Introduction

The largest and deepest ocean of the earth

Occupying half of the earth’s sea surface and more than a third of the Earth’s surface.

Geography of Pacific Ocean

The Pacific Ocean stretches from Antarctica’s Ross Sea to the Bering Sea off Alaska.

Its widest position occurs at about 5°N latitude where it reaches from the coast of Columbia on the east to the Malay Peninsula on the west.

To the south it joins the Atlantic via the Drake Passage and Strait of Magellan between South America and Antarctica.

To the north, the Pacific Ocean is connected to the Atlantic through the Bering Strait at the Arctic Ocean.

Maritime Security

Maritime security is a buzzword in “political geography of water”.

“A process of maintaining stability in the international system on, over, under and from the sea”.

Oceans and the Law of the Sea provides seven threats considering maritime security as follow:

Piracy and armed robbery Terrorist acts The illicit trafficking in arms and weapons of mass

destruction The illicit trafficking in narcotics Smuggling and trafficking of persons by sea Illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, and Intentional and unlawful damage to the marine

environment.

Maritime Security Challenges in Pacific Ocean

Pacific ocean has a number of security challenges including territorial disputes, piracy & robbery, jurisdictional disputes, smuggling, human trafficking, illegal fishing & other problems.

Territorial Disputes

Sakhalin island dispute between Russia and Japan.

Kuril island dispute between Russia and Japan.

Senkaku Island between Japan, China and Taiwan.

Scarborough Shoal between China and Philippines.

Other Security Challenges

Piracy and armed robbery Jurisdictional disputes Smuggling & human trafficking Illegal fishing and Environmental Issues.
