Brisbane Maroons remain unbeaten as they overcome stiff opposition from Wollongong Miners--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Wollongong,NSW- The Brisbane Maroons shone in the Eastern Monday sunshine but they did not have things all their own way. "They were tough as nails. They never stopped coming but credit to our blokes. We are a good team and we matched them in intensity" said Robbie Vaivai after the game. Vaivai was the difference. He was Quarterback and Running Back all rolled into one. His passing game was accurate and his decision making immaculate. And when teams thought they had him pegged in the passing game, his legs did a lot more talking.

The Maroons started well and pounded the Miners up the middle with the run. He then found slot receiver Robert Woods in the corner with a lovely touch pass over the heads of the likes of Danny Whittle for the opening score. It got even better in the 2nd quarter when after a series a strong runs Vaivai went play action. Buddy Goodwin blew Whittle off at the line and he was gone. Vaivai hit him in stride for the 51 yard score against one of the best defenders in the League.

There was a huge crowd that was waiting for the home side to respond and they did with Josh Boyce on the end of a 19 yard pass from Jordan Wallace. Initially the call on the field was incomplete but after a review Boyce was adjudged to have made the catch and the Miners were under way.

Wallace was playing his first game with the Miners and acquitted himself very well. He added spark and ran the offense with poise and confidence. This was not shone better than when he quickly guided his team down the field before the half for a 33 yard field goal to Stirling Williams.

At 14-10 it seemed the Maroons were under pressure but they responded in the best possible way. A 9 play drive which highlighted some great passes from Vaivai ended with Matthew Wayne-Smith crossing over after catching a swing pass out of the back field. But momentum began to swing when Cade Joass missed a field goal and then Vaivai was intercepted by Roy Wiliams. Wollongong capitalised and Wallace was good enough to find Anthony Gonzales down the left where he broke a tackle before crossing over.

But the big players step up when needed and again it was Vaivai who controlled play and delivered the Maroons a 13 play drive that consumed over 6 minutes. This time Joass was good with the 44 yard field goal. This still left the Miners with time and just a touchdown needed but Wallace was intercepted as he tried to force the ball down the field.
