At the Mass, the Gospel reading was Mt. 5:13-16. This Gospel and the homily focussed “on being Salt of the Earth and Light of the World” and the words of Pope Francis I found energising and challenging. Jesus in the parable refers to the salt losing its usefulness. We fail to live as salt of the earth when we prefer to stay in the safety of a salt shaker – so to speak – just staying in our comfort zone and safe world – rather than fulfil our desny out in the world… which is to be the seasoning to those who face a bland existence; to serve as a preservave like the salt to keep the world from going bad… to preserve what is right and good and true. We lose our salness – so to speak – our disncveness as sons and daughters of God – when we simply blend in with the world… when we look and sound and act as everybody else. The other theme is “You are the light of the world.” Light is not threatened by darkness. There is no measure of darkness that can swallow up light. Darkness cannot quench light. In fact, the greater the darkness, the greater the power of a single source of light to show the way. “You are the light of the world,” Jesus said. So do not fear the darkness. Go conquer it. On the same theme, Pope Francis said: “I prefer a church which is bruised, hurng and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security.” When we perform charitable acons, we are beacons of the Light of Christ that has come into the world. We have a responsibility to let others see this light of Christ, and through this light find their way out of darkness and despair and into the way of love and fulfilment, the way of holiness. During the week, I received an email from a team leader of the One Meal project conducted by Our Lady of Fama Parish, Peakhurst highlighng how two of our students, Conner Fitzgerald and Max Black, are pung the Gospel into acon. These young men have volunteered to be part of the rostered meal service group that deliver to a marginalised populaon of Riverwood each Monday night. Congratulaons to Conner and Max! YEAR 7 2019 Wednesday 7 November we held our Year 7 2019 Parent Informaon Evening. This provided our new parents with informaon to help them with the transioning of their child into MCCP. FROM THE PRINCIPAL Last Friday evening, Ms Josilin Kalifa and I had the opportunity to attend the annual Marist Schools Australia Eucharist and Dinner. At the Mass, the Gospel reading was Mt. 5:13-16. This Gospel and the homily focussed “on being Salt of the Earth and Light of the World” and the words of Pope Francis I found energising and challenging.

Jesus in the parable refers to the salt losing its usefulness. We fail to live as salt of the earth when we prefer to stay in the safety of a salt shaker – so to speak – just staying in our comfort zone and safe world – rather than fulfil our destiny out in the world… which is to be the seasoning to those who face a bland existence; to serve as a preservative like the salt to keep the world from going bad… to preserve what is right and good and true.

We lose our saltiness – so to speak – our distinctiveness as sons and daughters of God – when we simply blend in with the world… when we look and sound and act as everybody else.

On the same theme, Pope Francis said: “I prefer a church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security.”

When we perform charitable actions, we are beacons of the Light of Christ that has come into the world. We have a responsibility to let others see this light of Christ, and through this light find their way out of darkness and despair and into the way of love and fulfilment, the way of holiness. During the week, I received an email from a team leader of the One Meal project conducted by Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Peakhurst highlighting how two of our students, Conner Fitzgerald and Max Black, are putting the Gospel into action. These young men have volunteered to be part of the rostered meal service group that deliver to a marginalised population of Riverwood each Monday night. Congratulations to Conner and Max!

YEAR 7 2019Wednesday 7 November we held our Year 7 2019 Parent Information Evening.

This provided our new parents with information to help them with the transitioning of their child into MCCP. We will be welcoming 197 new Year 7 students next year and look forward to seeing them next week at our Year 7 Orientation Day.

FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

Advent - preparing our hearts, to receive the gift of Jesus at ChristmasFor many years, families from Sydney Catholic Schools have donated tinned foods to Catholic Care at Christmas to help people facing poverty and hardship, and these have been gratefully received. This year, our school is working with Catholic Care to improve the nutritional value of these hampers. Thanks to some very generous support from Harris Farm Markets, Catholic Care has been able to source fresh fruit, vegetables and groceries to create an improved “Gift of Goodness” Christmas hamper.

As Christians, the Lord requires us “to do justice and to love goodness, and to walk humbly with our God.” (Micah 6:8). The Gift of Goodness Campaign is a powerful way to bring this to life in our community.

To raise funds for this campaign, Marist Catholic College Penshurst will be holding a mufti-day fundraiser next Friday, 16th November. Students are invited to bring in a $2 (or more) donation on this day and to wear smart casual attire. Please re-inforce with your son/daughter that their mufti attire should be appropriate and comply with our College standards. No midriff tops, short skirts/shorts, singlet tops or clothing with offensive slogans or words should be worn.

Girls Night In & Father/Son NightLast Friday evening we held our second Girls Night In evening where pink was the predominant colour and fun and laughs were in abundance, all while helping to raise awareness and money for the Cancer Council towards women’s cancers. A heartfelt thanks and congratulations to Mrs Nicole Katrib who organised this wonderful evening in recognition of such an important cause.

Our next special community event will be our Father/Son evening on Friday 23 November for boys and their fathers or significant male role models / mentors. We would love you and your son to take part in what promises to be a special evening. This night provides you with the opportunity to connect with your son/s and have fun together. The evening will commence at 4:30pm with fun activities and a BBQ. This will be followed with Jonny Shannon’s presentation at 6:30pm which involves both discussion groups and some ‘one-on-one’ conversation time with your son.

If you have yet to RSVP it is not too late! Please complete this form if you would like to attend.

CRICKET - DOWNY TROPHYFirst XI Cricket - Round 1 MCCP 5 / 290 def Revesby 10 / 106

Best Performances : Batting: J Sartor 103 ; J Cino 69 ; B Salameh 60 Bowling: P Brown 5 for 30 ; J Sartor 2 for 25

MCCP won the toss and elected to bat on a beautiful morning at Padstow Park. Our openers Joseph Cino and Michael Karahalias made a steady start against some tight bowling and solid fielding and we were able to score 39 runs in the first 10 overs with the loss of only one wicket. Some outstanding strokeplay from Joseph Sartor, Bill Salameh and Pat Brown combined with Joseph Cino holding up one end saw us compile an excellent score of 290 runs for the loss of 5 wickets at the end of our allocated 50 overs.

Our opening bowling attack combined with some excellent work in the field restricted Revesby’s scoring opportunities in the opening overs. This sustained pressure continued throughout their innings and Revesby was eventually dismissed for 106 runs. The outfielding from the Penshurst players at mid-wicket and long-on was certainly instrumental in the defence of our total. Pick of the bowlers was Pat Brown with 5 wickets for 30 runs.
