• The rain gauge is an instrument used to measure the amount of rainfall through the height of the deposited water.

Our rain gauge

Page 6: Marina di Carrara - meteo

• Material: very light fabric, wire, two rings, a broom, a stick.

Our windsock

Page 7: Marina di Carrara - meteo

The windLooking at the position of the windsock we can define if the wind is absent or, if present, if it is weak, medium or strong. From the direction that the windsock takes, with the help of a compass, we can determine the wind direction, that is the cardinal point from which it blows and notes are written in the table.

…and our wind rose

Our water barometer

Step1: water level is the same

Step2: Outside, the water level of the straw is down

Step3: near the radiator, the water level of the straw is up

In our little “WEATHER STATION”

we have the thermometer, the

hygrometer and the barometer

Finally we have the instruments and we can begin to collect

the observations and to record data

MATERIAL

Papers with universal indicatorDistilled waterRainwaterVinegarHydrochloric acidBicarbonateDishwashing liquid Saliva

We collected rain water in a clean jar and found the ph using papers with universal indicator. We then compared the colour of the paper that was submerged in rainwater with the one that the paper takes in distilled water.

Acid rain

Page 15: Marina di Carrara - meteo

We repeat with the vinegar, dilute hydrochloric acid, bicarbonate, dishwashing liquid, saliva.

Dishwashing liquid Yellow 7

Saliva Light green 6

We have different ph values. The more acidic substance is the hydrochloric acid, the less acidic one is the bicarbonate.

Could also it occur in Carrara?

What will happen to our old cathedral, completely covered with fine white marble from the quarries?

November begins with bad weather conditions. Heavy rains and landslides occur

in and around Carrara
