Chairman’s letter

Dear Members,

By all accounts received back from the European Individual Championshipsat Terni, this was a most enjoyable trip organised exceedingly well andTeam Managed by Gillian Aghajan.

Well done to everyone who took part and carried the Union Flag well asambassadors for BVF, and many congratulations to each of the medallists. Ahighly respectable performance overall with 13 medals for GB and aEuropean Championship for BVF member Georgina Usher.

In my last letter, I mentioned that we had heard that our Life President,Henry de Silva had suffered a stroke, so it was good to hear that he was inTerni supporting the BVF fencers and obviously feeling somewhat recovered.

Hot off the press is that BVF put in a well presented bid at Terni to host andorganise the 2016 European Team Championships and this was accepted. We will keep everyone informed with more details soon and it is certain thatwe will be looking for volunteers from BVF members to assist in theorganisation and running of the event.

Just a reminder that the Vets Winton Cup will be held in Telford over theweekend 7th and 8th September and I am aware that some teams arelooking for a few fencers for this enjoyable weekend. If you haven't yetbeen contacted but would like to go, please contact me and I will in turncontact the Team Captains.

Sincerely

Frank MillsChairman BVF

What an amazing experience for me to be Team Manager for such aterrific group of individuals, who not only fenced well, but wereincredibly supportive of each other. I was proud of everyone, not justof the medal winners but of every individual who took part, especially thosewho were disappointed with their results yet gracious in defeat. Althoughthis was an individual championships, the sense of team spirit was tangible.Thank you to all fencers who were there and to the supporters too. Nocompetition is without its problems and this one was no exception but Ithink we managed to deal with them with our British resilience and goodhumour. All in all the Italian Job was good!Gillian AghajanGBR Team Manager

Home Nations International - Dublin4th and 5th May 2013

The 2013 Home Nations International (4 Nations) was hosted by Ireland inthe Sports Hall of University College, Dublin. All of the Teams stayed at theStillorgan Park Hotel Dublin.

On the first day the Foil and Sabre Teams took up the cudgels. EnglandWomen’s Foil Team of Caron Hale, Kate O’Connell and Susan Uff won all oftheir matches getting the England Squad off to a good start. The EnglandMen’s Foil Team of Anthony Conyard, Tony Williams and Brian Caustonadded to the success of the Women’s team winning all of their matches.

The Men’s Sabre Team of Chris Prevett, Keith Rogerson and Evert vanGemeren maintained the pressure by winning 2 of their three matcheslosing to Ireland. The women’s Sabre Team of Tracy Russen, Caryl Oliverand Yvonne Walls lost to Scotland but beat Ireland and Wales.

Towards the end of the first day with 8 matches won and 2 lost Englandlooked set fair for an overall win by the end of the second day. However in athrilling Men’s Foil match at the end of day 1 Scotland beat Ireland by 1 hitafter being equal at time. This win meant that Scotland were back in therunning requiring 4 victories from the 6 available on day 2 of theChampionships.

On the evening of the first day members of all teams took part in a veryenjoyable Gala Dinner at the Hotel. As usual there was much banter andfriendly rivalry between the teams. The raffle was a great success raisingover £200 for charity.

England started the second day with the knowledge that they had to win atleast 3 of their 6 matches, preferably taking at least one victory fromScotland. In the first round the England Men’s Epée Team of Ralph Johnson,John Leahey and Niall Campbell, after a shaky start, ran out victorious overScotland. England’s Women’s Epée Team of Janet Baron, Caron Hale andValerie Young lost to Scotland.

In the second round both England’s Epée Teams faced Ireland where theWomen’s Team lost but the Men’s Team won. In the final round, witheverything to play for both of England’s Epée teams were victorious overWales and retained the Justin Smith Trophy for the 7th year in a row.

There was a good team spirit among the EnglandSquad, with each of the teams not fencingsupporting those on the piste. Everyone enjoyedthe experience and camaraderie, none more sothan the new members of the England Team.Well done England, again!

And from Wales….

The valiant Welsh team, depleted because several were at the BYCS or ontheir way to Terni, fought with their usual determination and goodsportsmanship at the Home Nations International in Dublin, but were upagainst strong opposition. A special well done to the women, four of whomfenced in all 3 weapons. A well deserved silver in the women’s foil andbronze for the men’s epée and men’s sabre teams.

Thanks to our Irish hosts for a well organised and very enjoyable event. Agood time was had by all.

Did you guess?

These two young boys, who arenow both Vets, are Rodney Greenhalgh andPeter Baron

‘Rodney and I met on holiday in Newquay when we were about 7, whereit happened that his parents owned the hotel at which we were stayingon holiday and he lived about a mile away from my home. We got on andmet again when he returned home. He later went away to prep andpublic schools but we would meet up during the holidays. This wasusually at his house (where the photo was taken) as there was little roomfor play at our shop which was in a row of terraced houses. We lost touchwhen time came to go the college/uni, meeting again once more a fewyears later and then when he took up fencing and began to take part invets events. So we didn't see each other for the best part of 40 yearsuntil 2006.’

and this one….With thanks toRobin Davenport andHoward West

‘Having spoken to Howard West aboutthe photo he thought it was 1973, Ithought 1974 or 1975. It is thevictorious Surrey Excalibur team at theschool venue on top of one of the hillsabove Bath. The fencers are from top and left to right: Howard West, Wim vanBeukuelen, Carol Oliver, Joe Shackell, Roger Pye, a sabreur whose namefails us, probably David Exeter, Wendy Ager, Lawrence Burr, Diane Austin,Jim Hamments, and probably Pete Casey.’
