Following extensive consultation, the Environment Agency recommended in the 2008 Pagham to East Head Coastal Defence Strategy that managed realignment was the preferred option for Medmerry.This is where new defences are built inland from the coast and new intertidal area is created seaward of these new defences.This scheme will provide an improved standard of protection against flooding for local communities. The scheme is due to be complete by Spring 2013. The Medmerry Managed Realignment scheme will also help create a large area of new wildlife habitat to replace protected areas that are being lost elsewhere in the Solent. Carefully designed creeks, islands, saltmarsh, reedbeds, ditches and wet grasslands will provide homes for rare waterbirds, water voles and many other creatures and wild plants. Extensive new public rights of way and permissive footpaths, cycleways and bridleways will be created around the site, together with specially- created viewpoints, providing a wonderful quiet amenity for local people and visitors. These cycle routes are mainly on minorroads or traffic free and give access toChichester and Pagham Harbours andthe new nature reserve to be created aspart of the Medmerry ManagedRealignment Scheme betweenBracklesham and Selsey. As part of thisscheme an off road cycle route will becreated around this new reserve linkingBracklesham/Earnley with Selsey.The circular route from Chichesterusing Salterns Way, then the link routeto Bill Way (route 88) back toChichester is 23 miles’
