During our Wednesday Lenten Studies, Gethsemane will do a group study of
“Unbinding Your Heart.” We will discuss and share our faith, why it is
important to share it, and why we sometimes are apprehensive to do it.
This is a very powerful study that will challenge you, deepen your faith,
improve your prayer life and deepen your relationship with others.
At the table in the narthex
• Order your book for the Lenten Study
• Sign up to bring soup or bread
• Sign up to set up or clean up
• Pick up your Lenten Devotion Book for at home
Please note the change in time for worship. This year worship begins at
8:00pm, except for Ash Wednesday when worship begins at 7:00pm.
YOU ARE ENCOURAGED TO INVITE OTHER PEOPLE TO THE STUDY!

Lenten Discipline by Pastor June Wilkins
In the first centuries of the Christian Church, Lent was
a time of preparation for those who wanted to be
baptized. The days leading up to Holy Week and
Easter were chosen, with the baptisms happening at
the Easter Vigil on the Saturday night of Easter. Those
preparing for baptism would be acknowledged by the
congregation and they would enter into a 40-day time
of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Today, our 40-day
Lenten disciplines are to help those of us who are
already baptized to re-focus and re-orient our lives to
God.
I would like to invite you to invest some time this year
in your Lenten discipline by attending the Wednesday
night Lenten soup suppers, discussion and worship.
The class this year will be Unbinding Your Heart, 40
days of prayer and faith sharing. On Ash Wednesday,
March 5th, your group leader will give you your book
and our first discussion will begin on March 12th. In
the study we will discuss our faith, why it’s important
to talk about it with others, and why we’re sometimes
hesitant to do so. There is also a 40-day prayer journal
that will lead you, each day, to reflect and pray on a
specific aspect of your faith.
This is a study on sharing our faith with others – better
known as Evangelism. Evangelism has gotten a bad
reputation. The author admits that most people would
rather opt for gall bladder surgery than talk about
Evangelism! But sharing our faith with others is one of
our calls and it can even be a joyful and inspiring
thing.
The people who first took this study in order to lead it
came in with much the same resistance to Evangelism.
This study though, is not about knocking on doors,
coercing people to come to church, or any other
generalities that we think about when we hear
“evangelism”. Rather, it was about deepening our
existing faith and being able to articulate it to other
church members, family and friends.
The leaders of the groups are Howard Feole, Nancy
Feole, Barbara Ford, Judy Kulikowski, Carol Prigan,
Scott Prigan, Gary Radar, Dick Reuning, Judy Reuning
and Sharon Walton. If you would like to, speak with
any of them about this study.
I hope that you will consider making the Wednesday
night class part of your Lenten discipline this year.
Pr. June

A blessing?
When I recently told the story of Jesus Blesses the
Children (Mark 10: 13-16 and other gospels) to our
Play and Learn chapel children, I got an inquisitive look
on several faces. A blessing? What’s that?
Jesus took the children in his arms and blessed them.
We can imagine him saying “God loves you just the
way you are and so do I”. This is after the disciples, in
their well-meaning way, told the parents that Jesus
was too busy for the children.
A blessing . . . what a wonderful way to begin or end a
child’s day. Bless them as they hurry out the door for
school. Bless them as they lay down their head to
sleep. Make the sign of the cross on their forehead.
Say “You are a child of God. God loves you and so do
I”. Create your own blessing specific to your child and
the circumstances of the day. Doesn’t need to be long
or fancy . . . just a few words from your heart. It may
make a change in the day for them, probably you, too!
Another thought – stick a blessing note in your child’s
lunch box or book bag. Bless them and their day.
Blessings to all of us – we all are children of God!

Worship Projection Committee:
The Worship Projection Committee continues to meet
to address the issues before us. First, of course, is the
question of how to conform the chancel area to the
requirements for projection in a way which also is
mindful of the varying preferences of the congre-
gation. We are making progress but still aren’t there
yet. However, once a solution is reached, carefully
priced and approved by Council, we will certainly
share it with all of you.
A good note to
report is that we
now have about
$16,000 in the
Projection Fund
although we
have not as yet
pushed hard for
donations. But
don’t let that
hold you back.
Please consider supporting this effort with a
contribution. You can place your check in the offering
plate with “Projection Fund” clearly noted on the
memo line.
We are also beginning our search for Projectionists.
We hope to assemble and train a small group of
committed individuals who aren’t afraid of technology
and can stay alert for the entire service. If you are
over the age of 14, you could qualify. If interested,
please talk to Paul Siebert, Mike Siddall or Jim Sauer.
And finally, we are committed to continuing with the
occasional, perhaps monthly, use of projection in our
worship services. We also continue to invite your
input and comments.

Property Management: Access Codes
In recent months, several members have notified the
church office that they have lost or misplaced cell
phones, purses, etc, which contained, among other
things, their security access code for entry to the
church. While we are sorry for their loss, we are also
very grateful that they thought to notify the office.
Remember, these codes are as good as a key, enabling
the bearer to gain access to the church. So as a
reminder, treat these codes as you would the key to
your own home. If you are keeping the number in
your purse or wallet, don’t put Gethsemane’s name
on the same piece of paper. And if for some reason
you lose them, please call us and let us know. We can
always cancel your old code and issue you a new one.
Thank you for your care and your help in maintaining
the security of our building.

Gethsemane Stewardship Team
Come and join a conversation about discipleship.
Everything we have comes from God. REALLY? What
does discipleship look like? How is it different from
membership in our congregation? What is a steward
anyway? Brought to you by the Gethsemane
Stewardship Team (Barbara Ford, Celia Conlon,
Andrea Mayer) with input from Hank Langknecht.
March 9,16,23,30, April 6 The Immigrant Experience: Then and Now
Should We Change the Inscription
on the Statue of Liberty?
Violet Meek
There are 23 First English Lutheran Churches in the
ELCA in Ohio and the nearby states. Have you ever
wondered why? For that matter, have you ever
wondered why the ELCA has a Slovak Synod?
Immigration is much in the news these days. But it
isn’t new. Immigration and the immigrant experience
have been a part of Lutheranism in America since our
earliest days on the North American continent. For
that matter, if you consider the Hebrew immigrants to
Egypt or the return of the Hebrews from exile in
Babylon and their reception by (and of) those who had
remained in the Kingdom of Judah, the story of
immigration is a very old one, told again and again.
And here we are again, trying to understand what God
would have us do now in this time. Each wave of
immigration to this country changes the immigrants
and changes the country itself. What should we think
about? What do we need to know?
In our Adult class on immigration we will start with the
stories of our own members who are immigrants
themselves or whose families were. We will look at
the ways for good and ill that America has responded
to past waves of immigration. Lutherans began as an
immigrant church, does that still matter to today’s
Lutherans? Should it?
We will also attempt to understand contemporary
issues. On March 23 Joyce Geary will share
immigration stories from the many ESL students she
has tutored over the years.
Our decisions about advocacy need to be based on a
thoughtful, prayerful understanding of what the Lord
is calling us to do.
“Take 30 Minutes” will center on what we can do that
is simple to be healthier in body and spirit. Everyone is
welcome on Friday, March 7, to join the conversation
at Bob Evans on Olentangy River Rd south of King Ave.
for breakfast or just coffee from 7-8:00am.

Gethsemane's Quilting Project Receives Thrivent Funding
We are excited to learn that once again our Lutheran World Relief quilting project
has received funding from the West Franklin County chapter of Thrivent Financial.
We are receiving $1800 which will allow us to purchase the fabric for quilt backs as
well as the batting and thread needed to complete the quilts. The quilt tops are
mostly made from donated fabrics but are supplemented with purchased fabric if
needed. The funding gives us the opportunity to create as many quilts as we can to
serve others in need around the world. Thank you Thrivent!
From the LWR Quilt website-
When you make and send a Quilt, you are not only comforting someone you have
never met, but providing an object that is useful in ways you probably never
imagined. In addition to being a cozy, clean new bed cover, it can be:
• a baby carrier, tied around a mother’s back;
• a market display, spread on the ground and piled with vegetables;
• a sack for transporting those goods to market;
• a sunshade;
• a shawl; and most importantly
• a constant reminder that someone, far away, cares a lot.
Help us do what we can at Gethsemane....sew a top (rolls of squares can be found
on the Sign-up desk with directions attached), come to a workday and knot,
purchase colorful fabric, pray for our quilt recipients (and our quilters).

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
All church leaders are encouraged to participate in the Wednesday night Lenten
Study using “Unbinding Your Heart”.
Hank Langknecht’s resignation letter was read and accepted. The Nominations
team will be advised to begin the search for a new Vice President.
SECRETARY’S REPORT
January minutes were previously emailed to council members. No corrections
reported. MOTION: (J. Kulikowski, C. Jessie) to approve the January minutes.
TREASURER’S REPORT
The budget process will begin soon. Council’s role will be to determine how to
handle any possible deficits. Process will conclude with Congregation Meeting
June 1.
FINANCIAL REPORT
Rick explained the various reports to new council members, drawing attention to
what is most important.
Contributions were on budget for January and ahead for the fiscal year but it is
too early to draw any conclusions.
We will be the fiscal agent for the Swahili Ministry (IYK) so new lines will be added
to reports for this.
MINISTRY TEAMS
Jill Woods asked for clarification of council’s expectations with regard to
Projection and the timeline for implementation. It was agreed that the promised
expectations of funding, volunteers and acceptable design must be fulfilled.
Proper implementation is more important than implementation by a deadline.
