My name is Sarah Dunphy and I am running forthe position of Business and Law Rep for theincoming Students Union, 2015/16.

Since coming to UCC in 2012, I have beeninvolved in many aspects of student life, fromacting as class rep in rst year, to my currentpposition as Auditor of the Philosophical Society.

I am running for this position as I believe that Ihave the necessary mix of skills and the relevantexperience needed to represent all students inthe College of Business and Law. I believe that Ican be the voice that every student in theCollege needs.

AAs part of my involvement in debating andpublic speaking, I have spent three yearsdeveloping my ability to convey any issues thatI feel need to be addressed, in a concise, coherent manner.

As a Commerce student, I have had theopportunity to interact with many departmentswithin the College of Business and Law,including, but not limited to:

Accounting and Finance Government Business Information Systems Management and Marketing Law.

I believe that this gives me an edge when itcomes to dealing with the problems of allstudents in the College, as I have previousexperience of dealing with all relevantdepadepartments.

There are 6 areas in particular that I would liketo work on for the next year, and I believe that,if elected, I can bring positive change to theCollege and represent students at a level that isneeded to incur this change.

1) Proper communication is vital to the running of anything. I would like to improve the level of communication that is currently in place between Class reps and the SU Exec. I would aim to do this by encouraging them to come to me with any and all problems that may be affecting their class. I would like to use my position as College rep to give the students of the College of Business and Law a greater voice in Exec and in discussions with the Education Officer. I rmly believe that I have the capability to bring communication to the next level.

2) Following on from what was a tricky switch to semesterisation, I would like to see that every student, from rst to nal year, understands the process of semesterisation and how it affects every aspect of their time here, including academics, clubs involvement and society involvement. This would include having relevant conversations with class reps throughout the year to initially introduce (or re-introduce, as the case may be) them to the idea of semesterisation, how they can help prepare their class for exams at Christmas and the added pressures of continuous assessments. I would like to work with class reps to put in place a framework by which they can help students deal with the stresses and pressures that can arise with what seems like continuous preparation for exams and assessments.

3) The problem of the late release of AFIS results this year caused some upset and confusion for some students who were affected by it. As we now know that this is a problem that can arise, I would like to continue current efforts to remedy the problem and ensure that the disruption to students is minimal at worst and non-existent at best. I would like to do this by communicating with relevant departments well ahead of exams, in order to ensure that all students will be made aware of any delay to their results.

4) If elected, one of the main areas that I would like to work on as College Rep is accessibility. It is my aim that every student in the College would know that they can contact me with any problem that they may have. I believe that I am approachable and I would like to encourage all students to bring issues, big and small, to my attention in order to alleviate any pressure that they may be feeling. I would do this by ensuring that everyone knows who I am, how I can help nd how they can contact me.

5) The opportunity to take part in work placement is something that affects many students in the College of Business and Law. It is my hope that with the right levels of communication between the College Rep, the Careers Service Office and all students who will be availing of work placement next year, the process runs as smoothly as possible. The work placement programme can be difficult to work through, especially now that there are exams at Christmas, followed swiftly by more at the start of March. I hope to build on the methods of dealing with semesterisation, and give students the relevant tools to prepare themselves for the issue performing well academically, while also aiming to secure placement.

6) I will look to ensure that each class is represented sufficiently . Often times there can be confusion, especially in situations like Commerce International and Law with languages. My aim is to ensure that each class has the correct representation and that the elections run more smoothly that they have in previous years. I would look to include societies like CommSoc and the Language Societies in the election process from early on in my term so as to ensure the fairest and best elections possible, in order to make sure that each student feels represented in the SU.
