Mascali is a city that was destroyed during the 1928 Etna eruption which covered with lava almost its entire geographical territory and also its cultural dynamics and historical memory. The city was rebuild from the foundation but people never really got used to new arrangement which, moreover, misses some important services. The project aims to recreate a “center” in which inhabitans may find a new identity again starting from the lava itself spreading long colored lines and giving a sense of rebirth and awakening people curiosity and need for interaction with their own city. The new center comprehends various function such as sport, a street market, a drive-in and a interactive square fully customizable by people, depending on their needs, with wooden poles.

the boundarycontest for cemetery extension

year 2014place Campi Bisenzio (FI), Tuscany, Italywith Sara Altamore, Ludovico Palmeri

The project is defined by a unique element that is at the same time border, path and skeleton. The material of the spiral path is treated wood and the whole surface is made of independent boards for easier assembly and maintenance. The spiral path acts as an ordering element of the successive phases of construction. There was the queries of immediate accessibility together with the need of temporalizing the construction, which suggested, for some elements, two phases during their lives, starting with hosting art exhibitions.

The south facade of the main building is made of wood, it overlooks the city and symbolizes the transience of earthly life. The north one overlooks the cemetery, and it’s made of stone which gives the sense of monumentality and austerity.Eight chapels were located in four areas of the new cemetery.

stationrailway station redesign

year 2012place Catania, Sicily, Italywith R. Cardillo, P. Floramo, A. Galeano, C. Lentini, L. Palmeri, G. Vassalloteacher Prof. S. D’Urso

In a more complex idea of rethinking the waterfront of the city, the project analyzes a possible different railway station. In Catania, the station has always been a cut between the sea and the built city because of the fact that it is plain air and there are places where in no way one can reach the shore. The project wants to build a “bridge” with whom inhabitants could easily overtake the railway without even notice they are there. To add value to the idea are provided a wide range of services for people: a mediateca, a spa, a cafè and a disco.

restorationex-convent of s.giuliano

year 2012place Catania, Sicily, Italywith Sara Altamore, Angela Galeano, Ludovico Palmeriteacher Prof. A. Salemi

After an accurate field survey which accounted for geometrical, technological and construction aspect, we concluded that degradation of the convent was mainly due to bad maintenance. Our project aims to restore the original conditions through the idea of a minimum intervention.Local typical materials were used to keep functional the building and the use of magnetic field was provided to remove the damp from degraded masonry.

sofroniaBook-insPired square redisign

year 2011place Catania, Sicily, Italywith S. Calì, R. Cardillo, P. Floramo, L. Palmeriteacher Prof. S. D’Urso

Catania is a city that misses a modern unique urban plan. The old one was developed in 60s on XX century and answered different needs from our.All public space such as gardens and squares need a lot of maintenance and they should better be redesigned for the new city. The idea behind the project is to borrow one of the Calvino’s “invisible cities” to give a solid backgroung to a new space. We chose Sofronia, the city made up of two parts: one stable, the other temporary; the former frail, the latter heavy. It’s just like a normal city, only contrariwise.

open/closed housesingle family house

year 2010place Catania, Sicily, Italyteacher Prof. S. D’Urso

During this exercise we were asked to design a house around some hypothetical users with their typical needs. In particular were taken in account the orientation, the landscape, the energetic balance and the flexibility of the house. This ascpect was studied in plan and in elevation for a complete customizable solution that might have been adapted to a huge series of needs.

Visitor centeran entry to the Park

year 2010place Catania, Sicily, Italywith Carmelo Caruso, Angela Galeano, Ludovico Palmeriteacher Prof. A. M. Atripaldi

Gioeni Park is located in the north of Catania. It has been build up beginning in the 70s and finalized in 90s. It still misses an adequate entrance and this was the aim of this project: to give a way in to those (tourists or local people) who want to visit or use the park. The project represents a door symbolized by a trilith. It contains the ticket office, a cafè, a library and a temporary exposition along an alternative path bringing the visitor into the park through the art.

plastic Modelsuniversity Project

year 2010place Catania, Sicily, Italysupervisor Prof. S. Calvagna

During my studies I was asked to produce varius kind of architectures. In some cases I like to experiment and produce my own ideas building scaled models that represent an easy way to understand, for example, how shadows and light relates each other. These are two examples of them: the first is a study for an exposition pavilion, the other is an experiment about modular roofing for urban design easy to dismantle.
