.Hi again from the Team at Homebuilders, it is a privilege to have space in this local paper each month to keep in touch with the community.

Last month I said I would go over some of the work that Homebuilders does in the community.

We are open from 9am to 3pm Monday to Friday and love to have visitors pop in for a chat, a cup of coffee or for information we can help them with. We are often able to provide the help people need or to help by directing people to other agencies and organisa-tions who can provide what is needed.

Fresh produce is dropped in for us to hand on to oth-ers, this is a real blessing for those who are struggling financially and those with families who find rent and mortgages eat up a lot of their income. If you could use a bit of hand please just let us know, you can ring if that is more comfortable for you……4319080

We are always grateful for the lovely gifts of food etc that get dropped off at the Community House. It can be a great start to the day to find things at the front door when we arrive, and how often just the right people arrive on the same day who have a need that is filled.

Today the second Wednesday in the month Elizabeth and our Volunteer Lance are at the Anglican Church Footsteps Room providing morning tea and a couple of hours of Bingo for the Seniors. This is open to anyone over the age of well, let me see around about 55 – 60, a lot of fun is had by all, no money changes hands, hence no gambling is involved, but chocolates are provided for prizes for those who win a line or a house. A lot of fun is had by all and there is room for more!

Our Free Craft classes have started on Thursday mornings at 9.30am, do come in and have some fun and a find your crafty talents.

We will continue to let you know more about what we get up to next month.

WHAT WE WANT TO KNOW When, as a child, we burned our fingers by innocently reaching up to touch the hot stove, we created a small problem for ourselves and our parents. We now wanted to know a whole new range of things. Pain is not necessarily a great teacher because we want to get underneath and around and over, and know what happened; why our par-ents reacted the way they did and why the little blister ap-peared on our finger. As a boy you did not dare give me an old clock (wind-up style) or mechanical object, because I would dismantle it with boyish glee. Somehow I imagined that I would be able to put it all back together again. Of course, this never happened. There is a drive in us that wants to know what makes things work. We don't want to pass through life just taking everything for granted. We want to be the acknowl-edged expert. Nothing gives us more pleasure than to hold forth elo-quently at a social gathering on some subject that we really have no right to discuss. But somehow if we feel that if we have a little more knowledge than others, this is our moment to shine: “Somebody stop me please!” Such events are much worse when too much verbal lubrication is imbibed! I am sure you, like I, have overheard many such conversa-tions and cringed as incorrect facts were being quoted. People take great pleasure in airing their wonderful knowledge. What is that drive to stick our foot in our mouth? Why do we do it? The fact that you cringe proves that you do it too! I think all of us want to know why people do what they do. We want to have an opinion, and we don't want to merely shrug our shoulders and say, “it's a mystery. ”We don't want to look as dumb as we feel sometimes! We have an-swers for the complex issues related to our employment but can’t tell you why our kids won’t behave. Sometimes we understand the profound implications of statements made by Heads of State, yet at the same time we can't give an answer as to why some people really get at us and upset us just by being nearby. What we really want to know is this: What is it that causes us to repeat episodes and events in our life again and again? We are never deeply satisfied with saying, “Am I supposed to be learning something from all this?” Far bet-ter to undergo the lesson but still understand the purpose!Yes, we want to know what it is about ourselves that is so predictably troublesome, so consistently inconsistent, so stubborn, bitter, manipulative, proud, boastful, arrogant, etc., etc. To attempt to deal with our own shortcomings, we some-

times gain a new perspective on our problems by applying various teachings or beliefs. We imagine we have pro-gressed to a new permanent level or plateau from which everything will be different or better. But old traits re-emerge. Someone described this state as “walking around the Pyramid”; that is, we turn a corner to see a different view but we are still at the same height or level. Because the view has changed does not mean we have changed. All of us at times display irrational behavior and extreme anger under pressure of circumstances. While in some cases the anger may be justified, what we fail to under-stand is the trigger, or indeed the sequence of events, that leads us to the situation where our emotions are out of control. We need to know what kinds of situations are bad for us!Conversely, we need to know what kind of environment or situation produces the best out of us so that we can please others and be a positive help. The answers lie in understanding ourselves first before trying to adjust others; admitting we need to take our eyes off the problems long enough to see that we are at the cen-tre of things. A famous cartoon line goes: “we have found the enemy sir, and they is us!” We will be exploring questions like this at the forthcoming “Uniquely You” seminar on the 19th of March at the Con-gregational Church. Pukearenga Te Kohanga Reo

E ngā mana, e ngā kārangaranga maha tēnā rā kou-tou katoa. Pukearenga Te Kohanga Reo is a Māori immersion early childhood centre based in Paparoa. The Kaimahi at the Kōhanga Reo are Reno Skipper, Missy Tilby and Tina Ball. There are currently over 20 children enrolled at the kōhanga. We at Pukearenga Te Kōhanga Reo, have experienced a busy holiday season but have thank-fully had some great support from stalwart whānau to prepare the kohanga for the New Year. At the Pahi Regatta, the kōhanga reo ran a food stall out of the hall. The Pahi Regatta was success-ful not only because we raised funds but also be-cause we made the community more aware of our role and importance. From the Regatta we recruited several new whānau, making the long days and sore feet more than worthwhile. A pōhiri was held on February 1st and the kohanga was full. We acknowledge the people who came to help to manaaki and pōhiri our visitors. The 1st week was based on whānaungatanga and settling the tamariki into a routine. In the 2nd week we have been working on the kaupapa maunga and preparing for our haerenga to Pukearenga on Thursday. During our trip to Pukearenga we met at the Walker farm and made the tamariki more aware of the origin of the name, Pukearenga. Waiata and games were played at the base of the maunga. We would like to acknowledge our kaumātua and also the Walker family for enabling us to use their farm as a base for our trip. Another milestone that we celebrated was the start of the reo classes for adults. The first class held at Otamatea High School on Sunday 13th February was successful with 17 students both young and old keen to learn conversational Te Reo Māori. Again at Pukearenga Te Kohanga Reo on Monday 14th February there was a good turnout with 15 students,

of varying abilities eager to take the first steps to learning Te Reo Māori. We would like send an acknowledgement to both the Otamatea High School and Pukearenga Kohanga Reo for letting the adult classes take part on their premises. The topics that we will cover over this term include; Kaipara awa, marae and waka which relate to the kaupapa, ko wai au? We will also look at Rongomātāne and roles on the marae. This week has brought with it some challenges as we are rising to the challenge to kōrero Māori anake within the kohanga reo. Parents found it difficult at first but are also willing participants; kia kaha! We have been very fortunate to have lots of parent help, which is vital for a whānau based kohanga. Nō reira, e te iwi whāia tonutia te iti kahurangi.

The Cost of Mother Nature’s Fury

At 12.51 pm on 22 February 2011 New Zealand Time, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck the iconic South Island city of Christchurch. It was lunchtime, people were out on the street going about their daily business, buses and cars heading down along the streets, and office workers were within build-ings. In split seconds the world came apart, buildings fell down onto the street - there were people within them. The rubble fell onto buses crushing them to nothing. The count of confirmed dead at the time of writing this editorial stands at 38 identified and there are more to come. The iconic Christchurch Cathedral spire has been de-stroyed falling into the interior and the Pyne Gould Build-ing has been completely destroyed. There were people inside at the time. 80% of the city has no water. Power is out and sewerage lines have been severely damaged. Queen Elizabeth sent this message to Prime Minister John Key THE QUEEN'S MESSAGE TO JOHN KEY; "I have been utterly shocked by the news of another earth-quake in Christchurch. Please convey my deep sympathy to the family and friends of those who have been killed; my thoughts are with all those who have been affected by this dreadful event. My thoughts are also with the emer-gency services and every...one who is assisting in the res-cue efforts." The article The Day the Earth Roared by The Press on the Stuff.co.nz website said it all With no warning the earth roared and shook us fero-

ciously. Like my colleagues in the features department of

Christchurch newspaper The Press, I dived under my desk.

I'm a music critic and as we shook and my mind's eye

flashed images of my four children I was pelted with CDs

including, ironically, an Underworld album.

.... We walk en masse down the middle of the glass-strewn

street, strangers united by fear accompanied by dust swirl-

ing, sirens wailing and military helicopters circling. I felt

like I was on a movie set and that Bruce Willis would

surely appear around the next corner.

...With each aftershock strangers clung to each other,

some prayed. Others, like me, blasphemed and swore at

the ground.

Callouts We attended 67 call outs in January, which was down from 79 in the previous January. 43 of these were medical calls, and 24 were accidents. Once again, Mangawhai now being a transport-ing station has impacted on our monthly figures.

Maungaturoto Youth We are very excited to bring St John Youth to our area. We are the 60th Division to open in our region, so it is a very exciting time for us all. Our opening night on the 10th February was a huge success with 44 young people attending. This term our Penguin Group is working towards their Safety Badge which involves kitchen, bathroom playground and pool safety and much more. Our Cadet groups are working towards their Water Safety Badge.

Want to get involved as a Youth Member or Leader? Our Youth program is for ages 6-18. We meet on Thursday's at 4.30 at the Maungaturoto Ambulance Station dur-ing term time. If you are over 18 and want to give something back to your local community we are always on the lookout for Youth Leaders who are passionate about helping our youth in a fun friendly environment. Calling for New Members

We desperately need more ambulance volunteers. Unfortunately we are down to a few wonderful officers to cover the roster, and to lighten the load for these we need to recruit more people. In the long term we need more volunteers to keep our ambulance on the road 24/7.

We held an evening on 22nd February for anyone interested in becoming a volunteer - if you missed this and are interested in finding out more, please do not hesitate to contact Stephen or one of our members. You might actually enjoy it, and find a new passion in life! You also may be surprised where it could lead. A number of our volunteers now hold paid positions around the area. Congratulations to Donna Vincent, who now has a casual job as a patient transfer officer. Being a volunteer has significant benefits. Think how rewarding it would be knowing what to do, and being able to help someone in a life threatening situation.

Most of you will now be aware of Mr Hamilton’s resignation in December. We will miss Tony’s incredible knowledge, expertise and passion for children’s learning during the fourteen years he was Principal at Maungaturoto Primary School. Further on is more information regarding changes.

BOT Report At the Year 6 prize giving late last year I said “2010

has been a year of change, the passing of the batten,

and the changing of the guard, out with the old in with

the new. Early in the year our PTA saw just about a

complete exit of the team, their skills and knowledge

sadly missed but not far away, without missing a beat

their shoes were filled and then some. The BOT elec-

tions saw another exit of experience with only two ex-

isting trustees seeking re-election, but with new peo-

ple come new ideas, skills and enthusiasm.” 2011

be aware that Mr Hamilton resigned as principal after

school ended and the board worked towards appoint-

ing a replacement. I’m pleased to announce that Mrs

Alison Robinson will be acting principal for Term 1

and possibly Term 2. This is the best possible out-

come for the school, staff and children. The board

would like to thank Mrs Robinson and the staff for

their continuing support and hard work during this

transition.

Where to from here? The board has contracted an

advisor to help with the appointment of our new prin-

cipal, the staff and board are thinking about the es-

sential attributes which the school community would

want as we build the ideal principal profile. The proc-

ess of advertising,

consideration and interviewing will be timetabled over

all of term 1 with the outcome being appointing our

permanent principal, the board will only make this de-

cision if they have found the best person to manage

and lead of school. You all will be kept informed with

process and please call any board member if you

Don’t worry there is now an option to hear it on your CD player I have set up the equipment to lift the analogue tracks and convert them to digital. There are filters that will clean up some of the clicks and hisses as long as the quality of the original disk is sound.

Our third annual Trail Ride on Sunday 20th February was a great success and the inaugural Horse Trek the day before was also enjoyed by all participants with lots of very positive comments from the riders. Our thanks go to the following people:

• Don and Jacque McKay for allowing the events to run

on their farm and use of their farm tractor.

• John Linton for many hours mulching, the use of his

farm tractor and bikes, organising the trail ride permit, fix-ing fence areas that needed to be pulled down and for very kindly modifying fencing for future events.

• Julian Allen for mulching the car park and kids’ track.

• Jason and Julian Allen for managing the animals in

the paddocks.

• Mark Flanagan who worked for long hours preparing

the trail ride using his own equipment and bikes.

ministering to the injured.

CELEBRATE MAUNGATUROTO’S CHILDRENS DAY

Maungaturoto Plunket committee is kick starting Plunket’s annual Appeal Week with a Children’s Day Celebration on Sunday 6th March 2011 at the Centennial Hall in Maunga-turoto from 10am to Midday. Childrens Day is a non commercial annual day, founded in year 2000, with the vision of celebrating and nurturing our greatest treasure, our children. Core values of the day are: giving time, praise and encouragement, listening and talking, love and affection, and new experiences. As this is a day for all children in Maungaturoto, and the surrounding dis-tricts,here will be a variety of activities rang-ing from face painting to bouncy castles, mainly music to colouring-in competitions, plus loads more fun and laughter for children of all ages. So join in the fun and help cele-brate National Children’s Day!!

Greetings to you all and what a great season we are having, lovely weather and warm. Great for growing vegetables as long as you have the water to give them.

The sustainable gardening course has started at Arty farties and will be just getting underway as this paper goes to print. We were very happy with the response we got but are still able to take on board any late com-ers that may wish to start the course now. If you are interested please ph Ann Shanks at 09 4316229 and discuss this with her.

The fortnightly markets are doing well and we are de-

lighted with our group of regulars but we still would like to see more people both the buying and selling public so that we keep the markets growing. So come on out to Paparoa and have a look see at our market it runs fortnightly same day as the local farmers market.

We have a request to put out to you all and this is for any old or unwanted sewing machines or over lockers.

The craft workshops we are currently running involve several children and they are working on several

projects that include a lot of sewing. We only have the loan of 2 sewing machines and these are both pushed to the maximum. Occasionally they break down and then we are struggling with one machine and several kids miss out and it becomes very frustrating for them to not get a turn on a machine.

So if you know of anyone that has a machine and does not use it anymore…maybe they will donate it to our cause. Ph Ann Shanks on 4316229 with any offer you may have to make re sewing machines.

I would now like to tell you some of the good news we have… you may remember me telling you about our idea of an Arty Farties Street full of playhouses for children.

Well we have just received funding for the first play-house. The funding group have chosen the design they wish to purchase from us and the name they wish us to give it and we are about to order the house to be built…isn’t this exciting …

We are hopeful of more applications going out and look forward to getting this project off the ground. This will be a wonderful place for our children to dis-cover some of the basic things in life and how they work in the grown up world.

I am not going to let slip the name of the first house just yet but I will tell you that it will be a bank build-ing…there I bet that makes you guess all sorts of names. Well that’s about it for now. so look out for the new little bank in Paparoa and keep an eye out on those vegetable gardens growing and please come along and join in our markets…its great fun and you get to meet all sorts of lovely people…We are going to start giving you a profile on some of them in up-coming editions.

MAUNGATUROTO GARDEN CLUB On Wednesday, 16 February members met for a picnic lunch at Jill Mills’ home. Best bloom, fruit and vegie competitions were held as usual and a number of prettily decorated sun hats were entered in the decora-tive competition. Members enjoyed being able to buy bulbs and bottled jams at the Trading Table. Jill’s flower and vegetable gardens were much admired. GARDEN NOTES FOR MARCH 2011

March is a harvesting month for some varieties of fruit as they mature, particularly the main apple varieties. Golden Queen peaches are especially susceptible to brown rot at the end of the season so spray till harvest. Citrus trees should receive an autumn fertilizer. This is the important month to plant winter vegetables such as onions, carrots and cabbages etc. Continue to disbud and feed late flowering chrysanthemums and dahlias. Keep roses thriving with a deep watering about once a week and dead-head. Bulbs can still be planted for spring flowering.

Maungaturoto is the scene of an historic milestone with a youthful twist.

The 60th Youth division of St John Northern opened in Maungaturoto in February – and as far as numbers go, this is one that really counts! Says Regional Youth Manager Christine Benson, “In 2000, when we had 32 Youth divisions, we agreed on a growth plan that would see us grow steadily and sustainably. One of the goals was to start new Youth divisions where demand required it, or where we did not have a presence and that would see us reach 60 divisions in 2010.” “We are proud to now celebrate the start of our 60th Youth divi-sion. All the very best to Maungaturoto Youth and our thanks to Jodie Hosford, the new Manager, all the leaders at Maunga-turoto, the Otamatea Area Committee and station staff including Nyree Alcock, Karlene Storey, Len Dunn, Angela Denton, Ingrid Bernie and Stephen Rosser for their wonderful support, and Peter Bell, Bernie Heslop, Ingrid McLennan and Tracy McMillan, for their work in getting the division started.” Forty three children between the ages of six and 18 attended the first meeting on what Christine says was a very successful night. “A group of very positive and motivated leaders had a range of activities for the young people to try out on the night and we know this division is going to do very well.” Jodie Hosford says the next step is to build on the leadership and she called for leaders to come forward. “It takes all kinds, and our existing leaders are real New Zealand people who fit St John in around busy lives without undue pres-sure Four of us are mums and we are on range of other local committee. The Kaiwaka Sports Associations “Top of the Rock” held last

Saturday was a great success!

We had 162 entries – an impressive number for our first year of running a multi-sport event. Some competitors participated in the 12km run & 9km mountain bike course, while the majority entered the 10 km run/walk course.

Brendon Johnson (TV3's “MoneyMan”) presided over the prizegiving. With thanks to our generous sponsors, there were over 80 prizes up for grabs – placegetters got first choice from the prize table, then the remaining prizes were given out by a draw. Our main prize of an Avanti bike was won by Madison Ottaway.

Congratulations to Tyler Murray who won a prize as the first child home in the 10km course. Tyler was also the 3rd overall runner home! An impressive result for a ten year old!

Mangawhai Tyres kindly donated $50 for the oldest competitor. This was won by Bruce Grant, 76 years. A prize also went to our youngest competitor Sara Anderson, 5 years old.

Kaiwaka Sports Association President Evan Wright was given a gift in recognition of all the work that he and his wife Michelle had put into organising the event.

Thank you's were also given to our many helpers: marshals, fire brigade volunteers, bar staff and the landowners who gave per-mission for the routes to go over their farms.

Bernice & Alan were married on the 31 march 1951 at Te Awamutu, Bernice’s home town. When visiting his Aunty Hilda Cullen, in Te Awamutu, Alan was introduced to Bernice and that’s where it all started. He had to travel many hours by train to get there for the occasional weekend “courting” her for about 2 years before she agreed to marry him and become his wife. They borrowed Bernice’s mother’s car and ventured to the South Island for their honeymoon . When they stayed at Christ-church at Bernice’s elder sister’s place, suddenly, Faye’s second daughter was about to be born and The car was borrowed again for the trip to the maternity hospital . Imagine the shock horror when it was also still full of confetti. Brother in law Max, had to answer a few sticky questions over that.... Alan was the 4th generation of the Flower family to live on “Flowerdale”, the home farm in Gorge Road, Maungaturoto. His Great grandfather, William Mousley Flower was one of the first few families from England who arrived and settled in Maungaturoto in 1863. In turn the succeeding Flower sons lived & farmed Flowerdale and they and their families were strong influences in the community in their time. William’s son, Harold, married Edith Cullen, (Alan’s Grandfa-ther), and in turn, Arthur Stanley Flower (Alan’s Father) farmed Flowerdale, and on Arthurs death in September 1951, Alan had to suddenly take full responsibility for the farm, along with his new wife. In preparation for the marriage a new house was planned. The Fowers had purchased standing timber (for 800 pounds) from the Pilbrows on “Pilbrows hill” which Arthur and Alan sawed down by hand using the cross cut saw and then had them milled at “Barrots” mill in Waipu. Proudly, Alan remembers the whole house cost 3500 (pounds) complete with concrete water tank and septic tank. As newly weds, Alan & Bernice lived with Alan’s parents until the house was finished later in 1951. As a new farmers wife, Bernice had lots to learn about farming and the Flower family and Maungaturoto. And, as well, she soon had a new house with a large piece of land round it , which of course, she soon developed her love of gardening from.... The family expanded with Sally being born in 1953, Penny 2 years later and Peter after that.. Alan and Bernice have been deeply involved with the Maunga-turoto community for many years including Dairy company Community Hall, Congregational Church and now the Presbyterian Church, Otamatea Vet club, The schools primary and the High school in turn as the childen grew up, JMB rugby, Gardening Club Business association (Florist shop)

The Library Patrons of Repertory Theatre Patron of Gardening Club, Kauri museum board and as volunteers (the gardens) plus many many more.

In celebration of 60 years married at the Maunga-turoto centennial Hall on Thursday 31st march, 2011. Plans are for a catered lunch, extending on into the afternoon. Bernice & Alan extend an invitation to all their many friends and family. Please give them a call by 20th March (4318611) if you would like to share this day with them.
