What the Bay Area eats, Sonoma County grows. Although famous for its wine, Sonoma County has been an agricultural powerhouse since the days of the Bear Flag Revolt. Amid the many vineyards are acres of productive farms, some new and some generations old. Currently, Sonoma County is at the forefront of the local food movement and offers many diverse products from apples to honey to wool and bacon. Farms offer an epicurean and educational experience for the whole family to enjoy.

Farm Trails is devoted to keeping the relationship of grower and eater closer and more connected than ever. This guide is your road map to the unique farms that encompass the several geographical areas of Sonoma County. Pick a region from the map or search by product, and start an agricultural adventure with the members of Farm Trails.

Sonoma County Farm Trails began in 1973 as a cooperative effort by local farmers to market directly to customers via on-site sales. As a not-for-profit membership organization dedicated to preserving sustainable and diverse agriculture in Sonoma County, Farm Trails continues to promote farm-based sales and educational opportunities- creating lasting memories for thousands of families each year.

What began as a marketing initiative by local farmers 39 years ago, each year becomes more relevant as new generations of families look to reconnect with the land, the plants and the animals which sustain us all. Visitors come to Sonoma County from all over the Bay Area, the US and abroad to enjoy a wonderful diversity of products and to experience the farm life.

Use this guide to create your own custom adventures and outings in Sonoma County any time of year. Experience everything from animal husbandry, bee keeping, apple picking, wine tasting and more as you travel Farm Trails from Petaluma in the south to Geyserville and Cloverdale in the north, Sonoma in the east and Sebastopol, Occidental and Bodega in the West. Each of our members is dedicated to providing wonderful interactive experiences, unique flavors and amazing educational and photographic opportunities.

Farm Trails offers special seasonal events where the farmers go all-out to provide exciting farm tours and experiences that often include live music, rides, tastings and special activities. You won’t want to miss Blossoms, Bees and Barnyard Babies in the spring, the Gravenstein Apple Fair in August and the official Weekends Along the Farm Trails from September 29th through October 28th. We especially want to invite you to join us this year at Farm Trails’ annual Gravenstein Apple Fair, held at Ragle Ranch Park in Sebastopol, August 11th-12th. This marvelous country fair offers music and entertainment, food and drink, farm life displays, fun children’s activities, and of course, freshly harvested Gravenstein apples!

The Gravenstein Apple Fair is also the main fundraiser for Sonoma County Farm Trails. Your admission fee enables us to provide farm experiences for thousands of families each year and helps to ensure a thriving agriculture for future generations. Tips for Visiting Farms• Select your route and the farms you want to visit. Only

farms with numbers on the map are open for public visits. Verify the hours of operation. If the farm description indicates that you need to make an appointment, please call in advance to make arrangements.

• Use a trusted map source or GPS to get detailed directions for your route. The maps in this guide are only reference points.

• Drive slowly on dirt roads.

• Check-in upon arrival. Many are working farms and family homes, and not all areas are open to the public.

• Keep your children with you at all times. Although they may appear “park-like,” these are working farms.

• Dress appropriately for all weather and wear closed-toed shoes made for all terrain. Don’t forget your hats and sunscreen.

• Bring cash for on-site purchases as some farms do not accept credit cards.

• Pack some snacks and drinks, and be sure to carry out anything you bring in. Ask the farmer for recommendations on local places to eat.

• Bring a cooler and bags or baskets to take home your bounty.

• Remember to wash your hands after petting animals.

• Leave your pets at home unless you have a service dog, and then let the farmer know ahead of time.

In the Defense of LardDearest Consumers of Food,

I am writing to implore you to give a second chance to that much maligned, often ridiculed, and fattiest of outcasts, lard. Once the gold standard of many a grandmother’s kitchen, Lard has disappeared from the shelves of supermarkets and the pages of many a modern cookbook. Over the years, lard had become the scapegoat for our ever-burgeoning belt sizes and big behinds. Now science is telling a different story, one where our hero is not the cause of heart attacks and triple bypasses, but rather that flavorless wolf in sheep’s clothing, margarine, is the true culprit (well, along with supersized meals and corn syrup and highly processed packaged foods).

Now I urge the non-vegetarian and culinary curious to once again embrace this cousin of butter. Some might feel that lard is solely for the use of the fancy chef, but nay! It can be used by even the most modest of cooks to enhance the flavor of many a recipe. Replace butter for lard in your next pie crust, and see that the flakiness cannot be matched. Guiltlessly grill your next cheese sandwich in lard. Feeling like you’re ready for something more advanced? Fry some pig skins in lard! Want a difficult weekend project that you’re likely to leave unfinished? Make some soap out of lard! (I’m guilty of this.)

Are you now wondering where you can find this feel good goop, this fat of the fearless? Be rest assured that your new obsession with lard will be well understood by them. Many of these farmers raise rare, heritage breeds and all are devoted to the humane treatment of their hogs. Nothing beats getting your lard directly from the farm.

With its close proximity to the Golden Gate Bridge, Petaluma has long supplied the urban hubs of the Bay Area with a wide variety of products. Its iconic rolling grasslands are home to many different types of livestock, from grass-fed beef to Babydoll Southdown Sheep. This area also is known for its artisanal cheeses and dairy products. Windsor to CloverdaleAlready a popular destination for tourists seeking a vacation in wine country, this area is also home to many interesting farms and farmers. With products ranging from heirloom veggies to heritage breed pigs, this little valley is quite productive. The Gravenstein Apple Fair has been a Sonoma County tradition for 39 years. This year, we’re making some improvements to the Fair layout and attractions. Farm Trails asked fair goers what we could do to improve the Fair and we’re including many of those ideas in this year’s event. The 2012 Gravenstein Apple Fair will focus on Children and Agriculture. We’re expanding and adding new activities & attractions and we’re going “green.” If you’ve been to the Fair in the past, you’ll see all of your old favorites and much more! The Apple Fair is moving out to the grassy ballfields with room for more vendors, more exhibitors, and MORE FUN!
