Degree course: Master of Business Administration (MBA)

The areas of research and teaching are directly linked at the FOM University. This allows Master students

to actively participate in research. Institutes and competence centers are assigned to all university

departments, whose projects and activities provide important input for teaching, among other things.

What makes an MBA degree course at FOM special is that you

learn how to take the effects of your decision-making processes

in all areas of the company into account. You acquire one of

the most crucial skills in business, marking you as a top manager

in an executive role. Behind the 360° entrepreneurial view

lies a learning concept developed by FOM: Integral Total

Management (ITM).

Developing a 360° view is supported by the interdisciplinary approach

of the MBA lectures, among other things. Since the degree course is

aimed at graduates from all areas of specialisation who have at least

one year of professional experience, you can benefit from the experi-

ences and perspectives of your coursemates, with each individual

bringing their profes sional background to the table. This gives you

the opportunity to gain a practical insight into other working fields

and expand your horizons.

As a general course of study, the MBA provides in-depth specialist

knowledge from all areas of management, such as economics,

marketing, financial management, business law and digitisation.

You build on your professional and personal leadership skills by

working in groups and exam ining case studies. You also have the

choice to select one out of seven areas of specialisation in order to

gain more targeted knowledge of a particular field.

After completing your MBA, you will be able to take on a manage-

ment role in an international company, develop and implement

global strategies and optimise cross-company procedures. Or, alter-

natively, you will be optimally prepared for taking over or founding

a company of your own.

Upon successful completion of the

study programme, you will be awarded

the academic degree of

Master of Business Administration (MBA)

With the MBA degree course from FOM University of Applied Sciences, you will gain

key qualifications for management. The aim is to optimally prepare you for the challenges

faced by global companies and help you develop further from simply a manager to an

international leader.

The FOM MBA: for clever minds with great futures ahead of them

1

“Business decisions frequently entail complex processes. Analysing

these beforehand and developing appropriate solutions are key

factors that determine the success of a business. Managers who

have these skills and can perform confidently in the international

business arena against the background of an increasingly globalised

economy are there fore more valuable than ever before.

The MBA provides you with comprehensive skills and qualificati-

ons to take on such positions.”Professor Dr Dr habil. Eric Frère

Integral Total Management (ITM)Gain a 360° entrepreneurial view

Analysis techniques and checklists specially developed for the MBA support the

ITM method and ensure that you avoid an isolated view of individual

management disciplines.

As part of each assignment, you use guided questions to think through

your business decision in terms of its effects on all areas of the com-

pany, such as marketing and sales, finance or human resources.

Ethics, sustainability and digitisation are three dimensions that

are always considered in the overall process.

In terms of its research focus and study content, the ITM concept

is primarily geared towards economic questions and the institu-

tional and international framework conditions faced by companies.

This orientation is of key importance, as small and medium-sized

companies, in particular, require more general action from their

managers, and large enterprises are increasingly being restructured

into smaller, more flexible units.

Working alongside your studies therefore represents the ideal combi-

nation. You can apply your newly acquired knowledge directly in your

professional environment, and at the same time, you can incorporate practical

projects from your job into your degree. Theory and practice, study and work are

all closely intertwined in the MBA at FOM.

In the MBA degree course at FOM, you will learn how to think and act on an integrative,

practice-oriented basis. The Integral Total Management (ITM) concept developed by FOM uses

case studies to direct your attention to the complex interrelationships between the individual

specialist disciplines and decision-making fields of the management world. In both the learning

modules and their assessments, your lecturers ensure that you take into account the practical

consequences for the entire company in your approach and decisions.

The FOM University of Applied Sciences was founded by trade associations. This close connection

to the business world is one reason for the especially practice-oriented approach of the FOM

MBA degree course. From the outset, you learn theoretical principles and their practical application

in the overall context of all company processes. The aim is to prove every theoretical concept in

management practice.

Case studies:

Develop practical solutions

Using real-world problems from the everyday working world, you work on addressing

complex entrepreneurial issues and developing alternative decision tracks. The solutions

for your case studies will be assessed and debated directly in plenary sessions through

open results presentations and discussions in the lectures. The practical learning is also

reflected in the course assessments: you do not sit exams; instead assignments are given

exclusively in English, and you work on practical tasks.

Leadership skills:

Grow together

In addition to acquiring specialist knowledge, developing leadership skills is an essential

component of the MBA degree course. You hold group presentations and discussions

throughout your study programme at FOM in order to work on things like teamwork and

debating skills, and your ability to give and receive criticism, as well as trying out leader-

ship methods and improving your confidence with regard to negotiations. You will also

expand your network and connect with experts from among your coursemates in a wide

range of specialist fields.

Interdisciplinary approach:

Exchange experiences with others

The concept of the MBA study programme incorporates the personal, academic and pro-

fessional expert knowledge of every single participant in the lectures. The interdisciplinary

approach of the lectures means that you gain an insight into a wide range of companies

and working fields, as well as their problems and possible solutions. You can apply your

coursemates‘ professional experiences to the approach taken in your own business practice.

As a result, you are able to expand your horizons far beyond those of a traditional univer-

sity degree.

Soft skills:

The key to success

Successful managers need not only specialist expertise, but also the right mindset.

Accordingly, your studies will include key elements such as assertiveness, crisis manage-

ment and team and solutionoriented thinking. Whether part of the compulsory modules

or additional workshops*. This means that you can expand and deepen your soft skills

according to your individual wishes and needs.

Practical experience: success comes from DOING

2 3

* Workshops are optional. A minimum number of participants is required for a workshop to take place.

In the third semester of your degree, you will have the chance to receive personal coaching

specifically geared toward MBA students. This coaching is a free and voluntary opportunity that

helps you develop your skills and grow personally, as well as plan your career. Key elements of the

FOM coaching concept include: a personality and skills analysis, the identification of professional

goals and measures to give you the essential qualifications for the position you want.

Personal coaching3

“Those who want to achieve great things have to look to their

strengths. The MBA programme helps budding managers in

their personal growth, such as making presentations in English

and solving problems in a heterogeneous team environment.

This is what differentiates them from other graduates.“

Dr Thomas Marquardt

Global Head of Human Resources Infineon Technologies AG

I II III

A three-stage professional personality and skills analysis helps you discover where your strengths lie, what jobs match your

profile and what skills you can build on further in order to enjoy personal and professional growth.

At FOM, coaching takes a methodologi-

cal approach: during the kick-off event

you learn about the FOM coaching model

and how coaching works as a method of

encouraging personal growth. Then you

have your first coaching session together

with your coursemates. In the course of

this session, you define your professional

goals and become familiar with the

method ology in a series of games.

A preview of personal coaching follows.

What are your goals?

After the kick-off event, you work

through the “Bochumer Inventar zur be-

rufsbezogenen Persönlichkeitsbeschrei-

bung” (BIP), a personality analysis that

uses 210 statements about professional

orientation, working behaviour, social

skills and psychological makeup to iden-

tify 14 job-relevant personality aspects.

This analysis is ultimately used to create

your personality and skills profile.

What does your personality profile

look like?

In subsequent personal coaching, your

personality and skills profile is compared

with your professional goals. Does the

goal need to be adapted? Which aspects

of your personality could you target for

development in order to fulfil the new

role successfully? You work on strategies

for your professional future together

with your coach.

Which strategy will get you to

the finishing line?

FOM: What motivated you to do your MBA?

Dr C.N.: I decided to choose the MBA as I was looking for a

practice-orientated and short course of studies which “got

right down to business” and honed my entrepreneurial

complete overview. It was important to me to meet employed

fellow students during the course, so that I was able to

exchange information about study contents if necessary and

to establish new contacts. I knew that I would meet an

ambitious target group. This appealed to me.

FOM: Why did you decide to do the MBA at the FOM?

Dr C.N.: The university is a renowned and established

institute and always nearby due to its network of university

locations throughout Germany. The course of studies at the

FOM was easily compatible with professional and personal

life. The planned duration of studies consisted of lectures

every second weekend – so it was possible to go on holiday

in between lectures as well. The optimal general conditions

made studying easier, be it through digital services, such

as the Online Campus, the modern premises or the

comprehensive organisation of the course. A further reason

that led to me choosing the FOM was the networking

philosophy. The lectures are very well connected with

businesses and research and integrate students into their

networks. The cost-benefit ratio is impressive as well.

You could even describe the FOM’s offer as a “Best Deal”.

FOM: How did the MBA affect your further

professional career?

Dr C.N.: The MBA was a “turning point” for me. The compact

ment components, was a strong foundation on the path to

The thysenkrupp-CEO Middle East & Africa talks about how the MBA programme at the FOM

prepared him for leadership tasks in higher management. It was particularly the challenge

of coping with the volume of the MBA whilst working that gave him the drive to take on

demanding tasks later on.

higher management. Combining professional life and the

MBA means managing a high work volume, which should not

be underestimated. However, this challenge gave me

motivation, which I took with me on my professional path.

FOM: Later, after the MBA, you worked as a lecturer

at the FOM and know both sides of the story. As a

lecturer, what do you value at the FOM?

Dr C.N.: As a lecturer, I value that the FOM is effective and

efficient. The organisation, the good processes and clear

structures as well as the employees’ openness and motivation

are remarkable. I also recognise that the FOM is very entre-

preneurial. The university is continuously evolving, is customer-

orientated and is always interested in the task in hand.

The FOM offers all MBA students optional international exchange programmes lasting between

five days and four weeks. During these exchanges, you build on both your intercultural skills and

your expert knowledge. Upon agreement in advance, modules you pass abroad can also be trans-

ferred to your MBA Degree course. This saves time – from several modules to an entire semester.

The FOM International Office will advise you on the general conditions and additional costs.

The FOM international exchange programmes offer the opportu-

nity to prepare for working in an international context. Each ex-

change programme has its own focus. For example, the Spring

Conference New York focuses on the “American Way of Negotia-

tion”, while the emphasis of the Summer Conference Cape Town

is on new management styles and eceonomic development in

emerging markets.

Most programmes are taught in English, which will help you to improve

your language skills. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to gain

insights into other business cultures and country-wide practices and ex-

pand your network to include valuable international contacts. Thanks

to their short duration, the programmes also line up well with your ex-

isting professional commitments.
