Prayer of confession Almighty God, you have made us in your image and endowed us with the wonderful gift of memory. By looking to the past we see your grace at work in our lives. You have surprised us with blessings. You have sustained us in trials and affliction. Forgive us for failing to recall your mercies to us. based on Psalm 90, O God, Our Help in Ages Past celebrates god’s faithfulness

through the ages. at an early age, isaac Watts complained about the dreary

psalm-singing in the church. Watt’s father encouraged him to “write something better to sing.” so he did— eventually

composing more than 600 hymns including

When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.

in 1873, american attorney horatio

spafford wrote the words to It is Well with My Soul after

the death of his four daughters, all under the age of 11, when their ship sank while crossing the atlantic ocean with his wife, anna, who survived

the tragedy. anna sent spafford a telegram

from London: “saved alone.”

Pastoral Prayer and the Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors, And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

offering our gifts Psalm 23 ...................................................................................................................Paul basler chancel choir anna dodd, horn

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: For thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table for me in the presence of my enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; My cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of the Lord. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. The Lord is my shepherd, forever. Amen.

*hymn of thanksgiving Holy, Holy, Holy (all singing).......................................................................................nicaea Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!

Early in the morning, our song shall rise to Thee. Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty. God in three Persons, blessed Trinity: Amen!

thirteen years ago, Paul basler, american composer and french

horn player, wrote a suite of 5 songs

called Songs of Faith, celebrating the ways americans express their faith. Psalm 23, the best known and

most beloved of all the Psalms, is the finale of

that suite.

scripture: Psalm 90: 1-12....................................................Pew bible, page 929-930a Psalm of moses 1 Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. 2 before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are god. 3 you turn people back to dust, saying, “return to dust, you mortals.” 4 a thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night. 5 yet you sweep people away in the sleep of death—they are like the new grass of the morning: 6 in the morning it springs up new, but by evening it is dry and withered. 7 We are consumed by your anger and terrified by your indignation. 8 you have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. 9 all our days pass away under your wrath; we finish our years with a moan. 10 our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures; yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away. 11 if only we knew the power of your anger! your wrath is as great as the fear that is your due. 12 teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

the beautiful flowers in the sanctuary this morning are given to the glory of god and in Loving memory of

Drew Pogue. they are the gift of his parents, tom and susan Pogue

and his sister, rebecca.

this hymn text dates to 1885, composed in swedish by carl

gustav boberg. the english translation was done by stuart

hine in 1953, omitting much of the original

nine stanzas. the hymn reminds us that when god’s glories

are truly seen, it is the soul that sings. right worship originates

deep within us and is not merely a matter of

voice and words.

hoW to read the PsaLms by tremper Longman tremper Longman gives us the kind of help we need to overcome the distance between the psalmists’ world and ours. he explains the various kinds of psalms, the way they were used in hebrew worship and their relationship to the rest of the old testament. then he looks at how christians can appropriate their message and insights today. turning to the art of old testament poetry, he explains the use of parallelism and imagery. step-by-step suggestions for interpretating the psalms on our own are followed by exercises for further study and reflection. also included is a helpful guide to commentaries on the Psalms. here is a book for all those who long to better understand these mirrors of the soul. Available in the Peachtree Bookstore and the Williams Center.

Births

Henley & Todd McKnight Boy: Emory Fletcher, 3/11

Angela & Joseph Winters Boy: Joseph Grant, 5/1

I met a young lady in the park who found herself homeless after enduring an unsafe living arrangement with her Mom’s new boyfriend. The young lady had only been on the streets a short time but had not anticipated what living on the streets might entail. Unfortunately, she found herself homeless for much longer than the “couple of days” she envisioned. She only had a backpack with a few shirts, zero toiletries, and toothbrush. When I asked what she needed most, with a smile and small chuckle, she said, “a shower and deodorant”. When I pulled the toiletry bag out of my backpack - she wept. It was as if the kit represented much more than just the items she needed. Through tears and a cracked voice she said, “I really needed this”. We were able to place her at the Covenant House.”
