MANAGER'S NOTES It’s hard to believe we’re nearing the end of our 2015-16 season. You have

demonstrated again how much you value Brampton’s premier performing arts centre – the Rose Theatre. So far, we’ve had 12 sold-out shows and ticket sales have been brisk across all genres of performing arts presented for your enjoyment this season.Ah, and now we’re approaching Subscriber Night and sponsor, donor appreciation events in May. The team is busy with this year’s stunning concept and design. You’re going to be amazed! So, subscribers and friends, do plan to attend! (Psst! We may be able to give you some hints in the next Odeum so do look for that.)

Rose TheatreIt is said, “What soap is to the body, laughter is to the soul.” It is also said that laughter is good for our health, yet we don’t seem to laugh enough! Comedy superstar Tom Green is in the house on March 4, commanding the stage and our attention. His non-stop, hilarious and brilliant, cracked view of the world around him will certainly make for an amusing time.Singing is also good for the soul; Brampton loves tribute shows and March is full of them!Billy Joel: The Classics entertains you on March 3. Prior to the show, attend an exclusive dinner experience in Studio Two. This is the last of the season’s dinners, but there will be more events just like this in 2016-17. Elton John – Greatest Hits fills our main hall on March 10 and will have you singing along and recalling fond memories. Finishing off the month is Rock the Rose: Bon Jovi and Aerosmith on March 24, performed by the tribute bands Aeroforce and Keep the Faith. All in all, a very healthy workout for all of us!

Other Arts and Culture Happenings

International Women’s Day Event: On March 8, the City of Brampton’s Entrepreneur Centre will be hosting a fantastic Women’s Day event, Balancing Life with Humour. Kate Davis will be providing her insight to help organizations empower their staff with effective tools for managing stress and sustaining motivation.

March Break camps

Performance Playhouse (ages 6-9 and 10-13, Rose Theatre Brampton) – a one-week program of fun, exploring a variety of dance styles and acting techniques. Crafts and games complement the program. Participants will use their new skills to create a theatrical performance using sound, lights and costumes onstage.

Art Studio Camp (ages 8-13, Lester B. Pearson Theatre Brampton). This is a week-long camp of creative exercises to develop basic elements of art, such as tone, line, perspective, texture and shape. A variety of materials will be explored, including charcoal, pencils, mixed media, watercolour and acrylic paints (materials costs included). Traditional camp games will complement the program. Campers will present an Art Show featuring their work at the end of each session.

When it comes to singing the classics in pop and rock, Phil Naro is your guy.

The longtime singer/songwriter has performed extensively across North America, emulating the vocals of musical icons including The Beatles, Queen, Yes and Supertramp. He’s a master of song, a wizard of imitation – but with his own unique style and charm.

That’s precisely why Paul Bailey of Hype Touring Agency brought Naro on board to take on the lead in the totally revamped tribute show Billy Joel: The Classics.

“It’s a brand-new show – there’s a brand-new cast, it’s a new group of people with new energy and new video components, and Phil as the new lead singer,” says Bailey, who manages his company from Brampton.

The tribute show to Billy Joel’s music, spanning his career from the ’70s to the ’90s, offers two hours of entertainment to audiences, complete with multimedia components and more than 25 songs on the roster.

It traverses through the chart toppers, such as “Piano Man,” “New York State of Mind” and “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant,” and weaves in some of the lesser-known tunes to create a comprehensive presentation of tunes from the acclaimed American singer/songwriter.

Naro, who has performed multiple times at The Rose, is thrilled to return with a new show. It will be his first time performing Billy Joel’s music, and he’s become immersed in the songs and sounds of the six-time Grammy Award winner.

“His melodies are really amazing,” says Naro. “He gets really ‘rock’ at times and then he goes more ‘easy listening’ – he covers all angles in his own style.”

While Billy Joel sings and plays piano during his performances, Naro will spend his time onstage focusing on vocals. He’ll be accompanied by nearly a dozen musicians onstage to play instruments and back up his singing.

“I like to do a full show, a spectacle,” says Bailey. “You are not going to be disappointed in the amount of songs or the energy of the show.”

One thing that separates Naro from other tribute artists is that he doesn’t pretend to be someone else. He appears as himself – long, dark, curly locks of hair and all – and only lends his voice to the tribute. It allows the audience to focus on the music, he said, rather than trying to picture him as someone else.

“I don’t look anything like Billy Joel,” he laughs. But he’s been working hard to emulate the star’s vocals.

Naro says he learned early on in his career that he could easily replicate the vocals of popular musicians – but he also invests a lot of time in learning how singers approach their

music, listening for subtle nuances that make their singing distinct.

He expects the Brampton show, which is part of a 19-stop tour, will be a lively and energetic evening.

The show takes a slightly different approach than other tribute shows he’s played in, like Classic Albums Live, where the performers play a record song for song, note for note. During the tribute to Billy Joel, there will be much interaction with the audience, and he expects the mood to be casual and light.

In addition to his performances with Hype Touring Agency and Classic Albums Live, Naro has his own musical career and expects to release a solo CD this year.

His own music, he says, focuses on great songs, good melodies and lyrics, and singing that touches people.

performance sponsored by:

being green:Tom Green has been many things over the years: talk show host, prankster, actor and comedian … but brewmaster?

True enough, through a partnership with close-to-Ottawa Beau’s Brewery, Mr. Green has had his own milk stout out on the market for the past three years – called, ironically enough, The Tom Green Beer!

According to the 44-year-old Green, it’s the best beer ever.“The beer is delicious,” says Green over the phone from a recent

stopover at his Ottawa home. “It has a really amazing flavour to it. They use a milk stout because it’s lactose sugar. When you brew beer with sugar, you usually don’t have any of that flavour or sweetness left in the beer. With lactose sugar, the sugars don’t break down the same way, so it leaves this coffee sweetness to it that’s very, very tasty.”

Why a milk stout? Green says the origins came in tribute to his earlier days “when I used to squirt milk bags all over my guests on my TV show. They (Beau’s) suggested it.”

Ah yes, The Tom Green Show. It first appeared on basic cable locally on Rogers in Ottawa, and Green’s propensity for staging pranks – sometimes at the expense of his parents – brought him national notoriety.

Some of the more shocking, extreme and bizarre stunts involved roadkill and sucking on a cow’s udder – and eventually helped pave the way to his own internationally popular MTV show called … The New Tom Green Show.

That notoriety also made Hollywood sit up and take notice, offering him a chance to write and star in his own Razzie Award-winning comedy Freddy Got Fingered and roles in the comedies Road Trip and Stealing Harvard, as well as a cameo performance on the hit blockbuster Charlie’s Angels, starring his future wife, Drew Barrymore. (They’ve since divorced.)

Nowadays, however, Green has left the video pranks behind.

“Am I going out on the street and shooting pranks on video anymore?” he asks. “No, I’m not. It’s not like I’m trying to get away from it. I did it for 20 years, and now we’re in a world where everybody has a video camera in their cellphone, and an editing system in their laptop computer or their phone.

“There are millions of people doing it on YouTube. And I’ve always tried to be somebody who stands out from what everyone else is doing. Stand-up is the place right now where I’m able to do that best. There are so many people doing pranks now I feel like I’d just be following the herd if I kept doing them.”

Green has also turned to the Net for some of his more recent successes: from 2006-2011, he hosted Tom Green’s House Tonight in Los Angeles – literally from his living room – and later a weekly talk show called Tom Green Live on aXs tV.

Currently, you can find more stuff on the TomGreen.com website, which includes several videos and his podcast of the Tom Green Radio Show.

As much as some observers may think of his current stand-up comedy tour as a new platform of expression for Green, it’s actually a return to his roots.

“I was doing stand-up long before I was doing that other stuff,” he admits. “I was at Yuk Yuk’s here in Ottawa as a teenager. And a lot of the roots of The Tom Green Show were based in stand-up. I modelled the show after (Late Night with) David Letterman in a lot of ways.

“I was always into outrageous comedy, so I’m trying to incorporate my sensibilities into my stand-up show. I’m standing at a microphone. I don’t use props. I’m telling jokes. I’m telling stories. I’m throwing myself into the world of social commentary, talking about how we’re living in 2016 and all the absurdities and things I find ridiculous.

“Hopefully, people will leave thinking about the world differently than when they walked in.”

“I want my stand-up show to be the most outrageous and ridiculous night of comedy that you’ve ever been to.”

He then makes an interesting point: with the current fragmentation of TV audiences and the fact that US news outlets are worried about ratings to the point where they lobby softball questions at potential presidential candidates, Green has no such worries of being censored on the stage.

“Stand-up comedy is one of the last podiums where you can speak your mind and not fear getting cancelled,” he explains. “I have no boss, no executive producer, and no network head telling me what I have to say in order not to offend anyone.”

Started in 2003 by producer Craig Martin, Classic Albums live (CAl) is a concert

series that is exactly what it sounds like: musicians perform classic rock and roll

albums, like The beatles’ Let it Be, Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, The Eagles’

Hotel California and more, in the style of the original artists, taking the audience back

CAL employs a rotating roster of multi-talented musicians who bring classic rock albums to life. This month at The Rose, performer Murray James Bosch will lead a band while channelling Elton John to perform his greatest hits, like “Crocodile Rock” and “Tiny Dancer.”

It’s not a tribute show, exactly – there are no costumes or wigs to transform the performers into Mick Fleetwood, say, or Elton John.

But one thing CAL audiences can bet on is that the musicians onstage will be having just as good a time as they will.

“Classic Albums Live is not a job for us,” says Bosch. “We love the albums. We’re dedicated to this music because that’s how we became musicians – we played along with it in our living rooms.”

Elton John isn’t the only musician Bosch has emulated for CAL – he started out with the company performing songs by The Police (his audition tape included a recording of him singing “Roxanne”). And he refuses to play favourites. “My favourite is all the albums,” he says. “When I was growing up, my favourite singer was Freddy Mercury from Queen. Elton John was up there too, along with The Beatles.”

It’s actually thanks to his sister that he first became an Elton John fan.

“I often tell audiences that I’m the youngest in my family, so I got to raid my siblings’ record collections,” he says. “I found my sister’s Captain Fantastic album; that’s how I discovered Elton. I just loved it from the start.”

So how does Bosch channel the music of Elton John without resorting to wigs or John’s trademark wild wardrobe?

“I channel it by trying to get the same phrasing and same emotion as Elton uses when he sings,” he says. “What made me an Elton John fan in the first place is that very feeling, that emotion, the way that he delivers a lyric. And when it calls for intimacy to have that with the audience, and when it calls for a full on rock out to do that.”

Emotion trumps outfit.“It really comes down to understanding as another artist

what an artist is feeling and projecting, and I think that’s what we do really well,” he says. “We put ourselves into their shoes, so to speak, because we understand what they’re singing about and why they’re singing it that way. It just comes with hundreds of hours of listening to the music.”

Bosch says that his love for the music is what connects him to the audience.

“We’re all here because we’re fans first and foremost,” he says. “I don’t see much of a barrier between the band and the audience.”

The City of Brampton’s Arts and Culture team is experiencing an

upsurge with emerging artists being highlighted in local coffee shops and

storefronts, and artisans taking advantage of opportunities to showcase their work at our local

farmers’ markets and art galleries. Check out the walls the next time you’re sitting in one of our downtown

restaurants as Brampton artists are featured on many of them. Find a new favourite artist or explore a new genre.

Most of the work is available for purchase and you’ll even get the chance to meet the person who created the art.

A new Arts and Culture e-newsletter has made its debut and is a great addition to the popular Rose Theatre e-newsletter. Highlighting local art and artists from all disciplines, this e-newsletter will keep you informed about the exciting things happening across our city. Art classes, open-mic events, volunteer opportunities, calls to artists and invitations to workshops and networking events will be featured. Receive Brampton’s Arts and Culture news in your inbox every month! Subscribe at www.rosetheatre.ca.

The artists and artisans that will be featured in the Artists’ Marketplace at our downtown and Mount Pleasant farmers’ markets this summer are currently being reviewed, and we’re excited at the quality and selection of items that will be available to visitors. Make sure you stop by the markets and support these creative individuals. You’ll be able to take home something one-of-a-kind and interesting. And local!

The Arts and Culture section has started a regular networking event for artists, members of arts groups and arts supporters. Creative Exchange is a chance for creative people to connect with each other and Arts and Culture section staff to talk about promotion of and support for the arts in our city. Connecting fosters collaboration, and resource and idea sharing. With all the creative minds in our city, it’s going to be exciting to see what happens

when you put them all together. Our next event is Wednesday, April 20 from 7:00PM – 8:00PM in the Rose Theatre Lobby; hope to see you there!

Arts and culture is one way a city shows its distinct personality, and what a personality it is! Easygoing, cultured, interesting, edgy,

innovative. And friendly. You’ll get along just fine, so do come out and play!
