2013 ❯❯ WOMEN’S BUSINESS NETWORK 3

I found out about the Comox Valley Women’s Business Network by being asked to present as a guest speaker. After meeting the group I really wanted to join. I was a new business owner in town that had moved here from Alberta after being a professional educator and was ready to meet some great people and become acquainted with this new community that I had just moved to. It didn’t take long and I felt right at home!

The Comox Valley Women’s Business Network is an inspiring, motivating group of like minded ladies. They come together to connect, converse, coach and care for each other. Many of our members are leaders in the Comox Valley both in business and in community. The years of wisdom and experience between members cannot be calculated as our membership spans the age range of 20 to 80+ years of age.

Our motto is Get Networking. Get Business. As a board we work diligently to meet the needs of our members through interacting, educating, inspiring the membership and believing in the power of number and sharing of a common goal.

Our group is open to any female wanting to grow, spread their wings and feel part of our family. We would love to have you join us and I promise you will feel right at home!

A lot of rock fans are positive that the group U2 invented that phrase. Others will bear you over the head with a bicycle pump insisting that Gloria Steinem deserves the credit. Actually, it was an Australian writer by the name of Irina Dunn, but attribution doesn’t really matter; it’s the sentiment that counts. A woman needs a man like a fi sh needs a bicycle. A Victoria cop takes down her would-be murderer even after he all but hacks off her hand and stabs her in the neck. “Ninety percent of my offi cers would have died in that attack” says police chief Jamie Graham. Not Constable Lane Douglas-Hunt, she’s back on duty as I speak.A woman named Alexandra Morton leads the campaign to get Norwegian fi sh farms out of our coastal waters; as woman named Elizabeth May leads the campaign to keep an oil pipeline to China out of our mountains and rivers and valley. Our premier is a woman, as was the last leader of the NDP, Carole James. Lots of women in leadership roles in BC; no fi sh or bicycles need apply.Still it was instructive to take a drive up island to the Comox Valley to deliver a keynote speech to the CVWBN. Which stands for Comox Valley Womens’ Business Network, a group of more than 70 local women entrepreneurs representing every profession from real estate to investment counseling, bookkeeping, graphics, advertising, public relations-you name it, they do it, and they get together once a month to network, have dinner together and listen to an after dinner speaker such as, well that bald guy from Salt Spring. As an observer it was fascinating for me. I couldn’t get over how vibrant and sizzly the evening was, compared to a lot of guy get-togethers I’ve sat

through. The business women of Comox Valley really meet when they meet. It happened to be International Women’s Day when I was their guest, and every woman stood up and said a few words about why she was glad to be a woman. I can’t imagine even suggesting such a thing in any of the male-dominated get-togethers I attend.Question I keep getting since I came back is; “So if the Comox Valley Women’s Business Network is so powerful, how come they asked a man to be their guest speaker?”I think the answer’s pretty obvious. They’re beyond that petty gender crap. If somebody’s got something to say, it really doesn’t matter how they’re wired. When Golda Meir became Prime Minister of Israel, a reporter asked her how it felt to be a Woman Prime Minister. Golda shrugged and said, “I don’t know; I’ve never been a Man Prime Minister.”

I’m Arthur Black on Planet Saltspring.

“ A woman needs a manlike a fi sh needs a bicycle.

Province of British Columbia

Office of the Premier www.gov.bc.ca

A Message from the Premier

As the Premier of the province of British Columbia, and the proud mother of my sonHamish, I know firsthand how difficult it can be to find balance. The way we find thatbalance may differ, but what unites us is our desire to be strong role models for thosearound us.

Supporting our kids’ ambitions and dreams is one of the best ways to honour the memory ofthe women who supported and helped us get where we are today. That’s why organizationslike the Comox Valley Women’s Business Network are so important: they help womenacross the province find that balance, realize their dreams, and give them the tools theyneed to succeed.

That’s why your government has made supporting women a priority. The Women in TradesTraining Program helps women find a good career fit, including paid apprenticeships. Our Micro Business Training Program provides up to $1,500 for business management skillstraining, and for access to capital, there are Community Business Loans and VentureAcceleration programs. The Women’s Mentorship Program provides one-on-one peermentoring as well.

Helping one another is what women do. It isn’t revolutionary – it’s what our parents didfor us. Now it’s our turn.

Sincerely,

Christy Clark Premier

BOOST stands for Building Opportunities for Organizations using our Strengths and Talents. We are now in year two of offering this program to our local community. The WBN as an organization, wanted to have the opportunity for our membership to support one Not For Profi t Group for the full year to help increase its profi le and connection with the community. Being that we are such a diverse group, we felt that not only could we monetarily assist but we also have skills and talents that are not available to them on a regular basis that could be of assistance to further develop their purpose and fulfi ll their wish lists. The board decided this year we would support The Today N Tomorrow Learning Society. They not only were in need of our support but also follow many of the same principles as we do. One member has helped the organization re-brand through her

marketing company. We have a custom sewer that has made special sandwich wrappers and snack pouches for them to use as a fundraising opportunity. One lady in the group has taught the food safe course to the individuals that participate in Today N’ Tomorrow Learning. As well we have had a dental hygienist come forward and offer her services at a reduced rate so the young mom’s and their children can still have their teeth well taken care of even though their circumstances may not accommodate that. All of the Women in Business members contributed to Christmas Hampers that each of the young mom’s received which was a wonderful surprise for them. Lastly and most important to us is to give the organization some exposure to further enhance the community support and connections that they already have developed.

It is an interesting business which when mentioned, turns the conversation to the present condition of the market.Realtors feel the pulse and can inform you if it’s healthy and beating, or in need of a pacemaker. We see lots of scenarios assisting people in upgrade, downsize, separation, divorce, death, estate sale, new construction, foreclosure and more. Powerful EnergyNetworking is essential for any successful business. The Comox Valley WBN is a powerful group of women that get down to business. The passion they have to nurture each other is loaded with energy at these meetings. I have seen growth of several new entrepreneurs build success with the support of WBN. The relationships and knowledge I have gained over the years will be remembered forever.

Long Lasting FriendshipsThe WBN was a wonderful opportunity to build long lasting friendships in a supportive and enjoyable enviroment. My experience was so positive that when I moved to Vernon two years ago, I joined the group here and am currently the President of the Vernon Women in Business

Susan Weeda 2001 - 2002

Proud & InspiredI joined WBN 4 years ago and I was inspired by the abundance of talent the women in the group had.

During my time as President, I was proud of our Board’s initiative to create the “Boost” program. I would like to say a huge Thank You to our members for giving me the opportunity to serve as President and allowing me to be a part of such an amazing group of women.
