In my exchange semester we investigated the emergence of a particular kind of urban building in Geneva between the 50‘s and 60‘s - the large object-like apartment blocks - and learning from the ideas inherent in them of social collectivism, individual privacy, relationship to landscape, repetitive facade treatments, and an atmosphere of relative luxury. In the studio in groups we designed new buildings located on a given site on the outskirts of the city centre.

With a heavy emphasis on the impact at the urban level and on detailed floor plans the building was created from interacting 1:500 massing studies with 1:25 and 1:100 floor plans. Our design idea was about connecting the apartments with the city centre and the hill on the opposite side of the river [lying to the left in this image]. We achieved this by creating a hard street reinforced edge on the one side and breaking the form down into four tower like fingers on the other. Continuing on from an existing building on the corner of the approaching intersection a series of courtyards flow between the forms and providing alternative foot access and connecting with an existing sports ground.

Conventional drawings, and models at various scales were made and remade through out the project. The class was set the presentation style down to the colour of the card and the method of construction. At the end of the project the class had produced a collective investigation into the large apartment typology. The project was very well received and the experience of working in the group was very effective and enjoyable. The German students had a lot to teach me about planning, European conventions and the focus on modeling and very conventional drawings was an interesting way of designing.

CONSIDERING DEPTH

New Zealand’s medium density housing needs to establish an excepted norm of how designs should regard public and private space. This thesis is ‘considering depth’ as a potential way of setting the tone of our cities future urban environments at a human level.

My thesis takes Kris Scheerlinck’s theoretical analysis of ‘depth configurations’ [the arrangement and effects of the spaces between the public and private realms] and tests it as guide for designing. The playful and experiential attitudes of Aldo van Eyck ground my proposed design of an apartment block in Newtown, Wellington by setting the tone of the relationship. This project has been created as to be an indicative precedent, taking a conventional site and designing various relationships of depth

Depth configurations, according to Scheerlinck, can be read at different scales. Along an access sequence into a single dwelling or through an entire city. In this same way they have been applied at different scales, from massing adjustments, as shown in the image to the right, through to experienced moments as in the previous render. Broken into three main contributing aspects, territorial boundaries, permeability and proximity, the design objective is to have all aspects present and contributing equally. This project has led on from my work in Geneva, where I have combined the theory through design objectives with a similar approach to large building design. Shifting through scales and setting and solving for circulation and continually regulating service cores and apartment types. So far the thesis has led to some really interesting design solutions, as the theory translates into design objectives and strategies rather than a prescriptive solutions as a designer there is freedom to be creative. The resulting problem solving task of designing for specific qualities and combinations, for example; generosity in a small space, while maintaining privacy and the hierarchy of paths, has been both enjoyable and rewarding.

Three programmes now occupy the building; primarily it will be an interactive I-site, with an iconic lookout tower andcinema room.

Complementing this is a bike hire and maintenance centre in the renovated basementsub-level and the existing Athenaeum Library remains.

We have updated the building while maintaining its integrity in a sympathetic manner whilst significantly integrating these new programmes.

Dunedin has an established history of tower making. We have embraced this idea to create a starting point toexplore Dunedin. Our design connects the two key cathedrals and promotes reuse and appreciation of heritage sites by creating a 28m public vantage point and information centre.

Our response is to introduce a unifying set of functions that will allow a better experience of the heritagestructure. By re-aligned the programmes so that they are complimentary with each other, they are able to share amenities and potential customers. We also emphasized the building’s history as an Athenaeum and take advantage of its location on the Octagon so the building will now contribute at a civic level.

A generous circulation spine is consolidated down the main axis of the building, making it easy to navigate. This spine links down to the basement level via a central internal stairway at the rear of the building and the existing stair at the front. All internal existing vertical circulation have been re-used. The advantage of a simplified circulation route creates seamless connections between programmes generating a positive heritage experience. The spine consolidates amenities such as bathrooms, but in doing so allows the public facilities to share patrons benefiting both parties.

‘HYDRO’ HUB - 2nd place

sannZ 24hr coMPetition 2013Wellingtons Future Transport 2030

Team members - Margot Bowen, Annabel Fraser & Luke Bryant

Tasked with designing an “innovative transport system for Wellington City in the year 2030. Without personal ‘motor cars’ and a re-branding of Wellington as a conscious city of the future. We took Wellington back to its choice of settlement with a hydro-charged system utilizing the natural sustainable resource from the harbour to serve the three main user groups and intersected them through this site as the hub of the system.

- tourists can come from the airport across the harbour- the visitors can then walk the water front thoroughfare- residents use the now centrally tied bus station

This system is designed around water fueled engines is designed for the public transport to be more convenient than private travel.Public transport systems have been divided into 3 zones, OUTEr INNEr and CBD Optimized for the different user groups residents, visitors and tourists. All directly leading through the main transport hydro hub. Primarily a bus based system the amount of lanes throughout the city will be phased out in favor of individual hydro modes, bikes and pedestrian walk ways.
