Memorial Day Observance in Plainwell. The parade has been canceled again due to road construction. Plainwell-area veterans will ob-serve Memorial Day, Monday, May 27th, 2013, with a ceremony at the Greater Plain-well Veterans’ Memorial in Sherwood Park. The ceremony will commence at Noon when the American Legion Post 84 Color Guard salutes all lost at sea from the railroad trestle bridge adjacent to the Memorial, then marches to the Memorial for the rest of the ceremony. The memory of all Plainwell-area veterans who lost their lives in the nation’s conflicts dating back to the Civil War will be honored with the dedication of their names engraved on the face of the granite Memo-rial. Army Pvt. Jeremie W. Strobridge has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tac-tics, military courtesy, military justice sys-tem, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises. Strobridge is the son of Jackie Strobridge, Allegan. He is a 1997 graduate of Plainwell High School.

Thursday, May 30, 2013 • 7:00 p.m.- Plainwell’s Downtown Plaza -(the intersection of Main Street & West Bridge Streets)

The Soule Memorial Fountain was builtin 1907, donated by Mrs. Carrie Soule inmemory of her late husband, GeorgeGary Soule.

The fountain was destroyed in 1953when a truck driver from the GrandRapids Hide Company was on his way tothe Murray Packing Co. (currently JBSPackerland in Gun Plain Township). Thegentleman suffered a seizure at the mainintersection of Plainwell, rear-ended aparked police cruiser pushing it into thefountain, destroying the fountain.It was not until 1970 when the Jayceesspearheaded a fund raising program toreplace the fountain which is here today.This fountain was built much closer toHicks Park creating less of a traffic haz-ard. Because materials from the originalfountain were hard to duplicate, a muchsimpler version was built. One uniquefeature of the new fountain is the factthat one of the original stones was locat-ed and reused, thus linking the past withthe present.

bridge Township to Theodore DuWayne‘Ted’ and Lucy (Bolenbaugh) Hicks andwas a lifelong resident of the area. Heserved his country in the U.S. Navy duringWWII in the South Pacific on the de-stroyer, USS Cotton. DuWayne receivedhis Bachelor of Science degree fromM.S.U. in 1949. For 25 years he was em-ployed with Eckrich, retiring in 1992, andalso farmed most of his life. He was a veryactive member, lay speaker and SundaySchool teacher at Trowbridge MethodistChurch. For several years he served as aTrowbridge Township officer. In his leisuretime he enjoyed hunting and had madeseveral trips to Alaska. On September 1,1948 in Otsego he married the formerJean E. Graham, who survives. Also sur-viving are two sons and a daughter, Bob(Debbie) Hicks of Eagle River, Alaska,Maurice (Debbie) Hicks of Trowbridge andDoris Hicks of Eureka, CA; six grandchil-dren; 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded indeath by a son, Brian in 1981; a grandsonTom Hicks; and an adopted sister, SueWhelis. Funeral services will be held11:00 A.M. Friday, at TrowbridgeMethodist Church with Pastor SheilaBaker and Pastor David Youngs officiat-ing. Wilma Jeanette (Napp)McNees went home tobe with her Savior andLord, on May 13th, 2013,She passed away at herhome after a lengthy bat-tle with Alzheimer's. She

was born to William J. and Anna(Yonkman) Napp on April 12th, 1938 inKalamazoo , the 5th of six children. Wilmaloved life, and she loved her family andfriends. She was a generous, kind, andloving person who touched the lives ofeveryone around her. She loved to jokeand would do anything to get you tolaugh. She loved deeply and woulddemonstrate that love in ways too numer-ous to list. She married Donald McNeeson June 19th, 1959. They were marriedfor 53 years. Donald was her primarycaregiver for the last six years of her life.She was preceded in death by her par-ents, William and Anna Napp, her broth-ers, John Napp and Garrett Napp, andher nephews Terry VanDenBerg andDaniel Schiedel. She is survived by herspouse, Don McNees, two children,Michelle (Jeff) Hanson of Portage, MI andKevin (Karen) McNees of Alto, MI, alongwith her grandchildren, Carissa Hanson,Laura Hanson, Chelsea McNees, HayleyMcNees and Keaton McNees. Survivingsiblings include Anna VanDenBerg, Jen-nie (Robert) Schiedel, William Jr. (Janet)Napp, as well as sisters-in-law GerrieNapp and Hazel (Carl) Bussema. She isalso survived by many nieces andnephews. Wilma worked as a homemakerfor the majority of her adult life. Sheworked at Gibson Guitar and WMU, andretired from WMU Support Services in theearly 90's. She enjoyed spending timewith her family and friends, traveling anddining out, especially at Judy's Restau-rant in Otsego, MI. Even towards the endof her life she wanted to go to Judy's fora meal. She was a woman of faith andloved sending cards and notes of encour-agement. She was a member of Bloom-ingdale Christian Church for the last 30years of her life. Funeral services tookplace on Saturday, May 18th, 2013 atBloomingdale Christian Church. PastorBill Vande Giessen officiated. A privatecommittal took place at Mt. Ever-RestMemorial Park South. In lieu of flowers,memorial contributions may be made toAllegan Wings of Hope Hospice or to acharity of your choice.
