Kay and Jim Wade have called Sunnyvale home since 1989. As the owner and Certified Financial Planner of UNITY Financial Services, Jim has been serving the Mesquite community helping people prepare financial plans since 1977. Kay, an educational diagnostician, retired from DISD now lends her talents to assist Jim in his office. They are pictured here with two of their six grandchildren. Mallory is a 9th grader at Dallas Christian School and Blake is a 5th grader at Sunnyvale Middle School. Jim stays very active in Sunnyvale currently serving as a town council member. He previously served six years as Mayor and three years as a School Board Trustee. His leadership in education continues now as Board President of the Dallas First Baptist Academy. Jim plays the trumpet in the First Baptist Dallas Adult Orchestra and the Dallas Praise Orchestra which has provided the opportunity to play music in seven foreign countries. He fills his spare time with the Mesquite Symphony Orchestra Association, the Friends of the Sunnyvale Public Library and the Hope Charitable Foundation, leading each as President. Kay and Jim are members of First Baptist Dallas where Jim serves as a Deacon and Kay serves in the Women’s Ministry and teaches in the Children’s Choir Program. Kay and Jim both love to travel and read, enjoy Southern Gospel music and stay busy with the activities of six awesome grandchildren who dance, sing, play baseball and soccer, and participate in almost every church activity held.

Expiration of Payroll Tax Holiday – An additional 2 percent tax on wages and self-employment income on earnings up to $ 113,700.

Additional Medicare Tax – An additional 0.9 percent tax on wages and in excess of $ 200,000 ($ 250,000 combined on a joint return, $ 125,000 for married taxpayers filing separate returns). The rates change from 1.45 percent to 2.35 percent on wages above $ 250,000 for married taxpayers filing jointly and above $ 200,000 for single taxpayers.

Long Term Capital Gains – The top rate goes from 15 percent to 20 percent. Coupled with the Medicare tax on investment income, long-term rates will increase to nearly 24 percent for those in the highest income tax brackets.

Qualified Dividends – The top rate went to 15 percent to 39.6 percent for in the highest income tax brackets. Coupled with the Medicare tax on investment income, rates will increase to more than 43 percent for those in the highest brackets.

High Medical Bills Tax – You have always been able to deduct medical bills that exceeded 7.5% of your adjusted gross income on your Form 1040. As of January 1, 2013 the threshold will increase from 7.5% to 10%, increasing the amount you will pay in taxes.

Flexible Spending Account Cap – Flexible Spending Accounts are accounts that millions use to pay for medical expenses pre-tax. You could also contribute to these accounts without limitations, but effective January 1, 2013; they will have a $ 2,500 annual cap.

Phase-out of the personal and dependent exemptions – Not since 2009 have we seen the phase-outs on exemptions. Beginning in 2013, taxpayers with incomes in excess of certain adjusted gross income (AGI) levels (singles at $ 250,000, married filing jointly at $ 300,000, head of household at $ 275,000; married filing separately at $ 150,000) will lose some or all of these exemption deductions. A couple with two dependent children with AGI over $ 450,000 could pay an additional tax of $ 6,200.

The good news is that many of the new tax rules are permanent, which will give individuals and business owners a welcome sense of stability. Also, these changes were better than the higher income taxes would have burdened just about all taxpayers had the tax cuts been allowed to simply expire without further action.
