Message from the President

Hi PSCC Members,

It is that time again when fairs and art shows abound. They seem to be growing just like the Spring, and like this year, a bit earlier for the deadlines. Local to the Edmonds area I would recommend entering in the Edmonds, Shoreline, and Kenmore Art shows. Mountlake Terrace has their show in the fall. The entry dates for the Washington State Fair comes up this summer. See elsewhere in this newsletter for deadline dates and web links.

I am excited to report that there might be an opportunity for our club to sponsor a gallery wall in the Edmonds Swedish Hospital. Thanks to Andy Watson, who is pursuing this effort.

The field trip to Christianson’s Nursery was really fun, and those of you that need a weekend outing should mark your calendars for May 14, with a field trip to Whidbey Island Loop, hosted by Pedro Landers. The next education night is on May 30, on Night Photography with Brian Leary. Check the website for details; already we have 18 RSVP’d on MeetUp.

A proposal from club members has been made to change the name of the club, and the Board has decided to open this to a vote. The proposed name change is to Puget Sound Photography Club. The reasoning seems to be that the emphasis is on the art of photography more than the use of cameras. Although we support both, the current name, Puget Sound Camera Club, does create some confusion as to whether we are camera collec-tors. Actually, that might be more accurate for some members! There is minimal cost in changing the name, and the website name has been secured already if we decide to use it. You can talk to any board member, or email me back with your thoughts and comments on this issue. We will take a vote at the Year End Meeting on June 27. You have to be in attendance at this meeting to vote, we are not accepting votes by email.

Speaking of voting, the two year positions of President, Print Director, and Board Member at Large are up for a vote as well. I am willing to continue in the role of President, unless someone wants to volunteer or the membership feels otherwise. Henry Heerschap currently has the position of member at large, and Al Koskie is Print Director. Our by-laws require a re-nomination of those willing to continue and a vote of the membership to affirm. Any member can also be nominated.

I hope you are enjoying the early Spring and warm weather! Feel free to call or email me with any questions about the club.

There are many times when my images get what seems to me to be unfair criticism, but at least I never had to answer to this guy: http://petapixel.com/2016/03/28/many-great-depression-photos-killed-editors-hole-punch/If he didn't like an image, he made it a point to punch a hole through key parts of the negative, like peoples' faces. We're talking about images made by people like Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange and Arthur Rothstein. I'm not sure even Photoshop could do anything with these.

“It’s the bane of my existence that I see photography not as a way of recording personal experience particularly, but as this process of exploring the world and the me-dium. I have to be reminded, “It’s your son’s birthday party. Bring a camera.” And then, when I’m there, “Take a picture,” because it doesn’t occur to me to use it as this memo-rializing thing.” – Stephen Shore

“There are a lot of decisions to make, creatively. Now, with digital, you can really be the author of your own work. From the begin-ning to the end of the process, you control everything.” – Gregory Heisler

“Whenever I become absorbed in the beauty of a face, in the excellence of a single feature, I feel I’ve lost what’s really there…been seduced by someone else’s standard of beauty or by the sitter’s own idea of the best in him. That’s not usually the best. So each sitting becomes a contest.” – Richard Avedon

“There really isn’t anything that you could call ‘bad’ color. It all has to do with the amount of color you use and in what context it appears.” – Jay Maisel
