the 10 members who met at Clearview Townships' Station 3 in New Lowell on May 14 were a hardy bunch and had a most enjoyable day even though it was mostly cold and wet. Eventually, the sun did come out as we were wrapping up things in Wasaga Beach late in the afternoon. Many thanks to organizer Larry Ward and to those who came out despite the conditions. Many thanks also go out to our hosts from the Clearview, Collingwood and Wasaga Beach departments, who were most accommodating. An updated roster of the three departments and photos can be found further on in this issue. Plans are also well underway for the rest of this year’s tours beginning in southern Bruce County on June 25 followed by a two day tour in Monroe County, NY on July 9 & 10, eastern Northumberland County on August 13, Central Elgin & St. Thomas on September 10 and East Gwillimbury, Uxbridge & Scugog on October 3. Schedules and further information can be found on the clubs' website closer to the event. I would also remind you that the IFBA Convention will be held in New Orleans this year from August 16-20. Further information and registration forms can be found on their website; ifba.org The ownership of High Pressure Monitor #2 was signed back to the City of Toronto on April 22 at a meeting between Division Chief Anselmi and myself, witnessed by Secretary Larry Ward, while a date for an official handover has not yet been finalized.

Bob Rupert, President.

From our Membership Secretary…

Just a brief note in this issue from your Membership Secretary, but very important none the less. It appears that we have had a problem collecting dues again this year, as there are still approximately 12% of our members who have failed to pay as of the first week in June. This is a distressing occurrence as we are half way into another year. Hopefully this situation will right itself and it appears to being doing that after a reminder was recently sent out. Looks like most just plain forgot. On the brighter side, we have welcomed three new members in the past several months. Remember that we are always on the lookout for new members. I look forward to another successful year for our organization and wish everyone a safe and enjoyable summer. Robert Herscovitch, Membership Secretary

From the Editor…

This issue we have the report from the first tour of the season, thanks to Bob Rupert, a ton of new deliveries and huge international section due to UK member Simon Adamson and our Singapore correspondent, Kenneth Lai. In addition, your editor took it upon himself to research the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, two areas we have not covered before, to increase our coverage. Kudos to Robert Herscovitch, Dave Stewardson, Doug Holmes, Bob Rupert, Ken Buchanan and Rob Simpson for info, and for photos: Dependable Emergency Vehicles, Dave Stewardson, Simon Adamson, Kenneth Lai, Doug Holmes, Bob Rupert, Ken Buchanan, Rob Simpson, Larry Thorne, John Bowerman, Ken Walton, Gary Dinkel, Harold McMann, Ian Duke, Terry Yip, Shane MacKichan and Neil McCarten. The Apparatus Floor… . Qualicum Beach, BC recently opened a large new station with four apparatus bays. Port Stanley $2 million for new hall at Sunset Dr. & East Dr. Richmond, BCs new Station 1 is nearing completion. It is two stories with four bays; most of them drive-through. Central Elgin is budgeting $2 million for new fire hall in Port Stanley near Sunset Dr. & East St. Saanich Engine 2 went in service early in June so old Engine 2 is now in running from Hall 3 with Ladder 3. St. John’s Regional Fire Service is opening a new station in the community of Paradise, NL in a few weeks. It will house a full time crew with a pumper and support vehicle. With the new DEV rig in service as Brant County Unit 11, the 1991 E-One tanker it replaced has been sold. Grimsby Squad 518 replaced the former Squad 1 (2010 Ford F-150) which is now car 503. Minto (Harriston & area) has their ex-Brampton 1989 E-One quint up for sale with the purchase of the ALF quint. In April, Smeal introduced newly configured models for the Squrt and Snorkel brands, which it owns. A 55’ Snorkel mounted on a Sirius II chassis was delivered to the Frankfurt, IL FPD and a 54’ Squrt and a 65’ Telesqurt went to the Prospect Heights VFC, in Ewing Twp.NJ, also on Sirius chassis, along with a matching Smeal 100’ aerial. Niagara Region departments dispatched by St. Catharines have developed a new numbering system for apparatus, The first digit (or 2 digits) is the department by population. The Second number represents the station and the third number is the apparatus type. Number 1 to 4 are Pumpers, 5 are Ladders, 6 are Tankers, 7 are Rescues and 8 are Squads. Stations are identified by 2 numbers i.e. Lincoln Station 4 is Stn 6-4 The Department numbers are as follows: 1. St. Catharines 7. Port Colborne 2. Niagara Falls 8. Thorold 3. Welland 9. Pelham 4. Fort Erie 10. Niagara-on-the-Lake 5. Grimsby 11. West Lincoln 6. Lincoln 12. Wainfleet So the tanker out of West Lincoln Station 2 is 11-2-6 the rescue out of Grimsby Stn 1 is 5-1-7 Currently Lincoln, Grimsby and West Lincoln are the trial stations, the new system will eventually be rolled out to the other departments. This system was developed by these 3 departments because a mutual aid call in the old system could result in 3 ladder 1s on the scene. Although Niagara Falls are not dispatched by St. Catharines they have adopted the new system.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING: THE SUPER BICKLES By Walt McCall

In 1928, Bickle fire Engines Ltd. of Woodstock, Ontario introduced its first proprietary, custom-built motor fire apparatus. Designed by Vernon Bickle King, the new Bickle Customs featured a distinctive gabled hood – like those on the Ahrens-Fox fire engines Bickle had assembled and sold in Canada for the previous five years -- but with horizontal, rather than vertical, hood louvers. The new Bickle Custom also sported a tall cast-aluminum radiator shell identical to the Ahrens-Fox. Over the years the pleasingly styled, sturdy-looking Bickle Customs were built in no fewer than 5 distinct series and sizes. At the bottom were the 350 GPM gpm Bickle Volunteer and slightly larger 450 GPM 600 Chieftain. Next came the 600 gpm Underwriter and 700 GPM Woodstock. But at the top of the heap was the 800/900 gpm Bickle Canadian and Special. Of the more than 60 gable-hood Bickle Customs the company delivered to Canadian fire departments between 1928 and 1939, just six were the big Canadians, which sometimes also listed as Bickle Specials. What set these big fire engines apart from their smaller cousins was what lay under that high, gabled hood: – a big 125-horsepower Ahrens-Fox Model “P” six-cylinder engine instead of the Waukesha motors used in the smaller models. Regardless of size, all were equipped with Bickle rotary gear pumps. The first three of these big Bickle Canadians were built in 1929 – a pumper for Vancouver, B.C. and an identical pumper for Walkerville, Ontario -- now part of Windsor. Bickle also delivered a big Canadian city service ladder truck with chemical equipment to Saskatoon, Sask. that same year. The Town of Sandwich, also a suburb of Windsor, got a twin to the Walkerville pumper in 1930. Canada’s capital city of Ottawa took delivery of two Bickle Canadian triple combination pumpers in 1931 – bringing to six the number of Ahrens-Fox powered Canadians built and delivered. In 1934, Brockville, Ontario took delivery of a big Bickle Quad, a combination 800 gpm pumper and service ladder truck which utilized the same body sheet metal as the earlier pumpers and the Saskatoon ladder truck, but powered by a Waukesha engine. Just one of these classic Bickle fire engines “with the heart of a `Fox” survives. It is the magnificent, recently restored 800 gpm pumper owned by well-known fire apparatus collector Brian Beard of Langley, B.C. that graces the cover of this issue. Vancouver’s `29 Bickle spent most of its career at Station 6, at Nicola and Nelson Sts. in the city’s west end. It was later reassigned to Station 14 as a fireboat tender, its hose bed filled with 3” boat hose. Retired in 1968, the 1929 Bickle was acquired by former OFBA member Rob McRae, a member of the BC Antique fire apparatus Association. When Rob moved to Vancouver Island and downsized his collection a few years ago, Brian bought the Bickle, which had been dismantled and lay in pieces in one of Rob’s storage buildings. Amazingly, the truck still had its original Ahrens-Fox motor, which was in excellent running condition. What followed over the next two years was a painstaking restoration which Brian completed earlier this year. In 1935 Windsor annexed the former towns of Walkerville and Sandwich and the 1929 and 1930 Bickle pumpers joined the enlarged Windsor Fire Department. Later repowered with Waukesha motors, both survived into the 1960s. Engine 6, the Sandwich `30, was retired in 1960 and its low-mile motor later transplanted into a 1952 Bickle-Seagrave aerial. Engine 2, the 1929 Walkerville Canadian, remained in service as a spare pumper until 1965 when it, too was retired and scrapped. The Saskatoon ladder truck was replaced by an American-LaFrance aerial in 1945 and the two Ottawa Bickles apparently also survived into the 1960s. As a footnote, the big Brockville quad is also still around in a private collection in Quebec. Brian’s big Bickle is a truly rare, uniquely Canadian fire apparatus classic.

Book-ending this group are the Ottawa pair of Bickle Canadian Customs. (Walt McCall Collection)
