THATCHER RESIDENCE

MARVINPADILLA

VENICE, CALIFORNIA

WORKSAMPLES l 01

Thatcher House was conceived as a hybrid of early mod-ernism and contemporary architecture from Japan and the Mediterranean. These styles respond to the climate of Southern California and the eclectic nature of Venice Beach. These influences are apparent in the Schindler-esque corner windows, Soji style horizontal proportioned sliding wood & glass doors, and textured, sculpturally shaped white stucco volumes.

The floor plans are organized with a series of L-shaped spatial relationships with glazed corners creating diagonal views, accentuating the depth, maximizing the expansive-ness of the lot dimensions, and blurring the interior/exte-rior boundaries. The most important of these such glazed corners is created by two 8 feet wide by 11 feet high, steel framed, sliding glass pocket doors which allow the living area to flow into the pool patio. The L-shaped forms repeat themselves not only in plan, but in both exterior and interior elevations to create a three dimensional harmony of form and proportion. The longitudinal circulation con-nected by the 3-story stairway compliment the open plan and minimize the amount of space devoted to circulation.

TYLIE MALIBU STORE

MARVINPADILLA

MALIBU, CALIFORNIA

WORKSAMPLES l 02

+

Tylie Malibu is a store remodel located within the Malibu Country Mart. The client appreciated the Thatcher resi-dence’s asthetics and wanted to replicate the look and feel in a retail setting. While the square footage of the store is relatively small, there were some complexties involved with the design of the store.

The facade of the store is composed of a large sliding door that also includes a smaller swinging door within the sliding portion of the door. The sliding door partition is made from mahogony wood and the barn door hardware is concealed with a custom mohogany fascia board. The entire sliding door and fixed window storefront is attached to a steel beam frame. The facade is also features sal-vaged wood beams from south-east Asia and a custom wood bench in front of the fixed window portion of the facade.

The interior of the store features a built-in wood display that frames the openings for the fitting room and powder room.

WORKSAMPLES l 05

This project comprised of extensively remodeling an exist-ing single family residence set on a hillside lot in Rancho Palos Verde with expansive views of the ocean. The house needed extensive structural upgrades including replac-ing an existing stem wall footing before the remodeling could comence. The exterior of the house remained mostly intact, while the interiors were completely remod-eled. The existing kitchen and dining room were combined into one large great room with custom dining table and a 11’-0” window was installed in place of an exisiting bay window. Custom stainless steel veneered cabinets with Caesarstone counters were installed. The staineless steel veneered cabinets also were carried into the new adjacent pantry/laundry room. The rest of the downstairs remodel included new wood flooring throughout and adding an openining to a stair landing to add light to a previously dark entry foyer.

Upstairs, a bedroom was converted into a walk in master closet of the master bedroom while the master bath was also remodeled with a soaking tub and seperate steam shower as well as new finishes throughout. New finishes and fixtures were added to the other bedrooms, office and bathrooms upstairs.
