The Filipino’s deep reservoir of singing talents comes to a fore as “Sing Galing Canada 2015” reach-es its final leg on May 30 to proclaim the first ever singing King or Queen of songs in Hamilton.

It’s actually a double treat or twin bill of an event as Filipino OPM leg-end Rey Valera makes an encore performance at the finals of the singing contest, the first of its kind perhaps in Canada.

Plans are afoot to make the competi-tion Canada-wide as it explores the vast minefield of singing talents of Filipinos across Canada from the Prairie to the nation’s capital of Ottawa.

Hamilton is known for its tagline, “the ambitious city”. This perhaps reinforces the organizers’ drive in choosing Hamilton for the inaugural presentation of Sing Galing Canada. ⦿

May 2, 2015. The epic battle be-tween the world’s two great fight-ers in Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, will finally decide who is the “king of the ring”, the undisputed “pound for pound “ boxing champion of the world - af-ter a contentious 5 year negotia-tions between two camps.

Dubbed as the fight of the century, its unprecedented worldwide hype has made it the most expensive, lucrative fight promotion in sports

history, dwarfing previous historic fights such as, the Ali-Frazier’s “Thrilla of Manila” and other big sporting events.

The purse alone, Mayweather gets $120 million while Pacquiao $80 million excluding Pay per View earnings and revenues from ticket sales and others could up the total earnings to almost a billion in US dollars.

The most expensive tickets so far are the ringside seats with a price tag amounting to almost $87,000, while the cheapest at $1,500. But this could go up once scalpers and brokers work their way.

The MGM Hotel in Las Vegas, venue of the fight, is fully booked way months before.

The southpaw brawler versus the shrewd defensive counterpuncher

is a very interesting matchup. Ex-perts and analysts alike, predict that for Pacquiao to win, he should knock out Mayweather.

The money man carries a lot of bag of tricks . If the fight goes the full rounds, chances are, Pacquiao would likely lose on points.

MANILA, Philippines – Filipi-no boxing icon Manny Pacquiao has unveiled the music video for his song "Lalaban Ako Para Sa Filipi-no."

Pacquiao directed the video, which features scenes from his training camp for his May 2 fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr., highlights of

his fights, as well as scenes from the recording studio.

Also included in the video are scenes showing some of the tragedies that hit the Philippines recently.

Pacquiao is the underdog against the unbeaten Ameri-can, but has shown nothing but confidence during the lead-up to the fight and says

he is dedicating his perfor-mance to the Filipinos.

The video has been viewed over 600,000 times and shared over 14,000 times on Facebook.

The full lyrics and chords of “Lalaban Ako Para sa Filipino” can be found in the Music Stand column on page 28.

said if this happens, May-weather will get the nods of the judges since he is a big benefactor of the state of Ne-vada pouring in millions in his many fights in Las Vegas.

But this mega fight is also replete with comparison and similarities between the two great fighters.

Although avowed arch ri-vals, they share a common bond in their personal back-grounds:

Here are some facts:

Floyd Mayweather was born in Grand Rapids Michigan as Floyd Joy Sinclair, whose father Floyd Sr. was a for-mer welterweight contend-er and fought hall of famed Sugar Ray Leonard.

The older Mayweather spent jail time on drug deal-ing so the chore of training the young Floyd fell on un-

cle Roger Mayweather.

Floyd grew up poor in New Jersey where he described living conditions as "sometimes we have no electricity."

His mother was also addict-ed to drugs.

"When people see what I have now, they have no idea of where I came from," Floyd said.

Pacquiao, as well know, also grew up poor in Bukidnon, then in Gen Santos (Cotabato).

His parents were also sepa-rated. Like Mayweather, he had a big brood and spent time doing odd jobs before moving to Manila to try his luck in boxing. And the rest is, of course, history

But whatever the outcome of this "Fight of the Centu-ry", both will emerge as two great fighters of their gener-ation. ⦿

Homeland to secure Pacman megafight

MANILA, Philippines - They’re throwing a heavy security blanket on this super fight.

The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security will be on top of the situation when boxing superstars Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao collide at the MGM Grand on May 2.

They will make sure nothing untoward hap-pens. No stone will be left unturned. No bag, no package will be left unchecked, unattend-ed.

Security will be extra tight in and around the MGM before, during and after the fight. Bomb-sniffing dogs will be moving around.

“What I learned the other day is that the

Homeland Security and the FBI will be in charge of security while we’re in Vegas,” Pacquiao’s chief adviser, Mike Koncz, told The STAR yesterday.

“It’s not only for the fighters but for the event itself. They’re treating this as THE event and not just a regular boxing match,” he said.

Koncz explained that in any big event in the United States, whether it’s in politics, sports or entertainment, the FBI and the Homeland Security steps into the picture.

“Anytime you have a huge event like that there are potential problems that’s why

CBCP says no to gay Santacruzan

Manila Feedback

MANILA, Philippines - The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philip-pines (CBCP) yesterday expressed opposition to gays joining the San-tacruzan and Flores de Mayo.

CBCP Public Affairs Committee exec-utive secretary Fr. Jerome Secillano said the faithful should not turn the Flores de Mayo and Santacruzan into a beauty pageant, a fashion show or any form of entertainment because the activities have religious roots.

Flores de Mayo, or the Flowers of May, is a month-long expression of devotion to the Virgin Mary. The Santacruzan is a religious proces-sion held on the last day of the Flo-res de Mayo in honor of Queen Hele-na of Constantinople and Constan-tine the Great for finding the Holy Cross in Jerusalem.

Secillano advised the faithful to stage the Santacruzan in a simple manner.

“There are instances that they make it appear like a beauty pageant and they would involve the gays, so it loses the spirit of the celebration,” the priest said in an interview over the Church-run Radio Veritas.

“Let us maintain the sacredness and dignity during these celebrations. It is all about Mary, it’s all about how are we going to give our reverence to the Blessed Virgin Mary. That is why we should not make a mockery of this activity,” he added.

He also said that Flores de Mayo and Santacruzan should be opportuni-ties for catechism, learning the im-portance of praying and nurturing devotion to Mother Mary. Evelyn Macairan/Philstar.com

fighter Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 2.

President Pnoy, as he is popularly called, will first meet with Prime Minister Stephen Harper in Ottawa, May 8 and the next day will make a “parachute visit” to Toronto where a sizeable Filipino community resides. An estimated 200,000 live and work in the Greater Toronto area (GTA).

In a meeting between Toronto com-munity leaders and the consulate general officials held April 18, it was revealed that Pres. Pnoy wants to hold a dialogue with the community with PM Harper also expressing in-terest in joining the meeting.

The prime minister’s party is facing an election come October this year and is obviously seeking the Filipino-Canadian support and votes.

The consulate asked community leaders to come up with a crowd of at least 10,000 for this dialogue but this early, some sectors

and critics have branded the re-quest as “Hakot mentality”, a term made popular or notorious during the Marcos time where crowds were herded, bussed and fed (and also paid) to create the impression of a huge attendance and public ac-ceptance.

The Canada trip is Pres. Pnoy’s 45th foreign trip and may be one of the last before his term ends in July 2016.

More recently, the president’s ac-ceptance and satisfactory level in surveys suffered a nosedive after the infamous Mamasapano massa-cre of January 25 where some 44 elite police commandos were killed in their chase of an international terrorist. ⦿

We have a phrase for it: “Malabo na!” (Hope dims).

70,000 temporary foreign workers (TFWs) in Canada have started to depart after their tenure under the so-called 4 and 4 program has expired.

Among them are an estimated 8,000 Filipinos who have toiled under the program and stand no chance of being permanent residents or perhaps Canadian citizens.

Under the 4 and 4 program, TFWs are allowed to work for a period of four years but have to leave after that agreed expiry date. They also cannot return to Canada within four years.

But others who were lucky enough to apply as either live in caregivers or those who applied for permanent resi-dence under the federal government exemption rule were allowed to stay but there were only a few.

Most of them who filed their applications were overtaken by the slow process due to a big backlog, forcing them to return home and abandon their applications.

Unless changes or reforms in the programs are instituted, TFWs, who provide much needed labor eschewed or avoided by most Canadians, will never have the oppor-tunity to realize their so-called “Canadian dream” of a good life.

To complicate matters, the path to permanent residency and ultimately to Canadian citizenship is littered with barriers among them, the new and rigid citizenship tests, (75% score required to pass test from the previous 60%) expensive processing fees (from the previous $100-the present $530). Add to this, the so-called “Right to Citi-zenship” fee of an additional $100 to actually become a Canadian citizen.

Is Canadian citizenship becoming a rarity? What hap-pened to the compassionate approach?

According to a recent study, the percentage of permanent residents who acquired Canadian citizenship has de-creased in the last 14 years or so and continues to drop. ⦿

ROADBLOCKS TO PERMANENT RESIDENCY OR CITIZENSHIP

namely, Danny Domo, Joseph Franco and Pete Torralba tried to pacify Deocareza but he continued to show violent attitudes.

In fact, Deocareza was one of the directors of Philcomcen, which successfully organized the first ever Filipino street festival called “Taste of Ma-nila” held last August 2014 in the Bathurst-Wilson area, where most Filipinos live and gravitate.

But in January this year, De-ocareza quit for unknown reasons but remained in good terms with Mangante, even joining him on a trip to the Philippines sponsored by the Philippine Consulate of Toronto.

Oh by the way, Deocareza runs a highly lucrative photo and fingerprinting business for NBI clearance applicants near the consulate premises along Eglinton. They facili-tate a faster mode of getting your NBI clearance than the consulate.

This practice is legal and above board. Matter of fact, Rolly Mangante holds a li-cense as part of Deocareza’s business, called Gino-Solutions.

The business enabled him to buy a condo and live a com-fortable life, according to Mangante.

Deocareza’s partner or wife, Joanna Corpuz, even bragged in a Facebook posting that what the detractors of her partner Deocareza “earns in a year, they can earn within a month,” perhaps implying or emphasizing how awash they are with money.

But let’s leave them to their own fantasies or delusions, they may be true or fairy tales.

But according to Mangante, he suspects that the real rea-son why Eugene went on a rampage or flew on a rage was that he felt his business was being threatened by an-other Philcomcen director, Bong Capitin, who put up a similar photo and finger-printing business, ABC, lo-cated in the same building where the consulate is.

Of course, he might have suspected that Mangante, being a consulate insider, had a hand on this and has turned up against him in fa-vour of Capitin, who runs several businesses that in-clude the popular Cusina lounge.

But I will leave the business competition among them-selves. That is the least of me and my media col-leagues’ problem.

My biggest concern is how Eugene Deocareza had the gall to declare, “Pababagsakin ko kayo. Me-dia ako!”

He used the name of the me-dia to threaten and harass members of a community organization, the Philcomcen to get back at his business competitors and for his own selfish motives.

To set the record straight, in my two terms as President of the Philippine Press Club of Ontario (PPCO), I, along with the more experienced journalists, exerted efforts to train the members on proto-cols and professionalism to maintain the integrity of the organization.

My policy was to maintain good relationships with the community and not to har-ass specially the business and community organiza-tions.

Mr. Deocareza’s alleged ac-tions, were one of unbecom-ing, abuse and misuse of the power of media, that is, if he is really a true media practi-tioner. And I doubt it.

My appeal to the community, please be wary and beware of “fake journalists”or “pseudo-media persons” who use organizations like the PPCO as a springboard to their selfish motives and agenda.

Mr. Deocareza, as we go to print, may be possibly facing several criminal charges in-cluding one that may be filed against him by a well-respected Toronto lawyer who retains big and respect-able clients around Toronto.

* As of press time, a letter of summons issued by the po-lice was reportedly sent to Deocareza to respond within 10 days in connection with the alleged March 27 inci-dent.

And may I remind my for-mer colleagues at the PPCO to please police your ranks and screen future members carefully.

The media is mandated to serve the community, up-hold the truth and never to intimidate anybody through the power of the pen.

Mr. Deocareza’s alleged un-warranted actions has put a blemish on the community media’s reputation and I, as well as my colleagues who represent the legitimate and working media/journalists, won’t allow this to happen.

And we hope Mr Deocareza can shed light on this unfor-tunate incident. We will be listening. ⦿

WAVES FROM HOME

Summer has descended on our shores. And the madness that go with the vacation fever which grip us every time this season comes was presaged by two storms that were, thank God, weakened and chastised by the roasting heat in our area of the Pacific Ocean before they can do havoc in our islands.

Set on the loose, the vacation-ing herds seeking peace and relief from stress, boredom and chronic social, economic and political issues that are part of our everyday lives, stampede on the way to beach resorts and mountain hideaways near and far causing horrendous traffic everywhere people con-verge on these shores for the summer break.

In this hot season, blood pres-sures are rising and so are mar-ket and fuel prices, water and power rates, and of course, the decibels in the still rampaging debates on the fate of the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) and that of peace in Mindanao.

*****

Swearing he told the truth on the bungled counter-terrorism operation in Mamasapano, Maguindanao before the gradu-

ating cadets of the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) in Cavite last March 26, President Aquino took respon-sibility for the mission that claimed the lives of 44 Special Action Force (SAF) commandos as his last statement on the issue. No “I am sorry.”

The President’s net satisfaction rating has been plummeting downwards and still no apolo-gy which to so many people would mean so much to temper the raw emotions that continue to bristle the public most espe-cially the grieving families of the massacred SAF members.

Mr. Aquino must have loved the Filipino people so much. As the song from the movie Love Story goes, “love means you never have to say you’re sor-ry…”?

*****

The full disclosure of the Ma-masapano massacre and the dubious connections of the Mo-ro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) and other armed groups in the inci-dent remain to be the crux of the matter in the on-going ex-tended hearings in Congress on

the fate of the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) and the peace process in Mindanao.

At this point, Congress and many sectors in civil society are of the mindset that the BBL should not be rushed and should be thoroughly looked into under the microscope of public opinion and the people’s understanding of the content and consequences of the pro-posed law.

The government warns of im-minent chaos as chief peace negotiator Miriam Coronel-Ferrer pointed out to media of a “very bloody war” in the fail-ure of the peace process and BBL’s passage. The president earlier referred to more “body bags” count, and later during the 73rd “Araw ng Kagitingan commemorative rites in Bataan last April 9, of a World War II scenario in Mindanao in the event of the said law’s disap-proval.

Many mindful Filipinos are wary of the BBL “railroading” and negative reactions to this border on civil unrest. From profound to pedestrian, ques-tions on the peace process and the BBL are now floating or

flying this summer. Who bene-fits really and finally from the Bangsamoro Basic Law: the sovereign Filipino people, our Muslim Filipino brothers and other indigenous peoples in Min-danao? What is the role and the agenda of Malaysia in this ren-dezvous for peace and stability of the Bangsamoro region? Is the government dealing with the right party and legitimate beneficiaries of this process?

Who is Mohagher Iqbal? Read-ing former DILG Secretary Ra-fael Alunan’s social media ac-count, we learned that our gov-ernment chief peace negotiator Miriam Coronel-Ferrer has been dealing with her MILF counterpart in the peace talks as an A.K.A., a John Doe and reportedly a holder of a Malay-sian passport at that!

What? We are overwhelmed. And we squirm. Nom de guerre or whatsoever, the Filipino people has the right to be in-formed, given time to evaluate and discern the benefits as well as implications of the BBL and know fully well the true identi-ty of the dramatis personae we are playing with here. The BBL should not be rammed down

our throats just like that and because of a deadline. We can hardly regurgitate with so many natural and man-made disasters in this country.

*****

The National Peace Council members that will look into the peace process and the Bang-samoro Basic Law have been named by President Aquino. Its members are Manila Archbish-op Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle, former Supreme Court chief justice Hilario Davide, Jr., busi-ness tycoon Jaime Augusto Zo-bel de Ayala, former ambassa-dor Howard Dee, and youth leader Rohaniza Sumndad-Usman.

They all volunteered to the call of the President for a separate and independent council that will not “supplant Congress in any way to be able to contrib-ute to the national discussions on the BBL.”

The peace council will sit down and discuss the merits of the BBL, make recommendations on how it can be improved which will later be submitted as a report.

Around 70,000 temporary workers in Canada face deportation FILIPINOS COULD BE HARD HIT

The Origami through Rappler

Under the controversial “4 and 4 rule,” temporary foreign workers who have been working for Canada for four years or more must leave the country

TORONTO, Canada – Migrant workers and advocates staged rallies across Canada on March 29 and 30 to call for a moratorium on the four-year employment limit for temporary foreign workers, which takes effect April 1. They also called on Ottawa to grant permanent resident status to migrant workers.

Under the controversial “4 and 4 rule,” introduced April 1, 2011, temporary foreign workers who have been working for Canada for four years or more must leave the country.

They are barred from return-ing to work here for another four years. Under previous regulations, workers could simply reapply for another work permit to continue their employment.

Among those affected by the new ruling, which has been described by its critics as “unjust,” are low-skilled workers employed in indus-tries such as agriculture, fish-ing, food and beverage, retail, construction and personal services, including caregiv-ers.

“Immigration officials are unable to provide statistics on the number of migrant workers due for removals as of April 1 due to time re-straints, but advocacy groups estimate there could be as many as 70,000 whose time-limited work permits will expire this year,” according to the Toronto Star.

Concerns have been raised that some workers whose visas have lapsed may simply decide to become undocu-mented and work in the un-derground economy.

Currently, about 330,000 live and work under the tempo-rary foreign worker program (TFWP), a number that has tripled in the last 10 years. Workers -– many of whom are employed in Ontario, Al-berta and British Columbia – come from more than 50 countries, including devel-oped nations. The top 10 countries include the Philip-pines, Mexico, U.S., Jamaica, India, Guatemala, U.K., France, Korea and Ireland, according to Statistics Cana-da.

Exodus

“Many of the people who are being forcibly uprooted on April 1 have lived in the country for longer than four years. They have families, friends, and relationships,” said a statement by Liza Draman from the Caregivers Action Centre (CAC). “Workers already face abuse from employers and recruit-ers because of bad provincial and federal laws, pulling them away from their com-munities on top of that is un-just, inhumane and arbi-trary.”

Live-in caregivers are among those likely to be affected by the ruling, said CAC. There are about 70,000 workers classified as live-in caregivers in Canada, the majority of whom are from the Philip-pines and Caribbean nations.

Caregivers can apply for per-manent status after two to three years, but the process has normally taken up to three years and approval hinges on a number of fac-tors.

Key points on Bangsamoro peace pact

MANILA - The Moro Islamic Liberation Front ended four decades of armed struggle in the Philippines on Thursday when it signed a peace pact with the government.

Here are key facts on the MILF and the peace deal:

MILF: The MILF has about 10,000 armed followers, ac-cording to the military, which makes it easily the biggest Muslim rebel group in the Philippines.

It has long fought for an in-dependent homeland for the nation's Muslim minority to be carved out of the south-ern Philippines.

It split in the 1970s from the-then main rebel group, the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF). The MNLF had agreed to autonomy, and founding MILF leader Hashim Salamat was intent on fighting for independ-ence. Internal rivalries were another reason for the split.

PEACE PACT: TITLE: Called the "Comprehensive Agree-ment on the Bangsamoro". The Bangsamoro refers to people who at the time of Spanish conquest and colo-nisation were considered natives or original inhabit-

ants of the southern Philip-pines. Their descendants and spouses are recognised as Bangsamoro people.

Bangsa is a local word for nation. Moro derives from the term "Moors" used by Spanish colonialists to refer to Muslims.

AUTONOMY: The MILF drops its claims for a sepa-rate state in the southern region of Mindanao and set-tles for parliamentary self-rule in the Bangsamoro au-tonomous region. This will be established by 2016. The Bangsamoro will replace another Muslim autono-mous region that was bro-kered in the 1990s with the MNLF, which the govern-ment says has failed.

DISARMAMENT: The MILF will "gradually" decommis-sion its forces and put the weapons "beyond use". A local police force will as-sume law enforcement func-tions from the Philippine police and military.

POWERS: The Philippine government will retain ex-clusive powers on defence, foreign policy, currency and citizenship matters.

government announced chang-es to the program, making it optional for caregivers to live with their employers; it also promised to bring the backlog of 60,000 applications for per-manent residence down to zero in two years. Caregivers will still wait for two years before they can file for permanent resident status, but Immigra-tion Minister Chris Alexander said applications would be pro-cessed within six months.

In Toronto, amid blustery spring winds, workers and their supporters staged a rally at the Citizenship and Immigra-tion Canada’s headquarters on St. Clair East. They planted seedlings symbolizing that mi-grant workers have established roots in their communities.

Rhea, a member of Anakbayan Toronto, a local Filipino youth organization, said she came out to support her “kababayans” (fellow Filipinos) who came to Canada to support their families and would have no jobs waiting for them back home.

Rallies were also held in Mon-treal, Vancouver, and in other cities in Ontario, including Guelph, Hamilton, St. Cath-arines and Peterborough.

'Nonesense ruling'

Syed Hussan of the Migrant Workers Alliance for Change said the ruling does not make

sense. “It doesn’t serve any-one’s purpose to remove a trained workforce, and replace it with new workers that are less aware of their rights,” he said in a statement.

“Why does holding down a job for four years result in depor-tation? Our communities need migrant workers to have per-manent status. This mass de-portation is classic economic mismanagement and is frankly irrational.”

Ottawa cited a need to “protect the Canadian labour market” as a reason for revising the TFWP. The program was only meant to address temporary labour shortages, the government said, adding that the new rule was also meant to encourage employers and their workers to seek pathways to permanent residence. Critics have noted, however, that Canada’s current immigration laws favor highly skilled workers, not low-skilled, low-wage workers.

Employers have also argued that they have had to hire tem-porary foreign workers be-cause low-wage, low-skilled jobs do not attract Canadians, despite the fact that more than 1.4 million are jobless.

Canada’s unemployment rate – currently 6.7 per cent -– is pro-jected to increase following the slump in oil prices. As of Febru-ary, at least 14,000 oil industry workers from Alberta and 3,000 from Newfoundland and Labrador lost their jobs, re-ported The Globe and Mail.

Dan Kelly, president of the Ca-nadian Federation of Inde-pendent Business (CFIB) told The Canadian Press that new entrants to the labour market are not interested in menial, low-wage, entry-level jobs. “We have one of the highest post-secondary education attain-ment levels in the industrial-ized world,” he said.

Some businesses, including McDonald’s, are, however, un-der federal investigation over possible abuses of the pro-gram, following reports of lo-cals being turned away from jobs.

Under federal law, businesses cannot hire temporary foreign workers if there are qualified Canadians available for jobs. Some economists say some industries prefer to hire tem-porary foreign workers be-cause they are more compliant and are more likely to stay in the job than students or new graduates.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) has been critical of the program, accus-ing employers and provincial governments of using it to “drive down wages, worsen working conditions, and under-mine unions.” In October, fol-lowing reports that some tem-porary foreign workers were receiving 15 per cent less than the median wage, the govern-ment required employers to pay them the prevailing wage.

CUPE also noted that these

“It’s like the Super Bowl which is regulated security wise by the FBI and Home-land Security,” he said.

The FBI has been around for a century to serve the dual function of an intelligence agency and a federal law enforcement organization, men and women in dark suits and nylon jackets bearing the FBI colors.

The Homeland Security was created after the September 11 attacks “to ensure a homeland that is safe, se-cure and resilient against terrorism and other haz-ards.”

On fight night, the MGM Grand will be the hottest place on earth.

It’s the place to be seen.

“You will see hard-core box-ing fans but you’re gonna have people there that are socialites, rich that don’t really follow boxing but who will be there for the event,” said Koncz.

But not every Tom, Dick and Harry will be there because they can’t afford to be there.

Tickets to the fight, the big-gest in boxing history, are more expensive than gold.

The cheapest tickets have a face value of $1,500 (roughly P66,000) while the most expensive ones are at $7,500 (roughly P330,000).

In previous Pacquiao fights, the best tickets sold for $1,500.

But on the Internet, ringside seats for May 2 are now be-ing sold for $87,000 each (roughly P3.5 million), which is bigger than the lifetime savings of an ordi-nary Filipino.

Pacquiao’s American pro-moter, Bob Arum, was astounded by the ticket prices on the Internet. He said he’d received offers of around $80,000 for his seat to the fight.

“Anybody who’s willing to pay $200,000 can have my seat,” he told The STAR in jest during a recent chat.

Mayweather has majority control over the tickets. And this time, Pacquiao will have in his hands just enough tickets for his family and closest friends.

“Pasensiya na muna (I beg for your understanding),” Pacquiao told his friends who won’t get any tickets for the fight. ⦿

Millions of dollars in unclaimed benefits Harper Government looking for hundreds of thousands of families not currently registered for the enhanced child care benefit

An estimated 200,000 fami-lies with children are eligi-ble to receive money under the Harper Government’s proposed enhanced Univer-sal Child Care Benefit (UCCB), but are at risk of not receiving the benefit unless they apply. In Toron-to, for example, there are an estimated 32,000 fami-lies who are not registered. The Honourable Pierre Poi-lievre, Minister of Employ-ment and Social Develop-ment, today asked for help from the media and the public to encourage fami-lies to apply for the benefit.

The majority of families with children, approximate-ly 3.8 million, are known and will automatically re-ceive the enhanced UCCB or be contacted by the Gov-ernment to confirm their information. However, many eligible families are not currently captured by the Government’s UCCB system and may miss out on receiving money that is owed to them unless they

apply. In 2015 alone, this represents potentially mil-lions of dollars in un-claimed benefits.

Under the proposed en-hancements to the UCCB, families would receive al-most $2,000 per year for each child under 6 and $720 per year for each child aged 6 through 17. The new benefit amounts would be retroactive to January 1, 2015 and be reflected in monthly payments to fami-lies in July 2015. The pro-posed enhancements to the UCCB are expected to more than double the number of families that benefit from 1.6 million to more than 4 million.

If your family is not cur-rently receiving the UCCB, has never received the UCCB, or has never applied for the Canada Child Tax Benefit and you still have children under 18 in your care, please go to www.canada.ca/taxsavings in order to find out how you can apply.

Quick Facts All families with children will benefit from the new Family Tax Cuts and Bene-fits, which includes the Family Tax Cut, and en-hancements to the UCCB, Child Care Expense Deduc-tion and the Children’s Fit-ness Tax Credit.

Combined with tax relief introduced by the Govern-ment of Canada since 2006, a typical family of four can receive up to $6,600 in tax relief and enhanced bene-fits in 2015.

Low- and middle-income families will receive two-thirds of the overall bene-fits provided by the Gov-ernment of Canada’s new family measures.

The Family Tax Cut will eliminate or significantly reduce the difference in the federal tax payable by a one-earner couple relative to a two-earner couple with a similar family income

You can now apply for NBI clearance online

MANILA, Philippines – Start-ing Wednesday, April 1, the National Bureau of Investiga-tion will no longer entertain walk-ins as it implements a fully online application pro-cess for NBI clearance.

“We are rolling out this new procedure to help our broth-ers and sisters get their clear-ances fast and in a most con-venient way. Almost all of us are using the Internet, we better make use of them in transacting business with the NBI,” said NBI spokesman Nick Suarez said on Monday, March 30.

The registration and appoint-ment system for the NBI clearance will all be done online nationwide. Appli-cants may accomplish the

application form at www.doj.gov.ph/nbi, www.nbi.gov.ph, and clear-ance.nbi.gov.ph.

"With the implementation of the new NBI system, we shall continue to roll out and im-plement solutions to progres-sively eliminate queues and simplify processes," Suarez said.

After registering online, ap-plicants may proceed to any of the 55 NBI sites nation-wide for the payment and biometric enrollment before their their clearance is re-leased.

"They can only go to the NBI clearance sites on the sched-uled date they have chosen when they filled up their forms online," Suarez said.

When the system had a soft launch last January 2, at least 29 sites nationwide went online.

"The new clearance system provides a more reliable plat-form for the efficient pro-cessing of applicants' infor-mation. With the improved search engine and query da-tabase, the accurate releasing of clearances will be faster," said Justice Secretary Leila de Lima in February.

This is a first in the history of the [justice] department and of the NBI. Our very own clearance system that was internally developed as part of our flagship National Jus-tice Information System Pro-ject," De Lima said. –

ISLAMIC LAW: The region will not be an Islamic state, rather a secular govern-ment. Sharia law will apply only to Muslims and only for civil cases, not for criminal offences. All residents are guaranteed basic rights to life, movement, privacy, and freedom of religion and speech.

TERRITORY: To cover five provinces, plus two cities, six towns and 39 villages in the south, comprising about 10 percent of the Philip-pines' total land area.

ENABLING LAW: Philippine President Benigno Aquino

will seek to steer through parliament a "Bangsamoro Basic Law" for the autono-mous region by the end of this year.

PLEBISCITE: People living in areas to be included in the autonomous region will need to ratify the law in a plebiscite to be held in 2015.

TRANSITIONAL AUTHORI-TY: After the basic law is approved and ratified by the plebiscite, a 15-member "Bangsamoro Transition Authority" will govern the region until a regional par-liament is elected. Aquino appoints the members of the transitional authority, but the MILF will have a ma-jority and the chairman.

ELECTIONS: A regional par-liament, expected to have 50 seats, is to be elected in con-junction with national elec-tions in May 2016.

KEY POINTS IN BANGSAMORO

We shall be following the delib-erations of the National Peace Council and hope they can con-tribute to the widest possible dissemination of information on the peace process and the BBL believing they are mindful men and women of integrity, objectivity and independence who can further enlighten the Filipino people with regards to the proposed law that would form the legal basis for creation of an autonomous Bangsamoro entity in Mindanao.

Anger and hatred and division will not bring us anywhere close to our quest for peace and stability in that part of our country. Neither noise nor bel-ligerent bravado will lead us in that direction. It is enlighten-ment that will guide us on the right road and the right action to reach that goal.

Four centuries ago Jingnuo, a Chan Buddhist nun, said: “If you bring to everything an enlight-ened mind, you won’t get lost.”

During Lent, we chose to stay closer to home than venture into the madness of summer where the herds on hyperac-

tive vacation-mode are crush-ing each other. Surfing the net and drowning ourselves on the waves of words of a few books that have been shelved for quite some time while intermit-tently watching old religious-themed, re-run movies on TV made up for our multi-tasking retreat and mindful meditation.

In our real-time chaos, mindful-ness, according to Joseph Gold-stein (Three Means of Peace),“is the key to these pre-sent moments… and without it, we simply stay lost in the wan-derings of our minds.”

As opposed to mindlessness, “mindfulness is the quality and power of mind that is aware of what is happening – without judgment and without interfer-ence.”

Mindfully looking into the is-sues, crises and circumstances that shape our views of society as they play out on the local and global scenes through me-dia and the internet, we can find our own experience and expression of peace and our relationship with the rest of humanity and the environment we live in.

We relate to Mindanao as we relate to our next-door neigh-bors as well as close families and friends in the same sense

in the search for peace. With clear and open mind and sin-cere belief on what is good and correct, the right decisions and actions can be achieved.

*****

Back to this season, a “summer vacation glitch” affirming that despite our many problems here at home, it’s really “more fun in the Philippines,” and we are referring to the “yaya meal” that went viral and fodder of news this time of the year.

Actress, fashion designer and model Maggie Wilson-Consunji shared via social media a per-sonal incident in the exclusive and members-only Balesin Is-land Club in Quezon Province (Senator Chiz Escudero and actress Heart Evangelista were married there a few months ago). It was a simple case of “I want that too” when her moth-er ordered the same special “adobo” fare served to the nan-ny of Ms. Maggie’s child only to be refused so politely because it is for “yaya meal” only. We can understand and cannot fault Maggie Wilson-Consunji’s sensitivity in reacting to that and reporting it in her social media account.

“That’s blatant discrimination”, the people cried and it’s now news history.

Balesin management replied that at their Club, if guests and members choose to have the Club serve the “yaya” tender-loin steak and lobster thermi-dor, (they) will gladly serve it to the “yaya” which complicat-ed the issue further and more angry voices to join the dissing. For us here “tambays” (regular hangers-on) at our favorite, popularly cool and undiscrimi-nating coffee shop, it was an-other diversion for intellectual-and-civil-rights dissection.

The hair-splitting is still going on. But belonging to the caste of “desadobosabos”, who eat adobo only once in a month (pork and chicken are among the markets’ price-rising stars), we can just sigh. Yayas are no longer that way below the pecking order. And we believe they’re now called child care-givers here and governess in other parts of the world. And yes, I am sure they now can eat cake and drink champagne too.

*****

In A New Approach to Global Problems, the Dalai Lama said: “…of the many problems we face today, some are natural calamities which must be ac-cepted with equanimity. Oth-ers… are of our own making created by misunderstanding and can be corrected. One such

type arises from the conflict of ideologies, political or religious, when people fight each other for petty ends, losing sight of the basic humanity that binds us all together as a single hu-man family. We must remem-ber that the different religions, ideologies and political systems of the world are meant for hu-man beings to achieve happi-ness. We must not lose sight of this fundamental goal and at no time should we place means above end, the supremacy of humanity over matter and ide-ology must always be main-tained.”

Untold Story of Manny Pacquiao Revealed in "Kid Kulafu"

TFC@theMovies brings Filipino champ's inspiring biopic to US and Canada theaters starting April 24

REDWOOD SHORES, CA, April 15,

2015 –With a little over two weeks to

go, interest in the May 2 welterweight

world championship unification bout

on May 2 between Floyd Mayweath-

er, Jr. andManny Pacquiao has

reached fever pitch with traditional

and social media churning out story

after story about the boxers' training,

fight analysis and predictions, betting

odds, trivia, celebrity gym visits, comic

relief and everything else under the

sun that could be said about what is

billed as the "Fight of the Century".

But as far as beloved Filipino boxing

icon Manny Pacquiao, one of the pro-

tagonists of this unfolding real-life

sports drama, is concerned - even with

the wealth of information that has

been shown, said and written about

him - none goes as deeply into the be-

ginnings of his legendary career as

ABS-CBN Star Cinema and Ten17 Pro-

ductions' Kid Kulafu, a film helmed by

well-known commercial and film di-

rector Paul Soriano from the screen-

play of Froi Medina that documents

the early years of Pacquiao as a strug-

gling amateur and pro boxer, how he

tried to make ends meet as a teenager

and how his uncle got him into the

sport.

TFC@theMovies gives all boxing fans

in the U.S. and Canada the chance to

see the origins of the Filipino boxing

legend when Kid Kulafu opens in U.S.

and Canada theaters on April 24.

The truth is Manny Pacquiao, the

world's only boxing champion in eight

divisions, almost never happened. The

scrawny kid from Kibawe, Bukidnon

stood no chance against the obstacles

life threw at him, until he started

punching down banana trees, thanks

to the goading of his uncle, Sardo

Dapidran, played by award-winning

actor Cesar Montano.

The film has premiered in the Philip-

pines on April 15 and Arvin Mendoza

of Inquirer.net came in with an early

review: "Watching director Paul So-

riano’s latest opus Kid Kulafu is like

being hit squarely in the face by Manny

Pacquiao’s lethal one-two punch com-

bination. Soriano’s treatment of the

film is nothing less than raw and un-

tamed, humanizing the characters to

When the Titanic began to sink on April 15, 1912, Father Thomas Byles had two op-portunities to board a life-boat.

But he forewent those oppor-tunities, according to passen-gers aboard the sinking ocean liner, in order to hear confessions and offer conso-lation and prayers with those who were trapped aboard.

Now, a priest at the former church of Fr. Byles in Eng-land is asking that his beatifi-cation cause be opened.

Some 1,500 people died when the Titanic hit an ice-berg and sank in the Atlantic Ocean in 1912. Believed at the time to be “unsinkable,” the ship lacked adequate life-boats for all the passengers on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City.

Fr. Byles was traveling on the Titanic to preside at his brother’s wedding in New York. The 42-year-old British priest had been ordained in Rome 10 years prior and had served as a parish priest at

Saint Helen’s Church in Essex since 1905.

Miss Agnes McCoy, a third class passenger and survivor of the Titanic, said Fr. Byles had been on the ship, hearing confessions, praying with passengers and giving his blessing as the vessel sank.

McCoy’s testimony, and that of other passengers onboard, has been collected at www.fatherbyles.com.

Helen Mary Mocklare, anoth-er third class passenger, of-fered more details about the

final hours of the priest’s life.

“When the crash came we were thrown from our berths ... We saw before us, coming down the passage-way, with his hand uplifted, Father Byles,” she recalled. “We knew him because he had visited us several times on board and celebrated Mass for us that very morn-ing.”

“'Be calm, my good people,' he said, and then he went about the steerage giving ab-solution and blessings...”

Mocklare continued: “A few around us became very excit-ed and then it was that the priest again raised his hand and instantly they were calm once more. The passengers were immediately impressed by the absolute self-control of the priest.”

She recounted that a sailor “warned the priest of his dan-ger and begged him to board

a boat.” Although the sailor was anxious to help him, the priest twice refused to leave.

“Fr. Byles could have been saved, but he would not leave while one (passenger) was left and the sailor's entreaties were not heeded,” Mocklare recounted. “After I got in the boat, which was the last one to leave, and we were slowly going further away from the ship, I could hear distinctly the voice of the priest and the responses to his prayers.”

More than a century later, Father Graham Smith – the current priest at Fr. Byles’ former parish of Saint Helen’s – is the promoter for opening his cause for beatifi-cation.

In a statement to the BBC, Fr. Smith announced the begin-ning of the process seeking the canonization of his pre-decessor, whom he considers to be “an extraordinary man

who gave his life for others.”

Fr. Smith said that in the local community, “We are hoping and praying that he will be recognized as one of the saints within our canon.”

The canonization process first requires that the person in question be found to have lived the Christian virtues to a heroic degree. A miracle attributed to the intercession of the individual must then be approved, for the title of “Blessed” to be bestowed.

Once beatified, another mira-cle due to the intercession of Fr. Byles would need to be approved, for him to be de-clared a saint.

“We hope people around the world will pray to him if they are in need and, if a miracle occurs, then beatification and then canonization can go for-ward,” Fr. Smith said. CNA

Senators not in favor of legalizing divorce in the Philippines By:Jelly F. Musico, Philippine News Agency

MANILA, Philippines -- Senators have rejected a proposal to legalize divorce in the Philippines despite surveys showing majority of Filipi-nos agreed to legalize "irreconcilably separated" couples.

Senator Serge Osmen a III said he will also reject a divorce law for fear that his wife, Bettina Lopez, may use it against him.

“I cannot favor a divorce law. My wife might use that against me,” Osmen a said in a text message on Tuesday.

Acting Senate minority leader Vi-cente Sotto III said any proposal to legalize divorce will unlikely pass both in the Senate and the House of Representatives which remains dominated by male lawmakers.

“That’s unlikely. In the Lower

House, lawmakers there might face their wife’s fury if they try to pass it,” Sotto said, adding that he will personally reject the proposal.

Senator Nancy Binay, one of the only five lady senators, said the government should find ways to strengthen and empower the Filipi-no families instead of legalizing di-vorce in the country.

“Besides, there is already legal rem-edy, which is annulment, for cou-ples who have problems,” Binay said.

Senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said there is no reason for him to sup-port the divorce legalization.

“No. I love my wife. I do not want to divorce her,” Marcos said in a text message.

Marcos is married to Louise Cacho Araneta. They have three sons -- Ferdinand Alexander III, Joseph Simon and William Vincent.

On the other hand, Senator Pia Cay-etano said she is open to discuss the divorce law.

“I am of the belief that there is nothing to be proud about (the fact) we are the only country in the world that still doesn’t have di-vorce, that we are self-suffering, that we allow women, or men, for that matter, to stay in horrible rela-tionships and possibly not even be good parents to their children, simply because our laws does not recognize they should live separate lives,” Cayetano said in an inter-view with reporters.

Cayetano is the chairperson of the Senate committee on youth, wom-en and family relations.

A recent survey by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) showed that 60 percent or three out of five Filipinos are in favor of a divorce law while 29 percent disagreed and the remaining 11 percent are unde-cided.

Aside from Vatican City, the Philip-pines is the only country in the world that does not allow divorce.

In 2005, Gabriela Party-list Repre-sentative Liza Maza filed a divorce bill. It was re-filed in August 2010 by Gabriela Women's party-list alt-hough the committee deliberations

started on June 1, 2011. ⦿

An insider report: LIKE WINE, MANNY PACQUIAO GETS BETTER AS HE AGES By Manny Piñol PhilBoxing.com

It was almost 20 years ago when I first met Manny Pacquiao.

I was a new Governor of North Cotabato and Manny was a new world boxing champion having knocked out Thailand's Chatchai Sasakul to win the flyweight crown.

As a true-blue boxing man, I was Manny Pacquiao's fan and somehow, the fact that we have the same name, Emmanuel, and celebrate our birthdays a day apart of each other - his Dec. 17 and mine Dec. 16 - brought us very close together.

By February of 1999, I

staged Manny's first fight after winning the WBC fly-weight title, a 10-round non-title in Kidapawan City, capital of North Cotabato. The unfinished provincial gym was filled to the rafters with a crowd estimated at 20,000.

I was involved in promoting two more of his fights after that, including his one-round demolition of Thailand's Frakhaporb Rak-kiatgym in Davao City on Oct. 26, 2002.

Davao City Mayor Rody Duterte, also a die-hard Pacquiao fan, supported the boxing promotion in the RMC Gym which gave Man-ny his first multi-million purse - P10-M.

As Pacquiao conquered the world of boxing with one sensational victory after another, I was content with watching him from the side-lines.

When he suffered that dev-

astating knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez in their 4th meeting, I was with him in his Gen. Santos City home when almost all of the familiar faces who hovered around him in his moments of glory were no-where to be seen.

Last week, Manny Pacquiao, preparing for the biggest fight of his career which could install him as the greatest boxer of all times, allowed me to watch him in his sparring session at the Wild Card Gym.

I was one of the very few individuals allowed to watch him spar and do drills afterwards to prepare for his mega-million fight against the undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Watching him up close, I could not seem to believe that this fighter who used to rely on just a very strong left to score knockout victo-ries has been transformed

into a thinking fighting ma-chine who gets inside the ring to fight.

I was amazed by his speed and his sleek movements which I believe would give Mayweather the toughest challenge he has ever faced.

Now considered the under-dog against the undefeated American champion, I will not be surprised if Manny Pacquiao scores the biggest upset in his storied boxing career.

But what makes Pacquiao special is not only his in-credible boxing skills but his unparalleled loyalty to peo-ple who helped him on his way up.

On the way out of Wild Card Gym, Manny Pacquiao placed his heavy left arm on my shoulder and said: "My dear long time friend."

Manny Paquiao is like a very rare wine - he gets better as he ages. ⦿

Coffee Can Reduce Cancer Risk Among Excessive Drinkers

As per a detailed analysis published by UK-based World Cancer Research Fund International (WCRF) coffee consumption can reduce the risk of liver can-cer among individuals who have been abusing on alco-hol on a regular basis. The team of researchers worked in collaboration with the American Institute for Cancer Research for Continuous Update Project (CUP) connected to liver cancer cases across the world and their cause.

Regular consumption of coffee is found to reduce the risk of liver cancer.

The research team has ob-served that people who consume alcohol above normal limits or people who are obese have higher risk of liver cancer. The London-based WRCF sug-gests that three or more drinks per day consump-tion of alcohol can lead to higher risk of liver cancer.

Researchers say that with regular coffee intake, the impact of alcohol use seemed nullified. The re-search team couldn’t com-ment on the reason behind the decreased risk of liver cancer with coffee con-sumption. Higher risk of

liver cancer was also found among people who are smokers and have been suf-fering from hepatitis B or C infection.

The report also found that consumption of food that is contaminated by aflatoxins leads to an increase of liver cancer. Aflatoxins are pro-duced by fungi. The food items that can be contami-nated by aflatoxins include peanuts, black pepper, spic-es, dry fruits, cereals and figs.

The study also found a con-nection between consump-tion of fish as well as lower risk of liver cancer.

The report was published this month and is the most systematic as well as rigor-ous analysis of the scientific research projects conduct-ed on liver cancer across the world. The research analyzed 34 studies that involved around 8.2 million people. The total number of liver cancer cases that were analyzed to formulate the research report was twenty four thousand and five hundred. The American Register

Addiction

Computer addiction can be described as the excessive or compulsive use of the computer which persists despite serious negative consequences for personal, social or occupational func-tion. Another clear concep-tualization is made by Block who stated that "Conceptually, the diagnosis is a compulsive-impulsive spectrum disorder that in-volves online and/or offline computer usage and con-sists of at least three sub-types: excessive gaming, sexual preoccupations, and e-mail/text messag-ing". While it was expected that this new type of addic-tion would find a place un-der the compulsive disor-ders in the DSM 5, the cur-rent edition of the Diagnos-tic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, it is still counted as an unofficial dis-order. The concept of Com-puter Addiction is broadly divided in two types, name-ly offline and online Com-puter Addiction. The term offline Computer Addiction is normally used when speaking about excessive gaming behavior, which can both be practiced offline and online. Online computer Ad-diction is also known as Internet addiction and gets in general more atten-tion from scientific research than Offline Computer Ad-diction, mainly because most cases of Computer Ad-diction are related to the excessive use of the inter-net.

Although addiction is usual-ly used to describe sub-stances, addiction can also be used to describe patho-logical Internet use. Experts on Internet addiction have described this syndrome as an individual being intense-ly working on the Internet, prolonged use of the Inter-net, uncontrollable use of

the Internet, unable to use the Internet with efficient time, not being interested in the outside world, not spending time with people from the outside world, and an increase in their loneli-ness and dejec-tion. However, not all people who spend hours each day on the computer are consid-ered addicted. There are many uses for computers and the internet and in many cases, an individual may spend 6 or more hours in a day on the computer but still not be considered an addict. Each individual situation is different and therefore, there is no set number of hours that is (or is not) considered a poten-tial for computer addiction.

Symptoms of Computer Addiction

Having a constant pre-occupation with the com-puter either online or offline

Feeling an intense de-sire to go online, play a com-puter game, or socialize.

Being drawn by the computer as soon as you wake up and before you go to bed

Spending time on the computer despite family functions taking place, spe-cial events, or other activi-ties that you were once hap-py to be a part of

Replacing old hobbies with excessive use of the computer and using the computer as your primary source of entertainment and procrastination

Performing actions on the computer that are out-side the realm of what your original plans were such as shopping online when you should be working or play-ing a game when you should be doing homework

Former child actor and Kid

feels honored to be part of the

world champion's biopic.

"I knew that there were a lot

who auditioned for the role

that's why I was so happy

when I was chosen. Because

I'm really a big fan of

Pacquiao," said Villar who un-

derwent serious boxing train-

ing in preparation for the film.

"Because of Kid Kulafu, I real-

ized that Sir Manny can be a

huge source of inspiration to

kids of today. He's hardwork-

ing, determined to rise above

poverty, and has high respect

for his parents and family,"

shared Villar. "When Sir Manny

stepped into amateur boxing,

his goal was not to win. He

wanted to help provide meals

to his family and make his par-

ents proud of him."

"I completely agree with my

colleague, Paul Soriano, when

he said, that Mayweather will

not define Pacquiao," said ABS-

CBN Global Head of Theatricals

and acclaimed film, TV and

concert director John-D Laza-

tin. "This 110-minute film

which was three years in the

making, including two years of

research and emotional inter-

views with Pacquiao, members

of his family, friends and for-

mer trainers, will show why he

is not only one of the greatest

boxers in history, but also one

of the most inspiring heroes in

the world today."

Most Common Causes for Computer Addiction

anxiety caused by stress at work, relation-ships, financial prob-lems or other sources

depression that leads to computer use to es-cape reality

inactivity and using the

computer instead of working out or other-wise being active

physical illness that pre-vents an individual from leaving the home

boredom and feeling like there is nothing else to do

The most Common types of Computer Addiction

General Computer ad-dictions – this the result of an individual’s desire to play games such as solitaire or other games on the computer and does not generally in-clude internet usage

Internet Addiction – internet addiction is the re-sult of an individual’s desire to spend time online perform-ing any one of a number of tasks in excess. Internet ad-diction has sub-categories that include:

Internet compulsions – these may include compulsive shopping online, compulsive gaming online, compulsive gambling online or compul-

sive stock trading online

Cybersex – this is a com-pulsive use of the internet to participate in internet sex through chat rooms, adult websites, fantasy role playing online or watching pornogra-phy

Social Networking ad-dictions – this is the addic-tion that results when an indi-vidual spends more time so-cializing online than they do socializing with people in real life. These addicts will often find online relationships to be more meaningful than offline relationships.

Treatments for Computer Addiction

Counseling and thera-py – this may entail behavior-al therapy such as CBT which will retrain the mind to per-form different actions when it has certain thoughts. Counsel-ing or therapy can also focus on treating underlying mental health conditions that caused the addiction such as anxiety, depression, social trauma or other conditions

Group Support – many

different options for group or community support are avail-able to assist those who are addicted to computers. Just getting out and interacting with others can be very re-warding to the computer ad-dict.

Changing Interests – one method of getting past a com-puter addiction is to focus on new interests. For instance, a computer user might take part in a new gym member-ship, spend time at the mov-ies with friends or go out for a walk.

If a computer user does feel that he must go onto the computer, consider talking himself out of the computer use unless it is absolutely nec-essary. If he does go on the computer, he must make a plan for what he will do when on the computer, how long it will take and what time you will be off of the computer. Placing these limitations on your computer usage when paired with therapy or coun-seling can lead to recovery from this difficult to cope with addiction.

LBC Express, the leading courier service provider in the Philippines, is introduc-ing LBC VIP (Very Important Padala) in North America and Canada, a menu of add-on services that allows cus-tomers to increase the bene-fits of their existing transac-tions, at a discounted rate.

“At LBC we always look for additional ways to answer to the needs of our custom-ers. We want to give our loy-al customers the options to customize the service we provide them, ” said Hugo Bonilla, president of LBC North America.

For its initial release, the courier service launched the Extra Pack, which allows customers to send a small box for those items that did not fit one regular box with-

out having to fill up another balikbayan box. The Extra Pack also prevents the risk of overstuffed boxes, which increases the risk of the package’s security.

Customers can send a small box (24x18x9) for $25 when sending one regular box. Those sending two regular boxes need to pay only $20 for the small box, while those sending three regular boxes need to pay only $15 for the add-on service.

LBC is offering this service to customers in the United States (excluding Hawaii, Alexandria, and Florida), and customers in British Columbia and Toronto in Canada. The service is ad-vantageous for Filipinos based in the regions who regularly send packages to

their relatives back home. As of 2012, there are 3,494,281 in the USA and 852,401 in Canada.

Other packs such as Security Packs, which will include protective gear and added insurance, and Air Packs, which will focus on air car-go, will be available in LBC’s VIP add-on menu in the fu-ture.

“This add-on service will answer the need for addi-tional space or security or time. We hope to make smiles bigger with LBC VIP,” Bonilla concluded.

ABS-CBN, only media company in FinanceAsia's list of best Philippine companies April 15, 2015 (Quezon City, Philippines) - ABS-CBN Corporation, the country’s leading multimedia company, has been ranked the 3rd best mid-cap (middle capitaliza-tion) company in the Philip-pines in the latest survey of FinanceAsia, one of the most respected finance magazines in the region. It is the only media company in this year’s list.

The rankings are part of the magazine’s “Asia’s Best Com-panies 2015” poll of over 250 portfolio managers and buy-side analysts in the region, or those who identify invest-ment opportunities for Asia’s leading mutual funds, pen-sion funds, trusts, and hedge funds.

ABS-CBN is the only enter-tainment and multimedia company included in the list for the mid-cap (middle capi-talization) category. Security Bank was ranked 3rd equal.

“This recognition is a strong vote of confidence for ABS-CBN and a good indicator that

we are on the right track," said ABS-CBN President and CEO Charo Santos-Concio. “We are indeed honored to be in this prestigious list of Fi-nanceAsia.”

This is FinanceAsia’s 15th year to conduct this survey to find out which publicly listed companies investors consider to be the best-managed in Asia, who the best senior ex-ecutives are, and which com-panies excel in corporate gov-ernance, investor relations, and other key metrics.

Chief Operating Officer Carlo Katigbak stated that the com-pany is encouraged by this recognition and will continue to strive for innovation and excellence.

"We will continue to work hard to ensure that our strat-egies are attuned to techno-logical trends and develop-ments, and that our content remains relevant and sensi-tive to the needs of our vari-ous audiences. This is part of nation-building, of shaping

our culture, to be ‘in the service of the Filipino’,” he said. In 2014, ABS-CBN won a Gold Stevie Award in the “Company of the Year -- Media and Entertainment Company” category at the 11th International Business Awards, while Concio won a Gold Stevie Award in the

“Female Executive of the Year in Asia, Australia, or New Zea-land” category at the prestig-ious Stevie Awards for Wom-en in Business. ABS-CBN also bagged a Grand Stevie Award and the Gold Stevie Award in the “Services Company of the Year” category, while Concio also received the Gold Stevie

Award for the “Woman of the Year” category for all Asia-Pacific nations (except Aus-tralia and South Korea) at the 2014 Asia-Pacific Stevie Awards. ⦿

ABS-CBN LAUNCHES “ISANG BAYAN PARA KAY PACMAN” In his 20-year career as a boxer, Manny Pacquiao fought for Filipinos and they have backed him up, cheer-ing from the sidelines.

ABS-CBN launched the Isang Bayan Para Kay Pacman campaign this week as he nears the biggest fight of his career by far to encourage all Fili-pino supporters to let their strength as a people be felt. It is a call to action to stop from just cheering from the sidelines, to step up to the plate and rally behind the fighting pride of the country.

The movement aims to show the world that the People’s Champion never fights alone, that 100 million Filipinos give that vicious left hook and the brutal body blows the power to make mere men surrender.

The Kapamilya network, through this campaign, has called for the fists of the Filipinos to lend their strength one more time for the titanic battle ahead through various methods via the different social media platforms.

One such method is through the use of the official hashtag #OneForPacman on Twitter, Insta-gram Facebook. One tweet or post with the hashtag equates to one punch for the Filipino icon. Another is the “Punch Ng Bayan Para Kay Pac-man” where one mimics the ring icon’s habit of pounding his fists to-gether, twice, before lunging for a

bone-breaking left straight or sneaky jab.

Another recourse would be to visit the website oneforpacman.abs-cbn.com and interact with the punch meter by clicking on the interactive punching bag which equates to one punch.

Isang Bayan Para Kay Pacman won’t be just about the punch meters as it also encourages the masses to relive the story of Emmanuel Dapidran Pacquiao before the fame, before the riches, as “Kid Kulafu,” the movie presented by ABS-CBN, Star Cinema, and Ten17 Productions and directed by Paul Soriano.

The Kapamilya network knows that cheering won’t be enough to support Manny in his greatest fight yet. It is time to stand up, step up to the plate and deliver.

It’s time to make whoever stares down Pacquiao realize that he is not up against one man, but 100 million Filipinos.

workers often have advanced education and specialized skills but are forced to migrate as “lower-skilled workers” be-cause they are unable to get a visa in their occupation.

21st century 'coolies'

The TFWP has also widely criticized by Canadian economists and media.

“Low-skill temporary foreign workers are the coolies of the 21st century,” wrote Calgary Herald columnist Raj Sharma. Coolies were “contract, un-skilled laborers largely sourced from British India and South China,” he said.

“With the abolition of slavery in the early 19th century, corporate interests needed a cheap source of manpower. Coolies were the answer. Indentured and bonded to their employers, they

were worked and, in most cases, ex-ploited. The British Raj, limiting the length of service, imposed regulations, making the company responsible for returning the worker after the contract elapsed. Tens of thousands left their countries of origin seeking higher wag-es and a better life.”

Sharma added: “Then and now, such contract workers are brown-skinned and mostly Filipinos and Mexicans. Then and now, corporate interests are the same — an emphasis on cheap, reli-able, compliant labour.”

More than 3,000 people have signed a petition calling on Ottawa to grant per-manent immigration status on landing for low-income migrant workers, said the Caregivers Action Centre.

The CFIB, for its part, has called on Ot-tawa to introduce a visa that would allow entry-level workers from over-seas to apply for permanent residence after two years. – Rappler.com

PACQUIAO ready for bad WEATHER in MAY!

The Philippines’ modern day hero is not alone. The entire nation is behind him.

Unlike Yolanda, the strongest typhoon ever to hit the Philippines, every Filipino is prepared for this mega fight on May 2 at the MGM boxing arena in Las Vegas. Whatever the outcome of this bout, the positive Filipino image that Pacquiao exudes is already a victory for the Filipinos.

Manny has won the hearts of many. His infectious smile, the down-to-earth humility, the bayanihan spirit (nationalistic aura), the Filipinos’ love for music and the religious generosity of this man has won the compassion, not only of the Hollywood celebrities, but much of the world population.

Manny personifies the brave, passionate and the very hard-working Filipinos around the globe. That the Filipino is competitive is an understate-ment. We are witness to the rise of Filipino sing-ing idol contest winners, the internationally re-nowned, world-class singers and actors. Filipinos also excel in the medical field as well as in sports.

Thanks to this man they nicknamed “Pacman”. His aura drew world attention. He is the epitome of a Filipino making waves. His name will ripple through generations to come.

Indeed, Pacquiao has put the Filipino and the be-loved Philippines on the world stage. (RT)
