Biography

Marcella Killen was born Marcella Fitzgerald in Minneapolis December 19, 1909. She was the firstwoman nominated to run for Congress in Minnesota. She lost a primary race as a liberal Republican in1946, then ran as the DFL candidate in both 1948 and 1950, losing both times. She was politically activein other causes, as well, She worked for 10 years in the U.S. Department of the Interior. She and herhusband Starr retired to Winter Haven, Florida where she died September 11, 1993.

Collection Description

Two boxes. Papers include clippings, correspondence, reports, campaign materials, 1935-1979. Whetherthe original order or from a previous reorganization, papers are grouped primarily chronologically;several items are also grouped by conversation. The order of the papers has been maintained with somerefoldering dependent on space. (For example, correspondence and papers originally from the July 1946folder are now in the July-December 1946 folder.)

Marcella Fitzgerald Killen

Marcella Killen was born Marcella Fitzgerald in Minneapolis December

19, 1909. She was the first woman nominated to run for Congress in

Minnesota. She lost a primary race as a liberal Republican in 1946, then

ran as the DFL candidate in both 1948 and 1950, losing both times. She

was politically active in other causes She worked for 10 years in the U.S.

Department of the Interior. She and her husband Starr retired to Winter

Haven, Florida where she died September 11, 1993.
