NORTH CHARLESTON, SCNorth Charleston, the 3rd largest city in South Carolina, is highly accessible and centralized among the region. This City, also known as the “Hub of the Lowcountry”, continues to grow at an extraordinary rate. It is important to note that North Charleston has led the State in retail sales for 21 consecutive years.

The City of North Charleston continues to drive the State’s economy as the epicenter of business development, offering a business friendly community, rich with incentives to allow companies to compete on a global scale. Its young, highly skilled workforce attracts diverse industries, such as aerospace, automotive, aviation, bioscience, defense, renewable energy, financial services, and information technology. The Charleston lifestyle has been discovered, with a steady stream of newcomers boosting the region’s population to more than 725,000. Charleston now teems with college-educated young people, 20- and 30-somethings who have come for the jobs and stayed for the lifestyle as reported by USA Today. Many of these new residents are highly educated and seeking employment. Many others bring with them thriving businesses of their own. All add to the unique flavor and energy of this historic coastal city.

In 2009, Boeing needed to establish a second final assembly line for its 787 Dreamliner as orders for the plane increased. The company needed a place with top-notch infrastructure, a business-friendly climate and a skilled workforce. With those things in mind, Boeing chose South Carolina for the project in November of that year. In making the announcement, Boeing committed to invest hundreds of millions of dollars and create upwards of 4,000 new jobs at the facility. In addition to aviation, Charleston is becoming a prime location for information technology jobs and corporations and has experienced

the highest growth in this sector between 2011 and 2012 due in large part to the Charleston Digital Corridor. In 2013, the Milken Institute ranked the region the ninth best performing economy in the US due in large part to the growing IT sector. Notable companies include Blackbaud, SPARC, BoomTown,CSS and Benefitfocus.

In 2013, Conde Nast Traveler wrote of the city, Is it the cobblestone streets? The colorful, historic row homes? The fantastic food? Whatever it is, Charleston’s got everyone thoroughly charmed once again. For the third consecutive year, Charleston’s been voted the No. 1 city in the United States in our Readers’ Choice Awards

(in which nearly 80,000 of you voted). It doesn’t end there: Charleston also clocks in at No. 5 on our list of Best Cities in the World (last year it topped the list at No. 1).

Higher education is also an important sector in the local economy, with institutions such as the Medical University of South Carolina, College of Charleston, The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, and Charleston School of Law. Charleston is also an important art destination, named a top 25 arts destination by AmericanStyle magazine.

North Charleston is in close proximity to major roadways, including I-26, I-526, and I-95, rail lines transporting both freight and passengers, and an international airport. The Port of Charleston, owned and operated by the South Carolina Ports Authority, is one of the largest ports in the U.S. Despite occasional labor disputes, the port is ranked number one in customer satisfaction across North America by supply chain executives.
