The Arts

Visual Arts:

AVI 1O: Grade 9 (Visual Arts) - Open Prerequisite: None This course offers and overview of visual arts as a foundation for further study. Students will become familiar with the elements and principles of design and the expressive qualities of various materials through working with a range of materials, processes, techniques and styles. They will learn and use the method of analysis and criticism and will study the characteristics of particular historical art periods and a selection of Canadian art and the art of other countries. AVI 2O: Grade 10 (Visual Arts) - Open Prerequisite: None This course emphasizes learning through practice, building on what students know, and introducing them to new ideas, materials, and processes for artistic thinking and experimentation. Students learning will include the refined application of the elements and principles of design processes, and the relationship between form and content. Students will also learn about the connections between works of art and their historical contexts. Course objectives may be achieved either through a comprehensive program or through a program focused on a particular art form (e.g., drawing, painting). AV1 3M: Grade 11 (Visual Arts) - University/College Preparation Prerequisite: AVI 1O or AVI 2O: Grade 9 or 10 (Visual Arts) - Open This course provides students with opportunities to further develop their skills and knowledge in visual arts. Students will explore a range of subject matter through studio activities, and will consolidate their practical skills. students will also analyze art works and study aspects of Western art history, as well as Canadian art forms and art forms from various parts of the world. AVI 4M: Grade 12 (Visual Arts) - University/College Preparation Prerequisite: AVI 3M1: Grade 11 (Visual Arts) - University/College Preparation This course focuses on the refinement of students’ skills and knowledge in visual

arts. Students will analyze art forms, use theories of art in analyzing and producing art, and increase their understanding of stylistic changes in modern and contemporary Western art, Canadian (including Native Canadian) art and art forms from various parts of the world. Students will produce a body of work demonstrating a personal approach.

Photography:

AWQ 3M: Grade 11 (Photography: Digital and Traditional) - University/College Preparation Prerequisite: AVI 2O1: Grade 10 (Visual Arts) - Open This introductory photography course will focus on the development of skills and knowledge in the area of traditional and digital photography. Students will analyze photographic artworks and use theories of design in analyzing and producing photographs. Students will increase their understanding of stylistic changes in modern and contemporary photography. Students will produce a portfolio demonstrating a personal approach to photography. Creativity, visual aesthetics and an eye for detail are the foundations upon which this course is built. Throughout the course you will develop the skills and knowledge to produce photographs that demonstrate your ability to capture images that are thought provoking and beautiful. Both theory and practical skills will be explored to assist you in understanding the photographic industry and its impact on society. The projects produced throughout this course will be submitted to the McLuhan Multimedia Festival, scheduled for early May, as a venue for you to showcase your work to the community. Students enrolled in this course are encouraged to purchase their own digital or 35mm camera.

Students will analyze fashion art forms and produce fashion art of their own. There will be hands-on activities with readymade patterns as well as the opportunity to create their own patterns. We will look at the fashion industry worldwide and research current social issues of concern in the world of fashion.

Film/Video:

AWR 4M: Grade 12 (Film/Video) - University/College Preparation Prerequisite: AVI 3M: Grade 11 (Visual Arts) - University/College Preparation Recommended Prerequisite: AWQ 3M: Grade 11 (Photography) - University/College Preparation This course focuses on the refinement of the students’ skills and knowledge of filmmaking. Students will analyze cinematic art forms; use theories of filmmaking in analyzing and producing a movie; and increase their understanding of changes in modern and contemporary cinema from various parts of the world. Students will make a movie. This course emphasizes the development of the knowledge and skills required for the production of video and film related works. Students will develop an appreciation for the history of motion picture arts through analyzing specific works.

Business Studies

Introduction to Business:

BBI 2O: Grade 10 (Introduction to Business) - Open Prerequisite: None This course introduces students to the world of business. Students will develop an understanding of the functions of business, including accounting, marketing, information importance of ethics and social responsibility. This course builds a foundation for further studies in business and helps students develop the business knowledge and skills they will need in their everyday lives.

Accounting:

BAF 3M: Grade 11 (Financial Accounting Fundamentals) - University/College Preparation Prerequisite: None This course introduces students to the fundamental principles and procedures of accounting. Students will develop financial analysis and decision-making skills that will assist them in their future studies and/or career opportunities in business. Students will acquire an understanding of accounting for a service and a merchandising business, computerized accounting, financial analysis, and currently issues and ethics in accounting. BAI 3E: Grade 11 (Accounting Essentials) - Workplace Preparation Prerequisite: None

This course introduces students to the accounting cycle of a service business. Students will use computer application software to record business transactions and to prepare financial statements. Students will also investigate banking and cash management, decision-making, ethical behaviour, and career opportunities in the field of accounting. BAT 4M: Grade 12 (Financial Accounting Principals) - University/ College Preparation Prerequisite: BAF 3M: Grade 11 (Financial Accounting Fundamentals) - University/College Preparation This course introduces students to advanced accounting principles that will prepare them for post-secondary studies in business. Students will learn about financial statements for various forms of business ownership and how those statements are interpreted in making business decisions. This course further develops accounting methods for assets and introduces accounting for partnerships, corporations, and sources of financing. BAN 4E: Accounting for a Small Business Prerequisite: Accounting Essentials, Grade 11, Workplace Preparation This course further develops students' understanding of the fundamentals of accounting by having them examine each component of the accounting cycle, with an emphasis on the merchandising business. Students will use computer application software to learn how accounting is practiced in the workplace. Students will acquire an understanding of payroll systems, inventory, specialized journals, subsidiary ledgers, income tax reporting, and budgeting.

Entrepreneurial Studies:

BDI 3C: Grade 11 (The Venture) - College Preparation Prerequisite: None This course focuses on ways in which entrepreneurs recognize opportunities, generate ideas, and organize resources to plan successful ventures that enable them to archive their goals. Students will create a venture plan for a student-run, school-based, or summer business. Through hands on experiences, students will have opportunities to develop the values, traits, and skills most often associated with successful entrepreneurs. BDV 4C: Grade 12 (Entrepreneurship: Venture Planning in an Electronic Age) - College Preparation Prerequisite: None

This course provides students with the opportunity to develop and apply entrepreneurial skills through the creation of a venture plan that capitalizes on the potential e-commerce. Students will research and identify an opportunity for a venture. They will then complete the components of a venture plan that includes a website.

Information Technology:

BTA 3O: Grade 11 (Information and Communication Technology: The Digital Environment) - Open Prerequisite: None This course prepares students for the digital environment. Using a hands on approach, students will further development information and communication technology skills through the use of common business software application. The concept and operation of e-business will be explored, and students will design and create an e-business website. The skills developed in this course will prepare students for success in the workplace and/or post secondary studies.

Classical Studies

LVV 4U: Grade 12 (Classical Civilizations) - University Preparation Prerequisite: ENG 2D or ENG 2P: Grade 10 (English) - Academic or Applied This course allows students to explore the beliefs and achievements of the classical world, which have shaped Western thought and civilization. Students will investigated such aspects of classical culture as its mythology, art, literature and philosophy, as well as elements of ancient Green and Latin, through a variety of activities such as dramatizations, audio-visual presentations and discussions. By reading classical authors in English and examining archaeological evidence, student will enhance both their communication skills and their ability to think critically and creatively.

LVL AD: Grade 11 (Latin) – Academic Prerequisite: None This course introduces students to the achievements of the classical world through the study of Latin. Students will learn vocabulary and grammar essential for reading and translating classical texts. English is the language of instruction. Through a variety of enrichment activities, such as presentations, debates and dialogues, students will explore such aspects of life in the ancient world as trade, commerce, education, entertainment and social customs, while improving their language skills.

Students will study plays, short stories and newspaper and magazine articles, and will describe and create media works. An important focus will be the correct use of spoken and written language.

ENG 2D: Grade 10 (English) - Academic Prerequisite: ENG 1D or ENG 1P: Grade 9 (English) - Academic or Applied This course extends the range of analytic, reading, writing, oral communication and thinking skills that students need for success in secondary school academic programs. Students will study and interpret challenging texts from contemporary and historical periods, including novels, poems, plays and opinion pieces, and will analyze and create effective media works.
