As of November 1, THRIVE had already distributed more food,

financial assistance, and budget education to the community in

2017 than it did in all of 2016. Among other accomplishments,

THRIVE has purchased, renovated, and moved into a permanent

facility. The food pantry is giving healthier foods to each household

that includes at least a package of frozen chicken, beef, and pork

plus fresh produce, and more.

To further encourage household sustainability, THRIVE has

initiated a Career Assistance program, with a professional in the

field who can help build resumes, hone interviewing skills, and

navigate job searches. This year, THRIVE will begin bi-annual

meetings for church liaisons and leaders in order to create

opportunities to network and partner with one another on

programs and provide feedback to the THRIVE Ministry.

Client Testimony

Tammy is a school

bus driver. During

school breaks or when

school is cancelled for

snow days, she

doesn’t get paid. The

recent bad weather

caused a financial

hardship for Tammy and her household which

includes a teenage and an adult son, and a two-year

-old granddaughter. Because she couldn’t pay her

rent, she called the Housing Crisis Hotline and was

put in touch with THRIVE. She said she was treated

with respect and kindness, and the staff was able to

expedite the funds needed to prevent her eviction.

Plus, a THRIVE volunteer filled a grocery cart with

healthy food for her family. With the summer break

coming up, Tammy is looking for another job that will

offer a stable paycheck to avoid a future crisis.

Pat Smith has been a

volunteer in the THRIVE

front office for about a

year. She learned of the

volunteer opportunity,

shortly after she retired,

through a notice in the

church bulletin at Denbigh

United Presbyterian. Her

duties include answering

the phone, taking food

referrals from United Way, data entry, and filing.

Although her regular shift is Monday afternoons

from 1-3pm, she frequently fills in for others when

the staff and volunteers are short-handed. Pat also

volunteers at Mary Immaculate Hospital. She says

the best thing about her volunteer work is that it is

helping people. For Pat and others like her, it’s a

“feel good thing.” Thank you Pat for always going

above and beyond the normal call of duty!
