We’re late. We know we are late, and we are late deliberately.

Did you notice?

Normally, we would have announced our new season by now. Early in

December, we took a fresh look at the upcoming season, and decided that

we needed to rethink it. The ASO is, at its heart, a nexus for innovation.

Everything we do tries to balance the new and experimental with the

traditional, popular and important. When we looked at what we had

planned for the 2013-14 season it was, to be blunt, too safe. We didn’t

exactly start over, but we did take a fresh look at it and decide to make

some significant changes. These changes are focused on attracting new

audience members and re-energizing the concert going experience.

We expect the new season announcement to drop in early April. When it

does, we think you will agree we are being true to that balance of innovation

and tradition. In the mean time, thanks for your patience and for being here

tonight. Patrons like you are why we do what we do.

RoBERt SPAno, Music Director

Recognized as one of the brightest and most imaginative conductors of his generation, Robert Spano is in his 12th season as Music Director

of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and has elevated the ensemble to new levels of international prominence.

Under Mr. Spano’s artistic leadership, the Orchestra and its audiences have explored a creative mix of programming, including Theater of a Concert performances, which use different formats, settings, and enhancements for the musical performance experience. The Atlanta School of Composers reflects Mr. Spano’s and the Orchestra’s commitment to nurturing and championing music through multiyear partnerships defining a new generation of American composers. Since 2001 Mr. Spano and the Orchestra have performed more than 100 concerts containing contemporary works and, by the end of the 2012-13 season, will have performed 16 ASO-commissioned world premieres.

Mr. Spano has a discography with the Orchestra of 19 recordings, six of which have won Grammy awards. He has led the Orchestra in performances at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and at the Ravinia, Ojai, and Savannah Music Festivals.

As Music Director of the Aspen Music Festival and School, Mr. Spano oversees the programming of more than 300 events and educational programs, including Aspen’s American Academy of Conducting. Dedicated to pedagogy and multidisciplinary studies, he has lectured on “Community” for TEDx and recently completed a three-year residency at Emory University. In its 165-year history, Emory University has honored only seven other individuals with such expansive residencies, including the Dalai Lama, President Jimmy Carter, and author Salman Rushdie.

Musical America’s 2008 “Conductor of the Year,” Mr. Spano is on the faculty of Oberlin Conservatory, and received honorary doctorates from Bowling Green State University, the Curtis Institute of Music, Emory University, and Oberlin, as well as Columbia University’s Ditson Conductor’s Award for the advancement of American music.

Mr. Spano’s 2012-13 guest engagements include the New York and Los Angeles philharmonics; San Francisco, Boston, Cleveland, Chicago, and Philadelphia symphony orchestras; and Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala, BBC Symphony, and Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He has conducted at Covent Garden, Welsh National Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Houston Grand Opera, and the 2005 and 2009 Seattle Opera Ring Cycles.

Steve Martin is currently in the fifth decade of a uniquely varied and accomplished career in which he’s excelled as a comedian, actor, author and playwright, and

as a Grammy-winning, boundary-pushing bluegrass banjoist and composer.

This spring, Rounder Records will release Steve Martin’s third full length album called “Love Has Come For You.” The album is a unique collaboration with songwriter Edie Brickell and is set for release on April 23. The remarkable new album offers 13 eloquently rootsy compositions that combine Martin’s inventive five-string banjo work with Brickell’s distinctive vocals and vivid, detail-rich lyrics. “Love Has Come For You” is a substantial departure, as a well as a creative milestone, for both artists.

In 2011, Martin released his second full length bluegrass album “Rare Bird Alert.” Produced by Tony Trishka, the album featured 13 Martin-penned tracks as well as special guest vocal appearances by Paul McCartney and The Dixie Chicks. Additionally, Martin co-wrote two of the CD’s songs with the Grammy®-winning bluegrass band, Steep Canyon Rangers. Prior to this, Martin was honored with a Grammy® for his debut album, “The Crow: New Songs For The Five-String Banjo,” which won for Best Bluegrass Album in 2010.

Martin began his career on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour (1967-1969), for which he earned his first Emmy Award® for Outstanding Writing Achievement in Comedy, Variety, or Music in 1969. In the mid-1970s, Martin shone as a stand-up on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and made appearances on HBO’s On Location and NBC’s Saturday Night Live. STEEP CANYON RANGERS

Steep Canyon Rangers, a bluegrass band formed by college friends at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, just won their first Grammy award

for Best Bluegrass Album in 2012 for their latest album, Nobody Knows You. Released April 10, 2012, Nobody Knows You, is the seventh album from the North Carolina-based group and their Rounder Records debut. Met with critical and commercial acclaim, Nobody Knows You – co-produced by 9-time Grammy winner Gary Paczosa – is fueled by deft musicianship, original songwriting, distinctive vocals and creative arrangements that eschew all formulas.

This success follows the highly celebrated album Rare Bird Alert, their first recorded collaboration with Steve Martin. Released in March of 2011, Rare Bird Alert debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Bluegrass Chart and at No. 43 on the Billboard Top 200. Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers have toured together extensively since 2010. Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers won the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year award in 2011.

Coming off their Grammy win, the Steep Canyon Rangers will continue touring extensively, including stops at MerleFest and Telluride Bluegrass Festival. This spring and summer, they will tour with Steve Martin and Edie Brickell to support the duo’s upcoming release of Love Has Come to You. Upcoming television appearances include “Late Night with David Letterman,” “The View” and “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” with Martin and Brickell and they are slated for a CNN appearance in early March. They have also appeared on “The Colbert Report” and “Austin City Limits.”

SCR will begin recording their next album at Levon Helm Studios in late February with Larry Campbell producing. Campbell is a three-time Grammy award-winning producer and currently serves as musical director for the Levon Helm Midnight Ramble concerts.

The members of the Steep Canyon Rangers are Charles R. Humphrey III, Nicky Sanders, Mike Guggino, Graham Sharp, and Woody Platt.

When Doug Sommer shows up for work, he does not sit in a cubicle or behind a desk, but rather a 19th century Italian bass, as he has been for the last 24 years as a bassist with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO). His weeks are filled with intense rehearsals and his weekends with world-class performances, but he does not have to go very far to spend time with his son, Andrew, who is also a bass player in the Atlanta Youth Symphony Orchestra (ASYO).

For Doug, a fraction of his career as a professional musician has been spent with the ASO, but for his son, the Orchestra has been a part of his entire life.

“Andrew has literally grown up with the Orchestra,” said Doug. “From the time he was little I would bring him to rehearsals and concerts. Everyone has seen him grow from just a kid to who he is now.”

Growing up around the Orchestra has made memories for not only Doug and the people who watched Andrew grow, but for Andrew himself.

“I remember when I was really little going to Halloween concerts all dressed up in these costumes,” said Andrew. “I would even spend Christmas there watching Norman Mackenzie and the chorus.”

Being surrounded by the Orchestra was the perfect recipe for Andrew’s decision to follow in his dad’s musical footsteps — but ask him where his talent comes from, and he will be very quick to tell you.

“I started taking bass lessons from my dad when I was eight, and he’s really taught me

everything I know,” said Andrew. “He’s always been my mentor.”

By the time Andrew was a freshman he, like his sister before him, joined the ASYO, which has seen some of the nation’s finest young musicians since its establishment in 1974. According to Doug, this was a decision that came very easily for them.

“My daughter joined the Youth Orchestra when she was a sophomore and Andrew when he was a freshman,” explains Doug. “It honestly was never a question for them; they always wanted to do it.”

In the Sommer household, music is not just a leisure activity, but a way of life. Doug Sommer and his wife, Phyllis, have surrounded their children with music since before they were even born.

“My wife, who is a wonderful soprano singer, would sing to Andrew and the kids while they were still in the womb,” said Doug. “When they were born, that voice became very important to them; they all expected it and wanted it. That was the earliest and I think one of the biggest influences on the kids and on Andrew.”

Doug has been Andrew’s mentor from the time he began playing bass and continues to teach him today. Sometimes, though, the student surpasses the maestro — at least according to Doug.

“There’s no doubt that Andrew has more talent than me. No doubt at all,” said Doug. “He’s so much more advanced than I was at his age.”

Although Doug sees just how talented Andrew is now, his talent was something that he noticed when Andrew was just a child.

“We realized very early on that he had a great ear for music,” said Doug. “When he was only four or five, he would walk over to the piano and play the melody of a hymn he just heard in church. His ear and his sense of pitch were pretty remarkable.”

Although Doug recognizes his son’s talent to be better than his own, Andrew does not see it quite the same.

“Oh, he still kicks my butt classically, and he will for a long time,” said Andrew. “I just have so much respect for him musically.”

That respect goes beyond music. For Andrew, his father has been a guide for the person he has become.

“That’s one thing that’s so cool about our

relationship,” said Andrew. “He has not only been my bass teacher, but he has taught me how to be a respected musician through your actions, and by being a humble, gracious person.”

Music has been a constant element in Andrew and Doug’s lives which has unquestionably brought them closer together. Even as Andrew takes a quick break from his rehearsal in Los Angeles to perform at the 2013 Grammy Awards, he still has time to pay respect to his father.

“My dad is such an incredible musician, but because he’s so humble, he never goes out and seeks attention,” said Andrew. “Most kids who want to be musicians don’t have parents who understand the musical life. I’m lucky to have one who truly gets it.”

In 2010, he began working seriously on a co-commission from the Atlanta Sym-phony Orchestra (ASO) and the Savan-nah Music Festival for his composition — a piano concerto. With the help of two FSU music students as assistant or-chestrators and copyists, the concerto took shape. As a result, Music Director Robert Spano and the ASO will perform “Spirit of the Blues: Piano Concerto in C Minor,” with the Marcus Roberts Trio during the “A King Remembrance” con-cert April 4 and 5 in Atlanta Symphony Hall, and again at the Savannah Music Festival on Saturday, April 6, 2013.

“It’s the single hardest thing I’ve ever had to do,” Roberts says bluntly. “I had been trying to prepare myself gradually over time to tackle something like this.” Among his challenges:Jazz and classical musicians often speak two different languages, he says. Roberts had to learn the nuances of writing for classical musicians.

Better technology wasn’t available un-til recently. Specialty programs to assist

sight-impaired composers like Roberts with orchestration weren’t easily acces-sible when he first hatched the idea.

He had to balance a rebellious streak with his traditional side. Roberts’ impro-visations at the piano, at the same time meandering and tight, keep audiences breathless. He often draws on disparate influences. But he was determined to write in the classic concerto style — three movements.

A long-time friend of the Atlanta Sym-phony Orchestra — his appearances with the ASO date back to 1999 and have often involved a Gershwin program — Roberts undertook the concerto as an ASO co-commission.

Spano had encouraged Roberts to write a concerto which built on his talents — particularly improvisations with classical allusions.

After hearing Roberts perform Gershwin several times, “I thought, oh well, man, this guy has got to write a piano concerto for himself,” Spano says.

“It’s so inspiring to hear him improvise,” he adds. “[Some weeks] we did ‘Rhap-sody in Blue’ five times in a row, and each time his improvisations were completely different — each day. That just astonish-es me, his power of invention.”

Roberts agrees: “It’s never, ever the same,” he says. “Ever.”

Roberts adds that the “Spirit of the Blues” commission was based on the ar-tistic trust of both parties and little else — after all, he didn’t have a reputation as a classical composer. But he himself liked the orchestra’s sound, felt comfortable with its musicians and had faith in its conductor. “I know that [Spano is] going to get to some component of this piece that I may not even think about because he’s a great conductor, and he’s a great communicator with his orchestra.”

Roberts says Atlanta audiences are friend-ly and generally open to new experienc-es like melding classical and jazz. He’s hopeful that lovers of one genre or the other can find some common ground in the concerto. “Spirit of the Blues” draws influences from Ludwig van Beethoven, Maurice Ravel and Bela Bartok, and gets a rhythmic boost from trio members Ja-son Marsalis and Rodney Jordan.

But even though audiences may welcome the blend, writing for both music forms

challenged Roberts. Not only are classi-cal and jazz different languages, but col-laboration is a “central principle” of jazz performance.

The concerto is dedicated to conductor Seiji Ozawa, whom Roberts considers a mentor. Ozawa inspired him to bring the worlds of jazz and classical music togeth-er. “When we first used to work together he wasn’t very comfortable with the jazz improvisation part of it. It took years, but we really got to the point where he was very relaxed and having a lot of fun.” Roberts says he learned to work with a conductor’s and an orchestra’s needs.

And to the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who fought to bring all people together.

Roberts, along with his trio, perform on several recordings of Gershwin material. Gershwin himself crossed musical genres in the early 20th century, so Roberts feels at home interpreting his work.

“It puts you in touch with greatness,” he says. “[As an artist,] You’re always look-ing for the beacon from above.”

After the “A King Remembrance con-certs,” the Marcus Roberts Trio and ASO will perform “Spirit of the Blues” at the Savannah Music Festival. This perfor-mance will mark the Orchestra’s seventh consecutive appearance at the festival.
