Mass Production of

Antique ClocksBy Andrew Ragonese

Quick Facts• The main goal of the project was to develop an

efficient method of mass producing accurate, long-

lasting antique clocks

• The project is completely designed using 3D

modeling software

• Two complete clocks have been manufactured

• Each clock is easy to use, is visually appealing, and

keeps time for five days on a single winding

The project began as an intricate

Inventor model…

…and evolved into two physical clocks!

How it Works

The weight provides the force necessary to drive the gear train and pull the hands around the clock.

The pendulum regulates how quickly the clock keeps time. Raising the bob makes the clock run

faster, while lowering it makes the clock run slower.

The escapement gear prevents the weight from crashing to the ground by allowing one tooth to

“escape” for every swing of the pendulum.

Swings back and forth with the pendulum every two seconds

Rotates once per minute

The compound gear train works to slow down the escapement’s motion and transfer it to the hands of

the clock.

The minute shaft rotates once per hour

1:60 gear ratio between second and minute shafts

1:12 gear ratio between minute and hour shafts

With a computerized model as the prototype, it is easy to make new parts and produce multiple clocks.

Aside from a few minor design changes, the two finished clocks are exactly the same.
