Open Registration for Spring “B” 2012 – Classes start March 19, 2012. Visit a campus near you or register online at www.DaytonaState.edu. For more information, call (386) 506-3059. Continues through April 1 at the Lyonia Gallery in Deltona Stuart Rome: Wonders Stuart Rome followed in the footsteps of many of the great progenitors of natural science and journeyed to the heart of the Florida Peninsula. His celebrated landscape images draw their inspiration and take their lead from the writings, journals and illustrations of many of these important early naturalists. They examine the visual evidence present in the landscape of our cultural priorities and history, and expand upon the standard landscape vocabulary to build a complex language of layers, networks and connections in the landscape. Exhibitions at the Daytona State College Southeast Museum of Photography’s LYONIA GALLERY present photography related to environmental, land-use, local history and regional culture that complement the educational themes and environmental awareness of the Lyonia Center. The museum gallery occupies display space immediately adjacent to the environmental exhibits area of the Center. Open during Lyonia Environmental Center's hours of operation: 9 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 1 - 5 p.m. Sunday. Deltona Regional Library, 2150 Eustace Ave., Deltona For additional information, call (386) 506-4475. Jan. 27 - April 22, SURFLAND: Joni Sternbach Presented by the Daytona State College Southeast Museum of Photography: historic technique meets contemporary subject in the stunning luminosity of SurfLand. On the beaches of Montauk’s Ditch Plains and Rhode Island to Malibu, Del Mar and Rincon in California, and most recently on Australia’s Pacific Coast, Sternbach’s distinctive process lures surfers to pose for her camera and results in what the photographer calls “part performance, part laboratory.” http://smponline.org/ex_sternbach_surfland.html MUSEUM HOURS: OPEN – Tues., Thurs., Fri.: 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Wed.: 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. Weekends: 1 - 5 p.m. CLOSED Mondays. Free admission. Daytona Beach Campus, Hosseini Center (#1200), SMP 1200 W. Int'l. Speedway Blvd., Daytona Beach For additional information, call (386) 506-4475.

Jan. 27 - April 22, FLUIDRIVE-MODERN DAGUERROTYPES: Curtis Wehrfritz Presented by the Daytona State College Southeast Museum of Photography: "The series of work, entitled "Fluidrive" is focused on the use of ritual. I am interested in a lyric image that can be revisited by the viewer in the way one re-visits the feelings created in a song or prose. The daguerreotype is kind of a reliquary that you can hold in your hands and use like a prayer box. The fact that these "mirrors" last forever and have the ability to render subjects almost as holograms puts us in a discussion with our own memories," says Curtis Wehrfritz. MUSEUM HOURS: OPEN – Tues., Thurs., Fri.: 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Wed.: 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. Weekends: 1 - 5 p.m. CLOSED Mondays. Free admission. Daytona Beach Campus, Hosseini Center (#1200), SMP 1200 W. Int'l. Speedway Blvd., Daytona Beach For additional information, call (386) 506-4475. March 5, 6 - 9 p.m. Branding for the Small Business: Putting the Why before the How Presented by the Small Business Development Center at Daytona State College, this first in a series of three marketing workshops is presented by Bud Hanson, owner of Fish-On Marketing. Most consumers are extremely loyal purchasers of no more than four to six major brands. What makes these brands better than their competitors? It’s often not their advertising tactics, their price, or the packaging - but the promise they have delivered upon, the story they tell, and the way it makes you feel. Small businesses can apply these same principles in their own marketing plan. This is a critical foundation workshop where you’ll learn how to create demand and build your business like a major brand and also understand why people buy. Bud has been in the field of marketing with Fortune 100 companies and counseled many others for more than 25 years. His unique insight is critical in forming the strategy (or why) for the next two workshops in this series (the how). Cost for the three workshop series is $75. A philosopher, architectural preservationist and an early surrealist, Clarence John Laughlin's photography and writings documented the cultural and metaphysical landscape of 20th century America. Throughout his career, Laughlin struggled against an intellectual prejudice directed toward Southern artists of his day. Ostracized by the photographic in-crowd for using techniques that were not yet accepted, Laughlin's work challenged a world that was becoming dehumanized by war and urbanization. Laughlin's legacy is a remarkable body of work, and a testament to an artist who relentlessly drove himself to create photographs that reflected his vision of the human condition Today, his 17,000 master prints are considered to be one of the most important archives in American photography.
