Our products are made from the finest raw materials which come from perfectly contro-lled compositions from origin all the way to the reception in Funosa. This is one of the reasons why we can insure a degree of “automotive perfection” performance in our products. Funosa is the only producer that can, when requested by the client, inform you about the mechanical performance maximum reports

(average resistance capacities above resis-tance class) of the product. At the same time, our suppliers as well as our own quality control team insure the absence of harmful radio-active elements in the devices fabricated, by frequent Geiger counter measurements (See Google for different incidents that there have been in Spain and the EU for using low quality scrap metal containing radioactive elements.).

We insure the quality of the iron with regular controls of the product semi-finished and finished in composition, structure and nodularity.

We insure the bolts of our frames and the integrity of concrete and asphalt that surround them with designs that uniformly and safely apply the right tension. Versatility: Our products are interchangeable so that in the event that there are changes made in an installa-tion area, this can be modified.

Our design team, specialized in using the latest 3D CAD tools, simulates structures by finite elements and si-mulations of filling, solidification, and deformation in order to ensure there are no internal defects that can minimize the benefits of the manhole cover. The design of the manhole covers is checked with leading edge software commonly used in the design of automotive parts.

CoatingThe protective coating used for the products commer-cialized by Cofunco is an applied enamel powder (sol-vent non-toxic and non-water polluting) having a base of thermally stable plastic resins treated at high tem-perature with polyester epoxy technology and a thic-kness 100 microns. In contrast, this enamel, different from the other paints that are poor performers, has a particular color; black RAL-9004 and does extremely well protecting against different types of corrosive and / or habitual atmospheric conditions on a manhole cover located on a road. Typically, our customers and

users can manipulate our products without getting their hands “sticky”. Moreover, our enamel has a broad coverage of protection against contamination, even in water ways and sewers.

These compulsory regulations are part of the legisla-tive developments made in the EU to protect the en-vironment and health of the population from adverse effects from the use of paint with solvents or volatile organic compounds. Funosa complies integrally with these laws by respecting quality and the environment.

The primer used in Funosa products commercialized by Cofunco gives us the following advantages:

1 Complies with legislation en vigor with environ-mental issues:

• Directive 1000/13/CE, related to the limitation of emissions of volatile organic compounds due to solvents (typically used in asphalt and bituminous paints)

• Spanish Royal Decree 117/2003 develops the European Directive to Spanish legislation.

2 The polyester epoxy covering allows the client to inspect the structural quality of the pieces that are delivered so they may be able to detect fabrica-tion defects or unconventional “quick fixes”, whe-reas if other paint in the market was used, these imperfections could be hidden.

3 A clearly superior visual aspect and contact than

the asphalt or bituminous primers.

Regulations and Certifications

In Spain FUNOSA certifies with AENOR. Pro ducts manufactured by Funosa which are com-mercialized by Cofunco are certified by AFNOR, a French certifier. AFNOR is the most important insti-tution in the world for this type of device certifica-tion. Disposing of a reference guide for certification with the current rigorous standards EN-124 and experienced professional engineers specialized in the products, they perform plant and market ins-pections. All this is the most powerfull guarantee for client network operators as well as end users. It prevents poorly designed, poorly manufactured or simply poor quality products reach the market causing road safety hazards. AFNOR is the only European certifier that demands real time test in heavy traffic through various months to verify both product performance and security for each product class D400 or superior. Funosa is the first non-French manufacturer that has achieved this complex certification. The sewer system products commercialized by Cofunco are manufactured in Funosa’s plant in Spain. That means that the product, in addition to the AFNOR certification, is subject to the current legislation in the European Union for pro-duct warranties affecting all products made in the European Union. This legislation protects users and European consumers when it comes to products manufactured in the EU concerning safety material, er-gonomics, product guarantees, public health standards (for example, free of radioactivity or pollutants or harmful chemicals, etc) whereas products manufactured outside the European Union, which are not subject to the same compliance and control of European legislation in terms of guarantees. For other zones Cofunco also has other certifications available such as; BVQI, IOCert etc.

Preparing the bed Prepare a bed that corresponds to the dimensions of the hole. Clean down to the solid concrete at the bottom and prevent gravel falling inside the hole. Clean the bed face; remove dust, residues or grease. Hollow brick must not be used as a bed for the frame.

Placing the frame, leveling and shuttering The covers must be placed following the direction of the traffic, as shown in the picture. Place a layer of fine mortar, 2-6 cm thick, on the frame bed. Put the frame on that layer and centre the passage heights of the frame and hole. Level the frame with a mallet. Level it according to the slope of the road, with wedges, han-

ging, or with another system that will keep it stable in the following steps. The frame must be 0 to 1 cm under the final level of the road.

Put shuttering inside of the frame, to prevent the concrete getting into the hole. We recommend leveling with the tops installed. The lower height frames at 100 mm must be installed with suitable anchoring devices.

setting time). Pour the concrete on the outside of the rim. Vibrate it so it penetrates in the frame’s cells. Fill up the bed until the required height, according to the required type of finish. Make sure measures are taken to avoid a non-desired setting. There should be no mortar or concrete inside the frame in the closing area or the hinge area.

Remove it before closing the cover. 3 cm must be free of mortar and concrete under the joint profile. In no case must the con-

crete/mortar touch the joint or make it difficult to put it down.

Warranty conditionsThe instructions must be followed carefully, and the installer must be aware of these instructions, because they are necessary for the product warranty. They are available on the non-restricted public web site www.cofunco.es.

Installation processUse a suitable product for the manhole: if the hole is round, it needs a round frame; if it is square, it needs a square frame. Under no circumstance must traffic run over if the product has not been installed completely.

The covers must be handled softly and be placed without being banged.

It is not necessary to remove the frame top to install it. It you remove the top, handle it softly and avoid bangs when closing

it in the spring closing system. No mortar must be put inside the frame, and especially not in the

lock or hinge housing. There must be no mortar remaining in these areas. See photo 1.

No mortar must be placed under the joint. It could alter the correct po-sition of the elastic joint or make it harder to be replaced in the future. See photo 2.

Once the cover and the final road surface around it have been placed, the remains on the top-joint support area must be cleaned, as well as the hinge and lock housing. See photo 3 and 4.

Under no circumstances should pave the upper face of the cover, still less get to perform an express vibration of said asphalt over the

cover. This can cause an incorrect frame fixing and internal structural damage affecting the proper functioning of the cap during its lifetime. See photo 6.

No vehicle must run over the cover without it being installed, with the road surface around it finished, and without the base of the frame resting on a 2 - 3 cm fine layer of mortar (between the lower part of the frame and the upper part of the hole).

In order to avoid the asphalt layer from sticking to the surface of the top, we recommend putting sand on the top. And then remove the asphalt that remains there.

We recommend the higher level of the asphalt layer in the area around the frame to be above the frame about 0 - 1 cm. This precau-tion prevents the movement of the road roller from damaging the frame, the soundproofing joint of the product and the actual manhole bed.

Under no circumstance must the frame be placed on hollow bricks. When the road roller goes over the asphalt, the surface around the frame may break and begin to deteriorate

Finishing and putting into circulation Remove the shuttering. Before using a road roller, make sure that the cover does not project

above the frame, that there are not stones or gravel on the joint and that the frame does not project above the level of the final road surface.

Carry out the final road surface (mortar, asphalt, tiling). The frame must be 0 to 1 cm at most below the final level of the final road surface.

Close the cover; make sure it rests properly on the frame. Scrape the places where the cover and frame rest.

Brush the joint in the place where it rests (above and underneath) and get rid of the gravel.

For any other specifications, the appropriate tests will be carried out.

Clean the affected area and put into circulation.
