Getting Started Ask questions via the Chat Box. We love questions and will answer them all! Please use the chat box for questions related to the program and not technical support questions or comments. We cannot assist you with technical issues while we are teaching the program. If you need technical support, please contact [email protected]. She is standing by to assist and will do whatever she can to help you. If you lose audio during the program, please be patient as it normally comes back quite quickly. The most common reason for lost audio is temporary loss of an Internet connection or lack of Internet speed, nothing controlled on our end. As noted, it usually fixes itself. And remember – you always have access to the audio recording, so you can go back and listen to any segments you might have missed. Today’s Program

“Need-to-Knows” for Succeeding with Technical Clients Gathering Information Questions to Get Things Started

Tell me about the organization – what industry, how many employees, how many locations, and annual revenue? Is the company faced with any particular challenges – acquisitions, mergers, start-up ventures, turnarounds, or accelerated growth? Is it a new business, a high-growth company, or a large corporation? What is the primary product and/or service the company delivers to clients? Describe the specific hardware, software, applications, operating systems, network protocols, or other technologies the company develops and markets. Detail the specific products and/or processes for which you are responsible. Does that include design? Does that include operations? What have you enjoyed most about your work? What do you consider your greatest accomplishment? What are you known for? What types of problems do your coworkers come to you to solve?

Speaking to Business Value Questions to Get Things Started

What major projects have you worked on in the last year or two? Have you developed new processes that have improved design, engineering, or manufacturing capabilities? Have these new processes had an impact on customer satisfaction, product performance, and/or the productivity of the organization? Can you quantify the results? Do you interact with vendors or customers? Do you negotiate contracts? Have you sourced new products, raw materials, contractors, and/or suppliers? Did you save any money or improve quality? Samples

Writing Strategies for Technical Professionals Start Where It Matters Questions to Get Things Started

What are your top two–three target position titles? (Great for a form!) Are you looking to stay at your current level or take a step up? Is that a step up in technical expertise, leadership, or more into marketing, sales, or other operations? What do you think is most important for an employer to see about your background for this position? Samples

Translate Projects to Accomplishments Questions to Get Things Started

What are the major projects you have worked on, in detail? What was the financial investment of the company in these, if any? What specifically did you do? What were the results? Have you participated in any IT security or asset management projects? What was the objective and what was your role? Any achievements or notable results? What is the largest project you’ve ever been involved in? Did you have supervisory or leadership responsibility? What was the dollar value of the project (either internal investment or external sales)? Have you been involved in reducing annual operating costs? By doing what? Did it involve technology? What specific technologies? How much savings (actual dollars or percentages)? Samples

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS Large-Scale ERP Implementation & Integration

Situation Tyco Retail Solution (TRS) was relocating to Switzerland. As part of the process, they needed to redeploy and integrate a complete manufacturing operation, including all of the international drop-ship activities, into the existing Baan IV ERP environment but for a new multi-company operation. Another requirement was the development of a new process for use by OEM vendors based in the United States engaging with the new legal entity in Switzerland.

Action Led this initiative, called Project Pinnacle, over a 12-month period and multiple project phases, including:

Phase 1A: Project initiation, manufacturing operation migration, new OEM vendor process implementation, system stabilization, and advancement to project go-live date.

Phase 1B: Integration of the Zaragoza Recycling Center from the EMEA’s JDE system into the new Baan platform. Phase 1C: Planning and guidance of the Hong Kong Recycling Center integration into the Swiss Baan platform.

Result Earned the Tyco Vital Values Award for leadership accountability in the successful implementation and integration of these disparate systems into a single Baan environment. Delivered enhancements to the ERP system as well as the business applications and databases supporting various business activities, including:

Delivered enhancements to the ERP system as well as the business applications and databases supporting various business activities, including:

Transfer Pricing & EDI Communications Reporting, Taxes & Trade Compliance Capital Expenditure Request Management Payment Processing (ACH/Wire Transfers) & Cash Application

Selected to lead a team of 5 for the subsequent delivery of a phased ERP solution for Tyco Fire Detection.

Document Management System Implementation Project

Situation Tyco’s Life Safety Products group had an antiquated, paper-based file archiving system. The manual labor and physical storage costs involved were staggering, as every document needed to be scanned and was then filed and stored offsite.

Action Investigated alternatives and worked with multiple internal teams to select the appropriate solution (DocAccel) after evaluating many product demos. Identified and assembled a diverse resource team that included vendors, internal developers, and consultants from both NSI and IKON to implement the document management system using both SharePoint and the Baan platform for the sales group.

Result Eliminated manual scanning and filing, as well as all offsite storage costs. Reduced paper procurement costs 83% by advancing a Web-enabled form fill solution for only $49K.

Expanded the document management solution to include Deliveryware for electronic invoice storage and retrieval.

Excess & Obsolete Inventory Reporting Project

Situation Tyco’s Life Safety Products group had a very cumbersome financial accounting and reporting process for excess and obsolete inventories. In fact, it required so much manpower that the month-end close process was delayed just due to the completion of this accrual report.

Action Led development of a Baan-based accrual report that enabled product line managers to independently administer their own E&O financial forecast and accruals without the intervention of the Cost Accounting teams.

Managed the production launch and cut-over to SharePoint 2007 and the subsequent upgrade to SharePoint 2010.

Result Reduced the number of days required to complete the month-end close by 2+ days.

Sanjay Veridoon Headline Director of Development at VetHelp.com Summary Balancing structure and agility while developing technology solutions for business problems – this has been one of the key lessons in my career and a foundation for my success managing and building sophisticated service and products from start-up through maturity. The oscillation between business and technology started on the business side – when, at 17, I started and grew a ski tour business using basic marketing strategies large corporations use, although I was clueless at the time. This enterprising spirit was shaped and inspired by a few great role models along the way: * My undergrad computer science professor Dr. Johnson who handed me my worst grade on an exam that looked deceptively simple. Lesson: things are never as simple as they first appear. He inspired me to learn and helped me be comfortable with not knowing everything and making mistakes. * My manager and colleague John who taught me the difference between being a manager and a leader; I continue to draw from this experience and am inspired to be a better, confident leader who provides opportunities for my team to grow. * My customers who challenge me to provide unexpected solutions to meet their need, and reward me for having their best interest at heart. * My kids’ purity, their untainted view of life and unfiltered responses that provide me with daily learning opportunities and make me a better person. Having survived big companies where everything is siloed and being an entrepreneur where it’s up to me to make everything happen, I bring a unique perspective to technology leadership. I understand the urgency of business and the pushback from IT to “do it right” – the need for structure and the opportunity cost of not being agile. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Visionary, Business Strategist, Innovator, Communicator ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Core Competencies: Enterprise Architecture Application Development & Integration (web and mobile applications) Service & Product Development Digital Marketing and Branding Experience Director of Development, VetHelp.com – September 2011 to Present A gap in technology for dentists to manage staffing needs sparked development of solutions for 1,500 employers and 20,000 veterinarians, with 25–30 new users joining every day. I have created and led agile teams in a startup environment to meet this market gap. Technology Leadership: Directed website and mobile application development for staffing, marketing, and vendor relationship management. * The goal: address customer needs by automating and expediting temporary staffing processes.

My role evolved to direct teams designing solutions that added value for clients while standardizing solutions and meeting requirements. Enterprise Technology Architecture: * The goal: enhance system performance while merchant transactions doubled following the United and Lufthansa merger, ensuring PCI compliance while streamlining database and archives. * My leadership increased business with existing and new clients, identifying opportunities that delivered business value. * We improved processing speed while reducing system resource utilization and without incurring any additional hardware. Agile Solutions for Business: * The goal: improve IT system performance for a mid-sized warehouse company, laying out architecture and system requirements for their supply chain management system. * My leadership brought an agile development process to the architect team. * We standardized deliverables leading to increased productivity. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Technology Solutions: Java | .Net | Oracle Architecture Manager – Operational/Real-Time Systems; HR & Finance Systems, United Airlines – October 2004 to September 2011 I advanced to direct teams in optimizing real-time systems and developing enterprise architecture for HR, finance, real-time, and operational systems. LEADERSHIP PROFILE HIGHLIGHTS OF TECHNOLOGY AND OPERATIONAL LEADERSHIP

TO DRIVE ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGE AND GROWTH

EXCEL DATA RESEARCH 2012–2015

Situation:

With IT approaching 50% of all revenue, the firm required a complete technology refresh of inadequate employee-facing computing platforms and a consolidation of product platforms obtained through numerous acquisitions to correct issues related to crashing networks, unstable email, and outdated computing and product platforms.

Employee satisfaction with internal IT services peaked at 77% and employee IT engagement at 55.8%. Member data was stored across disparate systems and could not be correlated and accessed in a single view. The workforce was growing rapidly from 2,000 to 3,700 with a high percentage of computer savvy, social media oriented millennials.

Action Plan:

Built the case for investment in the corporate IT function and received funding. Within the first 10 months, refreshed every employee with new Windows and Mac operating systems, built a new service desk, gutted and upgraded the corporate network, stabilized email, and built an Enterprise Data Management function.

In addition, pitched and won approval for architecting and building a firm-wide data center, and invested in Salesforce resources to build the necessary functionality to allow all member interactions to be known.

Results:

Delivered the data center utilizing private, public, and hybrid cloud technologies. For the first time in company history, all products were housed under one virtual roof, allowing for data sharing, code sharing, and platform sharing. In the first 3 years, operating spend fell $2.7M with increased savings projected for years to come.

Implemented Big Data solutions that provided key insights to HR on employee behaviors and to Marketing on member behaviors, allowing for targeted campaigns to improve member engagement and revenue realization.

Member performance measurements increased by 60%.

Employee satisfaction with IT services increased from 77% to 98% and IT engagement (measured in a global survey offered every 2 years) grew from 55.8% to 68.8%. Network outages were not logged for 2+ years.

Nine disparate applications were moved to Salesforce to deliver the first-ever 360-degree view of the member, providing insights on how to best serve members.

Won Breaking the Mold Award for the most innovative uses of Salesforce, 2013 Dreamforce Conference.

HEALTHTEK, INC. 2009–2012

Situation:

With 120M unique patients within the company’s databases, it was imperative to consume, process, and present refreshed healthcare data to the analytics platforms in a predictable, efficient manner. In addition, analysis of more than 8 billion medical events dictated the necessity for deep, broad queries to return results quickly and efficiently.

Action Plan:

Assembled a team of industry experts to provide the product delivery functions of release management, applications operations, database engineering, and data-center scalability.

Results:

Automated product releases to production generated 92% improvement in implementation time (from 240 minutes to 20 minutes) with high quality scores.

New member onboarding shortened from 60 days to 6-19 days from contract signing.

Data refreshes occurred within 3 days instead of 2 weeks or more.

Query performance improved from weeks to hours or minutes.

Technology never got in the way of member onboarding and ROI realization.

Revenue grew 4X and the company launched an IPO in 2015.

GLOBALON (A BW-TEN COMPANY) 2007–2009

Situation:

Globalon’s business strategy was shifting from one of delivering Internet connection services and content delivery to becoming a marketing powerhouse leveraging its well-visited content pages. The existing system required a 24-hour lag time in collecting the data for measuring the effectiveness of marketing campaigns.

Action Plan: Re-architected data collection routines by rapidly consuming billions of web-page clicks into a highly scalable and efficient data warehouse and performing analytics on a state-of-the-art, massively parallel system.

Results:

Lag time reduced from 24 hours to within one hour of campaign launches.

The near real-time visibility led to significant competitive advantage when landing new marketing accounts along with the potential for increased revenue and profitability.

STATE POWER OF NEW YORK 1992–1995

Situation:

The company had hundreds of draftsmen/engineers in a central location drawing all the blueprints for “as-built” systems as well as designs for new implementations. This included wiring and raceway drawings, complex system flows for nuclear and fossil power plants, and designs for installation of multimillion-dollar equipment (i.e. pumps, motors, generators, reactor parts, and cooling systems).

The firm had 800,000 E-size paper drawings that were manually maintained – an extremely inefficient system with high costs, no portability, low turnaround times, and no intelligence built into the maps.

Action Plan:

Led team to evaluate plotter and scanning technologies to rasterize the existing drawings. Investigated mapping software to manipulate the raster drawings and software to create new intelligent vector drawings from scratch. Replaced drafters’ pencils and paper with new computer workstations.

Selected client server technology that could be distributed across work locations throughout New York and the 5 boroughs. Purchased the firm’s first HP UNIX mainframe (replacing token ring, IBM system), the first E size plotters and scanners, the first Oracle database, and the first HP UNIX workstations.

Results:

State Power was no longer in the paper-drawing business; engineers and power plant operators had full access to all “as-built” drawings via an application built on Oracle.

Built the company’s first Ethernet WAN connecting all power plants and corporate headquarters.

When an issue was found with a particular component, intelligent maps could be searched to pinpoint the location across the entire infrastructure. Maps could be shared, modified, and updated anywhere, anytime.

The team won an AutoDesk award for implementing the largest UNIX installation of software nationwide.

Personally won a Management Incentive Award for delivery of the system and the many innovations involved.

HEADLINE Global Director- Product Management | Corporate Strategy & Planning - Driving innovation in products, processes & projects

SUMMARY Marvin Gaye once melodiously proclaimed, “happiness today is just a song away” and nothing rings truer in my life. Music was first love in this world and as an avid music listener growing up I spent countless hours listening. But not simply bobbing my head to the beat - active, engaged listening. Underneath the wall of sounds and lyrics, I discovered layer upon layer - all constructed to tell a meaningful story. I’ve come to realize that designing and developing superior software/data solutions requires exactly the same skills that I spent so many hours refining. It all starts with active, engaged listening – to your customers, markets, competitors, and to those leading the way in terms of innovation. Starting my career in communications, I couldn’t have envisioned that I’d be drawn to a future in product management. Now, with more than 10 years of increasing responsibility in product management, product marketing, and marcom roles, I’ve harnessed the ability to take the insight gained through active listening, combine it with meaningful data, and piece together the layers to tell clear, concise, and compelling stories using powerful software. I believe it’s better to say, “I don’t know” than to guess at the answers. Yet, asking the right questions almost always leads to the answers. Product management has become a passion that affords me the opportunity to ask questions to bright minds from companies of all shapes and sizes. Beyond that, it’s set me on a quest to build better, more meaningful solutions to improve the way our customers do business. When I feel I’ve created something that truly has a positive impact on the daily lives of our customers, that’s music to my ears. HEADLINE Frank DeLuca Global Engineering Manager | Six Sigma On-Site Solutions | Applications & Integration | Regulations & Compliance Industry: Transportation/Trucking/Railroad

SUMMARY “I follow three rules: Do the right thing, do the best you can, and always show people you care.” Lou Holtz Electrical power, gold mining, marine transport - these are enterprises that rely on heavy-duty, high-powered equipment that works – non-stop. Owners and employees expect on-call services 24/7. They expect and demand good diagnostics, fast repairs, and insights into their own misuse of equipment. Downtime can cost millions of dollars/ day in lost revenues. The designers of the equipment – including diesel engines of the kind that power tugboats, locomotives, electrical generators, and mining equipment – want fast, accurate evaluations when the equipment hasn’t delivered as they hoped it would. As a dedicated, creative manufacturing engineer, I take pride in my success at solving sophisticated on-and-off site problems, and in building strong teams needed to deliver timely and accurate solutions. Investigative fieldwork, trouble-shooting, diagnostics, and communication with operators, mechanics, and on-site engineers – these are the strengths I’ve built over the course of my career. My clients want reports, quick counter-measures, and reliable longer-term answers. They want to know what they’re doing right and wrong. They trust me to supply the best answers possible, as quickly as possible. I earn customers “for life.” My ability to listen critically, evaluate information, provide feedback, and train/mentor internal/external customers with diplomacy, confidentiality, accuracy, and professionalism drives my success. Whether it’s creating a beautiful piece of furniture, tutoring, renovating houses, restoring old vehicles, or building business relationships, I always follow Holtz’s three rules.
