Training Calendar - 9

TrainingTraining is the gathering of knowledge that leads to a qualification. Traditionally training was carried out in a classroom forum with a trainer or teachers imparting knowledge to students and the student’s knowledge being tested through assignments, class work and exams.

Currently, training begins with an assessment of recognition of prior learning, recognition of current competencies along with an onsite assessment and possibly face to face teaching of any gaps identified. Some gaps can be filled with assessment tasks like assignments or questioning, this assists in reducing time off work and also speeds up the time it takes to complete part of or a full qualification.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)Prior learning may have been achieved on completion of an apprenticeship/traineeship, other formal training that you have received a certificate for or skills picked up over time.

Proof of RPL needs to be presented in a portfolio with copies of original documents signed by a JP or Solicitor. Documents may include certificates of completion, certificates of attendance and 3rd party reports or references.

Naturally Occuring EvidenceThese are skills and experience that you have learnt over time and that you can demonstrate consistently. Demonstration of these skills can be through a combination of questioning and carrying out a specific task (skill) for an assessor or by way of evidence through photos and third party reports.

AssessmentAn assessment is where an assessor observes and records the skills (competencies) being carried out either on-site or in a simulated environment.

How is an on-site assessment carried out?The onsite assessment is performed at a location that enables the participant to demonstrate skills and knowledge specific to their chosen trade. The ideal onsite practical assessment is where high skill level units can be demonstrated e.g for carpentry, pitching a roof enables the participant to show knowledge of roof construction, trigonometry, handling materials and using hand and mechanical tools. Some participants make up scaled down models to do this. Your assessor will help you with finding an appropriate location or simulated environment to conduct the assessment.

QualificationA qualification is a formal certification, issued by a relevant approved body, in recognition that a person has achieved learning outcomes or competencies relevant to identified individual, professional, industry or community needs.

Statement of Attainment (SOA)A Statement of Attainment is issued by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) when an individual has completed one or more units of competency from nationally recognized qualification(s)/ course(s).

PortfolioA portfolio is a collection of evidence, such as examples of work, photos, references etc produced by a participant to prove his or her competence.

CompetenciesCompetencies are the skills and knowledge that industry has stated that a participant requires to be competent in a specific qualification. Qualifications are made up of compulsory competencies and elective competencies.

“I had plenty of experience but no formal qualification. The thought of doing a full apprenticeship was not an option so I signed up with the Master Builders after attending an information night. Having my existing skills recognised and shortfalls identified was fantastic. My assessor was like a mentor guiding me through with positive encouragement. I have completed my Cert III now and have enrolled in

the Cert IV in Building. The Master Builders has given me the confidence and backing

to follow my dreams of becoming a builder. I can’t thank them enough.”
