PACKAGING REDESIGN.Edinburgh Napier University. 2010. Commended in Roses Student Awards 2011.Redesign for boots vitamins. Based on the vitamin itself and typography to make it stand out on the shelf, and also easy to remember to take since it is nice to have out on the kitchen bench.

SPECIAL EDITION BOOKSEdinburgh Napier University 2012. Special edition books about three featured designers/writers for the Circle Magazine. Based on the Pentagram D&AD brief from 2012. Choose to make the books based on the line “Everything starts with a pencil”. The first page based on the last initial, in typography, and the whole thing opens as a concertina.

SPROUT CLOUT.Edinburgh Napier University. 2011. In this project the brief was to get Brussel Sprouts sold all year, not just at Christmas - and to make it cool. Since I think it is quite cool to protest in what we believe in, I felt that the sprouts should do the same. So the sprouts protested in the streets of Edinburgh, with some small signs explaining their needs as vegetables.

CITYGUIDE.OCAD U, Editorial 1, 2011. A city guide to Reykjavik. Group decided grid, size, typography and colours. My version is inspired by the shapes of the vibrant and different sceneries in the city of Reyk-javik. The photographs used are all in collaboration with the respected photographers.

THIS IS YOUR LIFE.Edinburgh Napier University. 2010. Data visualisation of my life. Showing how many layers I had on every day for a number of days. With a small warning text under the heading; as a comment on how some British people don’t know how to dress to keep warm. Made one print version, and one piece made of real wool and cotton threads.

keeping warmthats my life

WARNING! Keeping warm when outside in cold weather is crucial; if you don’t take enough layers on in the cold weather you may experience cold feet and hands, red nose, bad concentration and pain. Over long periods of wearing too few layers of clothes on you may experience cough, flu and chestpain. If always wear too few layers you may suffer serious illness and death.

CORPORATE IDENTITY. ETHICAL.Edinburgh Napier University. 2009. An ethical assignment where we were asked to make a company doing something good for the environment. EcoSAFE is a furniture environment mark. The idea is that ecosSAFE ‘scratches the veneer’ so you can be sure that the furniture you are buying is environmental friendly. They also collaborate with IKEA as an example(next page).

PACKAGE A PERSON.OCAD U. Packaging design 1. 2011. A chocolate packaging where the pattern is inspired by the personality of Bowie, a girl in my class, her hobbies and what she likes to do in her life. It is a healthy choco-late since Bowie is a healthy girl. She also likes sharing and therefore the chocolate is shareable because you can split it in two.

LOGO. GUARDINQ.Edinburgh Napier University. 2011. Live logo project for Inquisitive Systems. Runner up. Since they work with security I used the owl as a symbol, because it resembles knowledge and safety. Choose to use purple because it symbolizes good judgement and it is warm.

CHILDRENS BOOK.Edinburgh Napier University. Illustration. 2010. The children’s book was made after an assignment in Illustration. My story was about ‘The little bird who was afraid of heights’, which is about that we sometimes need to face our fears.

LYRIC POSTERS.OCAD U. Expressive Typography. 2011. Lyric posters made with handmade type. Expressing the song ‘I’d rather be with you’ by Joshua Radin. It reminded me of a love letter that is scribbled down(coloured post-ers) or like a feeling someone is hiding from the person it is about(black poster).

BOOKCOVER.OCAD U. Expressive Typography. 2011. Typebased bookcover for the book “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” by Stieg Larsson. With this hand drawn typeface I have tried to resemble a scene in the book where the main character force a tattoo on a mans skin. It is frightening and provoking just like the book.

EXPERIENCE STOCKBRIDGE.Edinburgh Napier University. Illustration. 2010. After investigating Stockbridge in Edinburgh, I illustrated these posters/postcards with mixed media. They were also exhibited in ‘The Maverik Showroom¨’ for the ‘North-ern Light’ exhibition for Norwegian design and art students in 2010.

MAJOR PROJECT For the major project I choose to make graphics with the theme disasters which is called ‘Life, Interrupted’. It explores different disasters. In a calm, white and provoking way, it lets you experience them as well. The project consists of several research pieces, all rounded up with three posters and a book.

The first part of the Major Project is the three posters. They explain time lines of the emotions and reactions that happens in a disaster with embossed type. The covered disasters, from left to right, are Hurricane Katrina, the earthquake in Haiti and the Japan Tsunami (Tohoku). On the bottom of the posters are a chaotic ocean of 3D type, presenting the chaos that rules in the start of a disaster.

Page 19: Maren Gyllenhammar Raaum Portfolio

The second part is the book ‘Silence, thereafter’. Inside there are stories from parents of the teens and children who died at Utøya, Aberfan and Dunblane, and also some missing children. The book tries to capture the essence of what is left after a person dies, and how many trivial fragments change meanings. Every other page is embossed as shadows of their lives. Under is a little museum of fragments of the children’s belongings captured in ice, and frozen in time. The children are never going to change, get older, or move or use their belongings. But the fragments are there, the space is there, the smell has started to go away and so does the memories, but the parents hold on to some things, and this is a tribute to them.

Page 20: Maren Gyllenhammar Raaum Portfolio

On the start of the Major Project process I explored the Titanic disaster. Because of the lack of identity papers, lots of the dead and found ones were identified by small belongings. I gathered all this information and made three posters, one for a man, one for a woman and the last one for a small girl. The resin boxes are small ice cubes of their belongings frozen in time. The posters stand as a reminder of all the people who died that day.
