2.2 Appropriate Use

The Martin SQC#2 Secondary Cleaner can only be used for clean-ing a conveyor belt in the lower run of a conveyor belt system. Forthis, the scraper must be installed directly behind a head drum or acounter-pressure roller.

It can be used on conveyor belts with a maximum belt width of 2400mm and a maximum conveying speed of 5 m/s.

Any other use of this product is deemed to be inappropriate. If youwould like to use the MARTIN® SQC2™ Secondary Cleaner for anyother purpose, please contact the Customer Service at Martin Engi-neering. We shall be pleased to assist you with the product configu-ration.

2.2.1 Conveyor belt systems with open transfer systems

This installation manual describes the installation on a conveyor beltsystem with an encapsulated delivery system. For the installation onan open delivery systems different MARTIN® installation consolescan be used.

If installation conditions prove to be difficult, as is the case with im-passable static components, or using the head drum as the tensionpoint; Martin Engineering or a representative can help with the posi-tioning or find customized solutions.

2.2.2 Use in EX-protection areas

Under certain circumstance the MARTIN® SQC2™ SecondaryCleaner can also be used in potentially explosive areas. ContactMartin Engineering for more information on use in potentially explo-sive areas.

The use of the scraper in a device protection category that is higherthan that specified or under operating conditions other than thosespecified by Martin Engineering is not permissible or may be doneonly if Martin Engineering has granted its approval.

2.2.3 Operating limits of this product

The use of the product mentioned here is only allowed within thespecified specifications. Using it in a higher than specified equip-ment category or under operating conditions other than thosenamed and previously specified by Martin Engineering is consideredto be inappropriate use and can only be carried out if approved byMartin Engineering.

If the MARTIN® SQC2™ Secondary Cleaner needs to be used for adifferent purpose, then Martin Engineering or a representative canhelp with the product specification.

2.3 Safety at work

2.3.1 Safety instructions, safety at work

This installation manual should be read through completely beforebeginning work on the product or the customer's conveyor belt sys-tem.

The operator has to make sure that all installation, inspections, andmaintenance tasks are carried out exclusively by authorised ex-perts.

Basically, all work on conveyor belt systems and their accessorieshas to be done when the system is at a standstill. The instructions inthe relevant installation manual, which describes how to shut-downthe conveyor belt, must be adhered to.

Upon completion of work, all safety equipment and protectiveguards should be reinstalled and put back into operation.

Before commissioning the installation should be completed. Beforethe conveyor belt system can be used again, the flawless executionof all steps should be checked. All notes on installation and commis-sioning of the product should be observed.

2.3.2 Obligations of the operator

The operator of this product should ensure that the personnel al-lowed to install, maintain and use this product are only those who

• know the rules for safety and accident prevention,

• are instructed in the product’s use, and have read andunderstood this installation manual.

2.3.3 Authorised personnel

Personnel are considered to be authorised, that have necessarytraining, technical experience, knowledge on the relevant standardsand guidelines and are also in a position to assess any task to rec-ognise critical situation at an early phase.

Personnel are considered to be authorised, that have been instruct-ed in the use of the product and have completely read and under-stood this installation manual.

3 Description of this product

3.1 Construction and function

With its individually spring-loaded carbide blades, the MARTIN®

SQC2™ Secondary Cleaner provides effective cleaning withoutdamage to itself, the conveyor belt or any possible splices. The rub-ber dampers of the carbide blades act as dampers, but they alsoprovide the necessary contact pressure for the MARTIN® SQC2™Secondary Cleaner.

3.2 Spring tensioners

The MARTIN® SQC2™ Secondary Cleaner and the Martin Engi-neering spring tensioners specifically developed for it give excellentresults and conform to the general state of technology.

Martin Engineering recommends the following spring tensioners forthe MARTIN® SQC2™ Secondary Cleaner:

• MARTIN® SQC2™ spring tensioning device, Part no.SQC2-35701-XX

NOTEA poorly or incorrectly installed product can disturb the conveyorprocess or to contamination of the conveyed bulk material.The operator is therefore responsible for implementing the neces-sary counter measures.When used with contaminants, Martin Engineering or a represen-tative can help with the positioning or with customised solutions.

3.3 Type explanation

The Martin SQC#2 Secondary Cleaner is available in three differentversions:

• With aluminium cartridge for general use:

• Without aluminium cartridge for additional use inpotentially explosive atmospheres where aluminium is notallowed,

• A mini version for cramped installation conditions.

4 Installation preparation

4.1 Before installation

4.1.1 Materials and tools required

In addition to the standard tools, the following special instruments formay be needed for the installation and maintenance of the MARTIN®

SQC2™ Secondary Cleaner.

• Lifting equipment with a capacity greater than the weight ofthe secondary cleaner (note the weight on the deliverynote).

4.1.2 Preparatory measures

1. At delivery check the following points:

• Is the delivery complete? Is the number of palettes / cases/ containers the same as the number on the delivery note?

• Does all the transport packaging appear to be undamaged?Is there damage which may indicate that the containedproducts may be damaged?

2. If the delivery is not complete or there appears to be sometransport damage, document and have the freight forwarderconfirm. All damaged products should be saved for inspection.

NOTEPay attention to the following checks and carry them out com-pletely.The freight forwarder is responsible for any transport damage! For any damage claims, please contact the freight forwarder.

3. Depending on the scope of the order, the delivery should con-tain the following parts:

• MARTIN® SQC2™ Secondary Cleaner.

• Two MARTIN® SQC2™ spring tensioning devices.

• Installation manual, plus warning and safety labels.

4. Missing or damaged parts should be reported to Martin Engi-neering or the authorised dealer.

5 Installation

5.1 Safety instructions

DANGER OF INJURY!Body parts and/or clothing can be caught by rotating parts or bythe moving conveyor belt.Before any installation or maintenance work is carried out, ensurethat all power sources to the conveyor belt system and its accesso-ries are switched off and secured against inadvertent reactivation.Use warning signs!

WARNING! EXPLOSION HAZARD!In enclosed areas there is an increased risk of explosion whenusing a cutting torch or welding equipment!Before use, check the level of gas and dust in the air.

5.2 Installation of the MARTIN® SQC2™ Secondary Cleaner

5.2.1 Determining the installation position

Determining the position of the shaft and the spring tensioner of theMARTIN® SQC2™ Secondary Cleaner must be done on both sidesof the chute wall. The position is determined where the shaft of theMARTIN® SQC2™ Secondary Cleaner passes through the chutewall or where the spring tensioner is installed on the chute wall.

The MARTIN® SQC2™ Secondary Cleaner is delivered along with aspring tensioner. This is disassembled at the factory before deliveryand is reassembled during the installation along with the SecondaryCleaner.

The installation of the MARTIN® SQC2™ Secondary Cleaner andthe spring tensioner is described in this installation manual.

Following is an overview of the installation steps:

It is possible to have different local conditions that require differentworking steps, which are shown below:

Installation on an encapsulated delivery system

• Carry out the instructions according to 5.2.2.

Installation on an encapsulated delivery system with installationopening and support for the conveyor belt blade is already present.

• Carry out the instructions in 5.2.3.

Installation on an open delivery system

• Use the local resources to ensure that the dimensions forthe installation are correctly maintained.

1. Prior to commencing installation, switch off and de-energise theconveyor belt and all accessories and secure them against be-ing switched on inadvertently. The MARTIN® SQC2™ Second-ary Cleaner should ideally be installed near a head drum orcounter-pressure roller. The distance should not be more than100 mm.

2. Determine the midpoint position of the blade shaft as describebelow for the secondary cleaner.

3. Mark the vertical and horizontal centre line of the driving drumto determine the midpoint (A) of the driving drum. The verticalline must run at right angles to the conveyor line.

4. Mark one position at a distance of 51 to 102 mm in the convey-ing direction from the point where the conveyor belt leaves thehead drum (B).

5. At this position (C) draw a vertical line at right angles to the con-veyor belt.

6. Take the measurements in Fig. 1 and mark the installationholes of the spring tensioning device (D).

7. Make the cut-out and drill the installation holes as shown in Fig.2.

8. If the conveyor belt is not adequately supported at the contactpoint between scraper blade and conveyor belt, a conveyor beltsupport must be installed (see step 6 of ‘After the installation’).

9. Repeat steps 1 to 6 on the opposite side of the chute wall.

WARNING! DANGER OF INJURY!The secondary cleaner is heavy and can cause serious injury if itfalls when being lifted or moved.Only lift the secondary cleaner using suitable lifting equipment orwith several persons. Do not stand under suspended loads.

5.2.2 Installation of the spring tensioner

1. To install the bracket, it must first be dismantled from the springtensioner and installed on the installation holes shown in Fig. 2.It is important to pay attention to the alignment of the bracket asshown in Fig. 3.

2. Reinsert the spring tensioner in the bracket as shown. Also payattention to the correct alignment of the spring tensioner.

3. Reinsert the top locking mechanism.

4. Remove the shaft bracket clamp screw.

5.2.3 Installing the scraper

1. Remove the locking pin of the blade cartridge.

NOTEThe following steps 1 and 2 are only necessary if it is a scraperwith an aluminium cartridge. In scrapers without a cartridge, simply insert the blade shaft in thespring tensioner as described in step 3 and shown in Fig. 8.

2. Then remove the blade cartridge.

3. Insert the blade shaft in the installation opening and in thespring tensioning device.

4. In so doing, make sure that the built-in locking pin is positionedon the opposite side.

NOTEPoints 4 to 7 are only necessary if it is a scraper with an aluminiumcartridge.For scrapers without an aluminum cartridge, proceed as shown inFig. 13 with the alignment of the scraper blade.

5. Tighten the locking screws on both sides of the spring tension-ing device for the blade shaft by hand.

NOTETighten the locking screws so tight that the blade shaft does nottwist when the blade cartridge is installed.

CAUTION! DANGER OF DAMAGE!Secure the safety bolts of the blade cartridge with the cable forscrapers with an aluminium cartridge.The blade cartridge must be secured before the shaft is insertedinto the spring tensioning device.

6. Insert the blade cartridge into the locking mechanism of theblade shaft. Make certain that the cartridge does not twist in theprocess.

5.2.4 Centre the secondary cleaner below the conveyor belt

Measure on both sides the distance (A) to (B) between the edge ofthe cleaner blades and the conveyor belt edge.

Slide the secondary cleaner shaft until the distance A is equal to dis-tance B. The conveyor belt should protrude about 50 to 100 mm onboth the left and the right sides. The cleaner blades should be posi-tioned in the middle under the conveyor belt.

CAUTION! DANGER OF DAMAGE!Damage to the belt edge and/or the cleaner blades can be caused by conveyor belt drift.Align the secondary cleaner by following the instructions below.

5.2.5 Adjust the secondary cleaner shaft parallel to the conveyor belt

Measure the distance on both sides between the secondary cleanershaft and the head drum or the counter-pressure roller. The mea-surements on both sides must be equal.

5.2.6 Levelling the secondary cleaner shaft

Level the secondary cleaner shaft to the head drum or check that thecleaner blades are positioned evenly against the conveyor belt.Tighten the spring tensioner locking screws.

Once all the measurements are correct and the secondary cleaneris adjusted, it can then be fixed in position; if not, it should be rein-stalled or re-positioned.

5.2.7 Tensioning the secondary cleaner

1. Before tightening, turn both threaded rods until the bladestouch both sides of the belt.

2. When all blades touch the belt, tension the scraper against theconveyor belt by a half to full turn on both sides.

5.3 Test run

1. If the secondary cleaner lifts the conveyor belt, a pressure rollerneeds to be installed over the point of contact between thescraper blade and the conveyor belt at a distance of 50 mmagainst the travel direction to support the conveyor belt..

2. Carefully clean the outside chute wall on the operator sideabove the tensioning device. Attach the precautionary labels forconveyor products (Part no. 23395) on the chute wall visible forthe machine operator.

NOTERead through this section thoroughly before starting any work on the conveyor belt scraper or the customer's conveyor belt system.

3. Remove all tools and fire protection covers from the installationarea and conveyor belt.

4. Carry a one hour test run of the conveyor belt system.

5. After the test run for an hour, shut down the conveyor belt sys-tem, switch off the power supply and secure it against beingswitched on again inadvertently.

6. Make sure that all securing parts are tightened. Tighten anyloose connections.

7. Check the conveyor belt scraper for the following points:

• Wear and tear: a little wear and tear is normal, as soon asthe wiper blades have got adjusted to the contour of theconveyor belt, this stops happening.

• Material accumulation: No material should haveaccumulated between the cleaner blades and on the returnside.

CAUTION! FLYING PIECES!Tools or installation parts that are left behind can fall from a moving conveyor belt and cause slight injuries and property damage.After the installation first remove tools from the installation point and from the conveyor belt before turning the power on.

WARNING! DANGER OF INJURY!Body parts and/or clothing can be caught by rotating parts or by the moving conveyor belt.Before any installation or maintenance work is carried out, ensure that all power sources to the conveyor belt system and its accesso-ries are switched off and secured against inadvertent reactivation.Use warning signs!

CAUTION! DANGER OF DAMAGE!Never operate the conveyor belt scraper for more than 14 minutes on the running and unloaded conveyor belt when it is fully ten-sioned. There is the risk of the conveyor belt scraper getting dam-aged and/or the conveyor belt getting damaged by overheating.Operate the conveyor belt scraper with full tension against the con-veyor belt only when it is running and fully loaded.

8. If the wear and tear or bulk material accumulation is excessiveor other problems occur, refer to the information in section 4.7“Installation checklist” or chapter 6 “Troubleshooting”.

5.4 Installations - Check-list

If the test run of the conveyor belt scraper was not as expected, thenthe “Installation checklist” table could help to find and solve the prob-lem. If there are still problems, refer to chapter 6 “Troubleshooting”:

The secondary cleaner should be installed on both sides accord-ing to the measurements in section 4.2 et seq.

The tip of the secondary cleaner scraper blade must touch the conveyor belt in an area between 51 and 102 mm after the verti-cal head drum centre line.

The secondary cleaner may not lift up the conveyor belt (see Fig. 20).

The scraper blades must be installed in the centre of the conveyor belt and/or head drum.

6 Maintenance

6.1 Safety instructions

6.2 Weekly maintenance

1. Switch off the power supply of the conveyor belt and any otherequipment and secure them against being switched on inadver-tently.

2. Remove all material deposits from the cleaner blade and themain axle.

3. Check that all securing parts are tightened. Tighten loose con-nections, if any.

4. Check the tension of the scraper and tighten it if necessary.5. If there are any signs of degrading operation, turn off the rele-

vant part of the equipment. To receive support, contact MartinEngineering or a representative. DO NOT operate the equip-ment until the reason for the problem is known and a solution isfound.

6. Check if the scraper blades are worn, damaged and parts miss-ing.

7. If the carbide inserts are worn, replace the blade according tothe instructions in section 6.2.

8. Clean all warning labels. Replace any warning labels that can-not be read. Warning labels can be obtained from Martin Engi-neering or an authorised dealer.

9. Remove all tools from the working area.10. Switch on the conveyor belt.

11. Monitor the scraper and test its cleaning performance.

2. Turn the threaded rod counter-clockwise to release the springtensioner.

1. Remove blade shaft.2. Loosen the bottom screwed connections of the respective

scraper blade (Fig. 27, 1-4) and remove.

3. Repeat step 2 for every other scraper blade to be replaced.4. Remove the scraper blade from the blade shaft.5. Place new scraper blade on the blade shaft.6. Fasten the scraper blade along with the blade shaft.7. Then reinstall the scraper.

7 Troubleshooting

7.1 Safety instructions

7.2 Troubleshooting

If, after the installation, there is an abnormally high wear and tear onthe cleaner blade and/or the cleaning efficiency is too low, check thefollowing points:

NOTEThe secondary cleaner is subject to many different types of bulkmaterials and is often used in extreme working and environmentalconditions. Therefore faults can occur in addition to those listedhere.In this case, Martin Engineering or a representative can help withthe positioning or customized solutions. Use the conveyor beltsystem only after the fault has been identified and rectified.

Symptom Cause Corrective action

High wear and tear on the cleaner blade.

The tension of the scraper against the conveyor belt is too tight.

Decrease the tension. Please refer to the appropriate operating instructions for the spring tensioner for the values of tension.

Inadequate cleaning efficiency or material accumulation.

The scraper is fixed either too loosely or too tightly on the conveyor belt.

Increase or decrease the tension accordingly.

The scraper blades are worn.

Check scraper blades and replace where necessary. (See “Weekly maintenance”).

Damage or unusual wear pattern on the scraper blade.

Damaged conveyor belt or joints.

Check the conveyor belt joint(s) and repair or replace if necessary.

Scraper is installed in the material flow.

Install primary cleaner in another position.

Different tension specifica-tions of the spring tensioner.

Check tension specifications and retighten if necessary.

Noises or vibrations. The scraper is fixed either too loosely or too tightly to the conveyor belt.

Adjust the tension if necessary.

Scraper blade not aligned at right angles to the conveyor belt.

Align scraper blade – see Fig. 13, page 22.

al 8 Storage, De-installation, Disposal

8.1 Storage

To maintain optimal functionality, Martin Engineering recommendsstoring the cleaners and the cleaner replacement blades made ofurethane or with rubber components at room temperature and pro-tected from direct sunlight.

Depending on the type of urethane and the storage conditions, stor-age of between 6 and 12 months or longer under unfavourable con-ditions can degrade the functionality of the cleaner or cleanerblades.

The best conditions for storage are at a temperature of +0°C to+30°C and 60% relative humidity.

8.2 De-installation

De-installation is the reverse of the installation (refer to section4.2.2., page 16).

8.3 Disposal

Assemblies and/or component parts of the Martin Engineering brushcleaner should be disposed of properly after use.

• Complete assemblies should be de-installed andseparated according to material and disposed of.

When disposing, all national and international waste disposal regu-lations have to be observed.
