Selection criteria for manhole covers

PLACES OF INSTALLATION

Standard EN 124 divides products into minimum level groups and classes according to their intended place ofinstallation :

TRAFFIC STRESSES

The following three parameters :- number of vehicles,- speed,- type of vehicles - cars or heavy vehicles using the carriageway,are combined and contribute to the definition of the concept of the type of traffic.

Some manhole covers are capable of passing a test load which exceeds that specified for their class. Othersare fitted with a reinforced frame in order to ensure stability in especially severe traffic conditions, while remai-ning in compliance with the installation conditions considered in the standard.

In addition to the group and class concepts specified in EN 124, it is recommen-ded that specific traffic and operating stresses should also be taken into accountin order to select the most suitable product.

SECURING OF COVER /GRATING IN FRAME

NOTE : Standard EN 124 specifies that, where there is any doubt on the class to be used, the higher classmust be selected.

• Group 6 : (class F 900) : Areas imposing particularly high wheel loads, such as aircraft pavements, etc..

• Group 5 : (class E 600 mini) : Areas imposing high wheel loads, such as docks, port areas, aircraft pavements,airports, factory yards, etc..

• Group 4 : (class D 400 mini) : Carriageways of roads - including pedestrian streets, hard shoulders and parkingareas for all types of road vehicles.

• Group 3 : (class C 250 mini) : For gully tops installed in the area of kerbside channels of roads which, whenmeasured from the kerb edge, extend to a maximum of 0.50 m into the carria-geway and a maximum of 0.20 m into the footway.

• Group 2 : (class B 125 mini) : Footways, pedestrian areas and comparable areas, car parks and car parkingdecks.

Selection criteria for manhole covers

Efficient management of sewer systems requires more frequent inspections and checks. The handling ofmunicipal castings designed without due care can lead to damage in the lumbar region of the back and spine.All SAINT-GOBAIN CANALISATION manhole covers are designed to facilitate opening and closing operationswith a minimum of force and to provide service teams with more ergonomic working conditions.

The following advice on fitting is taken from the sewerage reference catalogue.

1 - REMOVING A MANHOLE COVER OR GRATING ON AN EXISTING SEWER MAIN

• Make a cavity, staying asclose as possible to the bed-ding flange of themanhole cover.

• Remove debris.• Extract the cover from the

frame.• Carefully extract the frame.• Avoid debris falling into the

manhole.

* Additional precautions • Inspect and check for a sound seating surface.• Allow for a seating layer at least 30 millimetres

thick under the bedding flange frame.• Never reinstall the frame sole directly on the top

of the manhole or on the rim.• Prick the seating surface to ensure adhesiveness

of mortar.• Remove the dust and hose the cavity.

2 - FITTING THE FRAME

Trying to level a frame before applying theasphalt layer is a difficult and unreliableoperation. The frame must therefore belevelled after applying the asphalt layer.

The resistance of the manhole cover and ofthe bedding depend on this phase. Thetechnique using cross-beams (or battens) isthe most commonly used :

• It allows the frame to be levelled regardless of the slopeor camber.

• It avoids the settling of the manhole cover when the beddingmaterial sets (subsidence of the frame under its own weightbefore setting).

* Operating procedure :• Secure the frame onto two

crossbeams or battens with wire.• Place this assembly across the cavity.• Centre the assembly vertically with

respect to the manhole.• Leave a space of approximately 3

cm between the frame and the top ofthe manhole.

3 - PROTECTING THE SHAFTBefore placing the bedding material :

• Protect the manhole against any accidental introduction of mortar into the network.The formworks allow the filling of mortar under the bedding flange.

5 - DIAGRAM OF TYPE OF BEDDING

• Steady the frame by packing with bedding mortar until it emerges through the slotsin the bedding flange.

• Continue bedding in order to lock the frame in place.• 30 to 40 kg of cement type CPA 55 + sand/frame.• Do not fill the cavity completely.• Leave approximately 3 cm for surfacing.• Protect the wet bedding with damp sacks and/or a curing agent applied as soon

as the mixture starts to set.• Avoid excessive drying which results in cracking of the bedding.

7 - CLEANING AND FINISHING

3 cm = surfacing bituminous finish

2 to 3 cm = bedding material

NBWhen mixing the bedding mortar, please respect the recommended doses, and the water-to-cement ratio. Carefully follow the manufacturer's recommendations (instructions onpackaging). The setting time must be complied with before reopening to traffic. Thesetting time will vary according to the ambient temperature and relative humidity.

• Remove the form (planks or inner tube).• Check that the bedding material has not

penetrated between the frame and thecover.

* Additional precautions• Manhole tops equipped with ring :

Check that the ring seating has not been spoiled by any upward flow ofbedding material.

• Secured manhole tops : Clean ramps or seatings to ensure proper fittingof the cover.

• PAMREX : Provide for clearance under the hinge box housing in order tofacilitate cleaning. (See the self-adhesive label on the product).

Note :Cover the manhole cover with sand or kraft paperbefore applying the surfacing.This protection for the cover (against surfacingcoated materials or emulsion) ensures thatoperation of the closing device remainsunhampered.

Selection criteria for gully grates

In order to help customers make their choice among the various gully units, frame gra-tings and channel gratings in the gully grates range, SAINT-GOBAIN CANALISATIONhas prepared a dimensioning and decision-making aid software package.It can be used to determine the following points on the basis of the characteristics ofthe site studied :� the type of grates,� the number of grates to be used,� the spacing between two successive castings,� the quantity of rainwater drained by the sewer system.

TYPE OF COLLECTIONRun-off water can be collected either :

� by gully grates in a road carriageway or in a parking area, or by kerbside gully units.� Linear collection, by channel gratings.

LOCATION OF GULLY POTThe type of grating to be used is generally determined by the location of gully pots and the design of thedrainage network.

� When the gully pot is situated directly under the carriageway, a square flat grating is used.� When the gully pot is positioned to provide kerb and carriageway drainage, either a gully grate

or a SELECTA inlet should be used.� When gully pots are sited under the foot-path, units which incorporate a cover plate and grate are

used.

VBS2 gullies are complete units which can be used both assiphon and settling vessels. They are directly connected to thedrainage network, made of cast iron or clay. The hinged gratinghas a specially designed profile to improve drainage andprevent obstruction by leaves or other debris.

This device, fitted inshafts topped with alltypes of gratings, acts asan inlet and prevents the

escape of smells. For shafts with insidedimensions of 500 and 700 mm.

Designed to simplify the extension operation, the lids of the PAVA10 and 14 can be turned over and used as a tool to limit the ope-rating force. Equipped with two studs forming an operating nut, theinside face of the lid can be used to adjust the extension heightusing a plain 30 mm wrench or with a Tee wrench used for valveoperation.
