The instructions in this shaded sectionapply to the 70PSS only. The rest of thismanual applies to all models.

How to Assemble the 70PSSThe 70PSS was shipped “taken-down” intwo parts. The stock, action and maga-zine comprise one part, the barrel theother (See 1).Match the flat surface on the rear (chamber)end of the barrel with the flat surface in thefront end of the receiver, and insert the barrelinto the receiver as far as it will go. (See 2).Turn the knurled takedown nut clockwisewith your fingers until tight. If you are goingto shoot extensively, tighten the nutsecurely with the spanner wrench (provid-ed), or a coin (See 3).•WARNING: Check the takedown nut fre-quently to be sure it remains tight. If itloosens, the rifle may not fire.

To disassemble the 70PSS for reinsertioninto its case, reverse the above instructions.

Transportation and StorageInstructions for the 70PSS

If your 70PSS will be subjected to roughhandling while in its case, we recommendthat you use the foam insert provided, formaximum protection.

Do not store the 70PSS in its case for longperiods of time, since moisture can betrapped and condense inside, causing rustor corrosion. For long term storage, itshould be lightly oiled and kept in a dry, ventilated area, under lock and key.

Before You Use This FirearmIt is very important that you read andunderstand this manual before using yourfirearm. Warnings should be read andheeded carefully. Also follow “Marlin'sGuide to Gun Safety”, in this manual.

•WARNING: Marlin firearms are designedand manufactured to handle standardfactory-loaded ammunition which con-forms to SAAMI (Sporting Arms andAmmunition Manufacturers’ Institute Inc.)standards with dependability and safety.Due to the many bullet and load optionsavailable, the element of judgementinvolved, the skill required, and the factthat serious injuries have resulted fromdangerous handloads, Marlin does notmake any recommendations with regardto handloaded ammunition.

•WARNING: It is a violation of federal lawto alter or deface the serial number ofany firearm.

•WARNING: Your rifle was shipped com-pletely assembled (except the 70PSS)and should not be used or disassembledwithout fully reading and understandingthe instructions in this Owner's Manual.

How to Operate the Safety•WARNING: Prior to firing, know andunderstand the operation of the safetyby practicing with the rifle unloaded.

The safety mechanism is a round buttonlocated behind the trigger. To put your rifleon SAFE, hold it in the normal shooting posi-tion, pointed in a safe direction, and pushthe safety button from left to right as far as itwill go. The safety is now on SAFE (See A).

To move the safety to the FIRE position, push the safety button from right to left asfar as it will go. A red ring around the safe-

ty button will be visible when the safety isin the FIRE position (See B). If the maga-zine is in place and the bolt is forward andthe trigger is pulled with the safety in thisposition, the gun will fire.

NOTE: This rifle is equipped with a maga-zine disconnector. It will not fire if the maga-zine is not in place. Do not, however, usethe magazine disconnector as the primarysafety and never as a reason for unsafefirearm handling.

•WARNING: Never disassemble the safety. It has been correctly designed, fitted andtested, and is not reversible. Any mechani-cal device can fail, however, so never relyon the safety to justify careless handling.Never use a firearm with a safety that doesnot function properly. (See instructions forfactory maintenance in this manual.)

How to Load•WARNING: Never attempt to load yourrifle with ammunition that does not meetthe cartridge designation stamped on thebarrel. Use only clean, dry, factory-loaded ammunition which conforms toindustry standards.

Rifles chambered for 22 L.R. ammunition:•WARNING: Your rifle is a self-loading .22caliber designed for .22 Long Rifle High

Velocity cartridges only (not Hyper-Velocity); it will not function with Shorts,Longs or Shot cartridges, and damage orinjury may result from their use.

NOTE: Our testing has shown that thefollowing types of 22 L.R. ammunitionproduce the most consistent functioningand the best accuracy in our self-loading22 rifles:• CCI Mini-Mag• CCI Mini-Mag Hollow Point• Federal Classic High Velocity• Remington High Velocity

(Not Thunderbolt)• Winchester Super X High Velocity

Rifles chambered for 17 Mach 2 ammunition:Any commercially available 17 Mach 2ammunition will function in your rifle.

•WARNING: Before loading your rifle, always check the bore and chamber tobe sure they are free of grease, oil orany other obstruction.

•WARNING: Your self-loading rifle is notdesigned to be single-loaded and ITWILL NOT FIRE unless the magazine islocked in place. Always load cartridgesthrough the magazine as directed. Neveruse the magazine disconnector as theprimary safety or as an excuse forunsafe firearm handling.

1. Place safety on “SAFE”.2. Depress the magazine release latch(See C) and remove the magazine fromthe rifle. 3. Pull bolt charging handle back and hold.4. Push the bolt control lever up to the

“OPEN” position as indicated on the trig-ger guard (See G).5. Insert up to 10 cartridges (7 for the70PSS) as shown in D. With the rifle point-ed in a safe direction, replace the loadedmagazine, being sure it locks in place.6. Keeping fingers away from the trigger, push the bolt control lever down to the“CLOSE” position as indicated on the trig-ger guard (See H).NOTE: Allow bolt to slam shut freely. Donot attempt to assist the closing of the boltwith your hand.

Cocked and Ready1. Your self-loading rifle is cocked for fir-ing as soon as the bolt is closed during theloading operation as described above.2. The rifle is ready to fire as soon as thesafety is pushed to the “FIRE” (off“SAFE”) position.

How to Fire1. Push the safety to the “FIRE” positionand, with the rifle pointed at the target, squeeze the trigger. Since your rifle isself-loading, it is ready to fire again aftereach shot.2. If you have not fired all cartridges inthe magazine at the target, be sure tomove the safety to the “SAFE” positionuntil you are ready to shoot again.

•WARNING: Because of its self-loadingaction, if the bolt of your rifle is completelyclosed, you must assume that it is cockedand loaded.

How to Unload•WARNING: Before you unload, be surethat the safety is on “SAFE” and the rifle ispointed in a safe direction. Also, keep yourfingers away from the muzzle of the rifle.

1. Depress the magazine release latchas shown in C and pull the magazine outof the rifle.

2. Pull the bolt to the rear and lock it inthe open position (see “Manual” BoltHold-Open Feature.)

3. Inspect the chamber and magazine well.

NOTE: If the bolt is in the closed position, pull the bolt charging handle back manu-ally to eject the cartridge left in the cham-ber (See F).

Bolt Hold-Open FeaturesAutomatic “Last Shot” Bolt Hold-Open Feature

This safety feature, as shown in F, is activat-ed when the last shot in the rifle has beenfired (i.e. when the magazine and chamber

are empty). The bolt will lock fully open. With the bolt in this position, you shouldvisually check to be sure that the chamberand clip magazine are empty (See E).

NOTE: The “automatic” bolt hold-open willnot function unless the empty magazine isstill in the rifle.

Manual Bolt Hold-Open Feature1. This feature enables you to lock theaction open with live rounds in the maga-zine or with the magazine out of the rifle.2. With the safety on “SAFE” and the riflepointed in a safe direction, pull the boltcharging handle all the way back and hold it.

3. Engage the lock by pushing the boltcontrol lever up and, while holding it up,release the bolt charging handle (See G).4. To close the bolt, push the bolt controllever down. (NOTE: If the magazine isloaded, this will chamber a round.) (See H)

What to do ifyour rifle fails to fire

Misfires If you have squeezed the trigger and noth-ing happens, remain in shooting position, pointing the gun in a safe direction. Countto 10, then unload the rifle completely.(See “How to Unload”).

Underpowered ShotA “squib” or underpowered shot, should notoccur if the ammunition is clean, dry, andfactory loaded. You can tell if a shot isunderpowered by the unusually low soundit makes.

•WARNING: Because the bullet may actu-ally still be in the barrel, you must unloadcompletely, (See “Manual” Bolt Hold-Open feature.) and determine, with acleaning rod, if there is an obstruction. Ifthere is, it should be removed by a quali-fied gunsmith. Otherwise, personal injuryor damage could result.

SightingYour rifle has been sighted-in and test-fired at the factory. Due to individualshooting characteristics, however, sightingshould be range verified.

NOTE: Since the Model 7000 wasdesigned for varmint hunters, who use tele-scopic sights almost exclusively, it wasmade with a receiver grooved for the appro-priate rings. If you would like to have opensights installed, see a competent gunsmith.

Vertical Correction (Elevation)

To raise the point of impact, raise therear sight, by moving the sight elevatorrearward. To lower the point of impact, lower the rear sight, by moving the sightelevator forward.

Horizontal Correction (Windage)

To move the point of impact to the left, tap the rear sight base to the left. Tomove the point of impact to the right, tapthe rear sight base to the right.

NOTE for the 70PSS: During assemblyor disassembly of the rifle, if the take-down nut moves the rear sight elevator, itwill change the point of impact.

Scope MountingYour rifle has a grooved receiver designedto handle tip-off-type 22 scope bases. They are made by Tasco, Weaver, andothers, and are available through yourlocal gun dealer. You may also orderdirectly from Marlin Gun Service. Call 1-800-544-8892 for more information.

How to Clean Your Rifle•WARNING: Never attempt to wipe downor clean a loaded firearm. Followinstructions under “How to Unload”before cleaning.

CAUTION: Before using any solvent orother gun cleaning product, read the labelcarefully to be sure it will not damage eitherthe finish, or any parts of this firearm.

NOTE for stainless steel models:Although stainless steel is corrosion-resistant, it can rust. If the rifle gets wet, dirty, or is subject to excessive han-dling, wipe down metal parts with oil ora rust-inhibitor.

Minor scratches can be “buffed out” ofstainless steel with a “Scotch-BriteTM VeryFine” pad, available in hardware andautomotive supply stores.

Cleaning the boreSince modern ammunition burns verycleanly, with normal use it is not necessaryto clean the bore of your rifle. However, if itgets wet, or if any foreign material getsinto the action or barrel, cleaning asdescribed below is recommended.

With the safety on SAFE, remove themagazine and clear the action severaltimes to be doubly sure no cartridgesremain. Pull the charging handle back andlock the action open.

To clean the bore and barrel, use anystandard .22 caliber commercial cleaningrod and cleaning patches. Clean the barrelwith powder solvent and wipe lightly withgun oil after cleaning.

Cleaning the actionWe recommend that you wear safetyglasses while disassembling this rifle.

We recommend cleaning the inside of thereceiver, bolt face, extractors, and breechend of the barrel (around the chamber)

after firing each 250 rounds. (Frequency ofcleaning may depend on brand of ammu-nition used.) A toothbrush and commercialgun cleaning solvent will simplify the job.(Be sure to follow manufacturer of guncleaner’s directions, as some chemicalsmay damage the synthetic trigger guard.)

The steps listed below should be followedcarefully to assure proper disassembly, cleaning and reassembly.

Step #1 — With the safety on SAFE,remove the magazine and clear the

action several times to be sure the cham-ber is empty. Close the bolt (See H).

Step #2 — Unscrew takedown screws Aand B as shown in I. (For the 70PSS, oneend of the spanner wrench is a screw dri-ver.) Remove the trigger guard assembly.Separate the rifle into two segments, thestock and the barreled action.

Release assembly post by squeezing andpushing in slotted end. Pull post free of

action. (See J). Remove action by sliding itto the rear and up (See K).

Step #3 — With the action removed, thebolt, charging handle, recoil spring andspring guide may now be removed.

•WARNING: Recoil spring is compressedat this point and, if not handled properly, can fly from the receiver.

Pull the charging handle back slightlyand, with the forefinger of your otherhand, lift the muzzle end of the bolt fromthe receiver (See L).

As you begin to lift the bolt out, the charg-ing handle will become free and can beremoved. The recoil spring and springguide are now within easy reach forremoval (See M).

Step #4 — The barrel, receiver and actionare now ready for thorough cleaning. Theaction should be cleaned in solvent, dried, and oiled sparingly prior to reassembly.

Further disassembly of the action is not rec-ommended and should only be attemptedby a qualified gunsmith or the factory.

Step #5 — (Reassembly is easier if gun issecured in a padded vise, or held by anassistant.) To reassemble, place recoilspring guide into one end of the recoil

spring, then place opposite end of springinto breech bolt. Next, put recoil springguide into hole at the rear of the receiver. To prevent kinking the spring, hold breechbolt and recoil spring in one hand and usethe other hand to support the spring asshown in N, while compressing spring untilguide enters breech bolt.

Step #6 — The charging handle can nowbe positioned through the ejection port. Tocomplete the insertion of the breech bolt,be sure the charging handle fits into theslot provided for it in the bolt.

Reinstall the action by pulling the charginghandle all the way back and locking it inthe open position, and reversing the actiondisassembly procedure (See O).

When reassembling the barreled actionand stock, be sure the receiver is seated

as far back in the stock as it will go whiletightening the takedown screw. Otherwise, the rifle may not fire.

Reinstall the trigger guard assembly andtighten takedown screws.

When reassembling the barreled action tothe stock, take care not to bend or damagethe magazine release lever as you insert itthrough the slot in the trigger guard.

•WARNING: Never attempt to wipe downor clean a loaded rifle.

For the 70PSS, if you intend to use yourrifle after cleaning, replace the barrel asdescribed in “How to Assemble the70PSS.”

Use a very thin coat of light oil during belowfreezing conditions. Condensation dropletswill form soon after the rifle is brought into awarm room, or it may become wet duringinclement weather. In any case, all moistureshould be removed. Exterior metal finishesmay be wiped down with a slightly oiledcloth. For long term storage, lightly oil thebore, barrel and action with gun oil. Yourrifle should be completely unloaded andstored in a dry area. Never store your rifle ina carrying case.
