As of January 1st, 2009, the Manitowoc Marine Group (Marinette Marine, Bay Shipbuilding, and ACE Marine) became the Fincantieri Marine Group (FMG), a subsidiary of the Italian enterprise Fincantieri-Cantieri Navali Italiani S.p.A.

Fincantieri is renowned as a premier shipbuilder of both commercial and military vessels. The Fincantieri Group in Europe includes 8 shipyards for new construction, 3 shipyards for repairs and conversions (one of them in cooperation with the German partner Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven), 2 design centers, an R&D center, and 2 manufacturing units for the production of naval systems and components. With a staff of 9,400, more than 30,000 people work within the production network, including subcontractors and ancillary industries. Fincantieri has a history dating back 200 years, and a track record of producing more than 7,000 ships.

Fincantieri’s plans for FMG include a significant capital investment aimed at increasing facilities’ automation, ship production throughput and international competitiveness. As a part of the Fincantieri enterprise, FMG will have the opportunity to leverage proven Fincantieri best-shipbuilding practices and new construction techniques via technology transfer, further enabling the U.S. Shipyards to offer highly competitive vessels to their customers.
