2 Use the Search charm

Another way to quickly search from anywhere in Windows 8 is to open up the Charm bar. On a touchscreen, you can do this by just quickly flicking your finger from the right-hand side of the screen. Or with a mouse, you simply hover the cursor to the top-right corner of the screen and then select ‘Search’.

1 Search from the Start screen

In Windows Vista and Windows 7, you could press the [Windows] key to open up the Start menu and then begin typing to search your programs and documents. In Windows 8, it’s exactly the same. Simply press the [Windows] key to bring up the Start screen, then just begin typing and Windows 8 starts the search.

4 Choose what to search for

You’ll see three categories beneath the text box: Apps, Settings and Files, each with a number that indicates how many results the search has found in each category. Clicking on the name of the category displays the results. For a faster search, select the category first.

6 Search shortcuts to find things faster

On a keyboard, there are a number of shortcuts to speed up search. To search for apps, press [Windows] key and [Q]. To search for settings, tap [Windows] and [W], to search for files, press [Windows] and [F]. If you’re in an app, search within it by pressing [Windows] and [Q].

5 Search in your Windows 8 apps

When you’re searching, you’ll see that under the three categories is a list of all the apps you have installed on your Windows 8 device. Clicking an app enables you to search straight from that app. For example, you could type in a postcode, then select the Maps app.

3 Begin typing to search Windows 8

Now you’ll see a text box. As you type, Windows 8 instantly begins searching, so you don’t even have to wait to get results. The more you type, the narrower the search results become, but sometimes you only need to type part of the name to find what you’re looking for.
