We are pleased to announce the following grants were approvedby the Board of Supervisors for the 2010-2011 fiscal year. Twelveprojects from non-profit organizations will receive grants thatdirectly benefit habitat, wildlife and fish populations in MarinCounty and also provide educational opportunities. Our part-nership with the Marin County Stormwater Pollution PreventionProgram continues as they provide additional funding for thesegrants.

This newsletter is anannual publicationof the Marin CountyFish and WildlifeCommission.

Volunteer membersare appointed by theBoard of Supervi-sors for three yearterms.

The Commissionserves to advise theBoard and adminis-ter the annual grantprogram.

North Bay Trout Unlimited

The North Bay Chapter of Trout Unlimited serves anglers andenvironmentally conscious friends in an ongoing effort tofulfill the mission of Trout Unlimited: "....to conserve andrestore North America's trout and salmon fisheries and theirwatersheds." The grant request is for a partnership effortbetween Samuel P. Taylor State Park and the organization tofence areas along the creeks in Devils Gulch to prevent erosionand protect salmon populations. Friends of Corte Madera Creek

This group of local citizens has joined together with a commoninterest in improving the Corte Madera Creek watershed in thecommunities of Fairfax, San Anselmo, Ross, Kentfield,Greenbrae, Larkspur, and much of Corte Madera. Activitiesinclude establishing a creek monitoring program for adults andschool children to identify problem areas, developing a water-shed plan, and advocating for the health of the creek. Tyee Foundation

The Tyee Foundation annually raises over50,000 salmon fingerlings in net pens inTiburon in the San Francisco Bay. Volun-teers feed and release the fish as smolts toleave for ocean migration and then returnto support sportfishing in Marin andSonoma. The grant request is for netrepairs. Mill Valley Streamkeepers

The Streamkeepers are an all volunteerorganization that began in 1998 workingto restore and protect Mill Valley's water-shed through educating the community.The grant request is for media productionof banners and signs. Informa-tion:www.millvalleystreamkeepers.org

Tomales Bay Association

This association monitors thehealth of the Tomales BayWatershed; holding confer-ences to disseminate informa-tion. The association co-sponsors artist DanMcCormick and the ArtistsIn the School Program ofGallery Route One in PointReyes Station. Studentsfrom West Marin Elemen-tary School constructvarious habitat restoration and protectiondevices along Olema Creek. The grantrequest is additional for straw, burlap, etc.to construct erosion control devices thatare placed along creekbanks. Point Reyes Seashore Association

This association is a partner with the Na-tional Park Service at Point Reyes NationalSeashore. Membership dues support a vari-ety of park programs. The association pro-vides a variety of educational field seminars,summer camp programs, and operates salesoutlets in park visitor centers that help fundvarious park programs. Tiburon Peninsula Foundation

The Tiburon Peninsula Foundation works topromote, facilitate, and enhance the

Marin Audubon Soci-ety

Marin Audubon Societywas established morethan 50 years ago to

protect the environment and is also a chapterof the National Audubon Society. MarinAudubon's educational activities focus onbirds and other wildlife as well as wildlifehabitats. The Society offers regularly sched-uled field trips to natural areas focused onbird identification, and monthly programson natural history topics. Salmon Protection AndWatershed Network (SPAWN)

SPAWN is working to protect endangeredsalmonids in the Lagunitas Watershed (WestMarin/San Geronimo Valley) through publiceducation, and habitat restoration projectsincluding a native plant nursery. The Bay Institute

The Bay Institute was founded in 1981 withthe mission of restoring and protecting theSan Francisco Bay Estuary to insure adequatehabitat for aquatic and terrestrial species ofthe region. The grant request is for suppliesfor creek restoration and plantings alongStemple and Walker Creeks through theSTRAW (Students and Teachers Restoring aWatershed) program. The Dance PalaceCommunity Center

The Community Center serves West Marin byproviding classes, meeting space, concerts,cultural events, afterschool programs as wellas a summer camp. Wildcare

Wildcare/Terwilliger Nature Education andWildlife Rehabilitation operate a wildliferehabilitation center for injured animals.

In addition, Terwilliger nature vans traveloff-site to dozens of schools throughoutthe area each year to provide hands onnature education. The grant request is foranimal exhibits and to construct andinstall 20 boxes for "The Hungry OwlProject." Information: (415) 453-1000

Marin County Fish and Wildlife Commission

The Fish and Wildlife Commission advises the Board of Supervisors on expenditures of fundsobtained through fines levied for fish and wildlife violations in Marin County and also fundsprovided by the Marin County Stormwater Pollution Prevention Program. The funds are desig-nated to enhance fish and wildlife resources in the county and for public education. Grantproposals submitted to the Commission Chair are reviewed during the first quarter of anycalendar year and recommended on a competitive basis and availability of funds. If approvedby the Board of Supervisors, funding becomes available by fall of the same year. The commis-sion can also provide letters of endorsement for projects seeking alternative sources of fund-ing. The commission sponsors an annual barbecue (September 16, 2010) for grantees andcommunity groups.
