Ductile cast iron is a ferrous alloy with a carbon content higher than 2% approximately, either loose as graphite or as iron carbide Fe3C (cementite). The former is called Grey Iron and the latter White Iron. While grey iron is to be preferred to make manhole covers and gratings, white iron is very fragile and hard, so it is not suitable to make utensils.

Grey iron can be either lamellar or ductile cast iron.

Lamellar cast iron is made up of thousands of plates which interrupt the continuity of the metal matrix and consequently jeopardise its mechanical resistance and make it subject to possible cracking or braking.

Ductile cast iron is is made up of spheroids achieved by introducing a suitable quantity of magnesium into the bath before the casting. This gives the product a high breaking load as well as remarkable elasticity.

A comparison between lamellar cast iron and ductile cast iron shows that:

• ductile cast iron has a higher breakage safety coefficient, since it follows any deformation due to loads without breaking (unlike lamellar cast iron), then returning to the original condition after the stress;

• to manufacture a product in lamellar cast iron with the same load class as a ductile cast-iron product, you need more mass. So the product will be heavier with higher shipment and handling costs.

Ductile cast iron is therefore a very valuable building material: it has as many benefits as lamellar cast iron but it does not have some of its defects. Its mechanical characteristics are similar to those of good-quality steel.

Mufl e manhole covers and gratings are manufactured in offi cially ISO9001-certifi ed factories located in China with ductile cast iron GJS 500-7 (Standard EN 1563-2004). They are designed according to Standard EN124 based on ISO 9001:2000 procedures, which certify the quality system of the product/service supplied by Mufl e.

Class A15 Area which can only be used by pedestrians and pedal cyclists.

Class B125 Footways, pedestrian areas and comparable areas, car parks or parking decks.

Class C250 For gratings installed in the area of kerbside channels of roads which, when measured from the kerb edge, extend maximum 0.5 m into the carriageway and maximum 0.2 m into the footway.

Class D400Arriageways of roads (pedestrian streets included), hard shoulders and parking areas for all types of road vehicles.

Class E600 Areas subject to high axle loads such as docks and airports.

Class F900 Areas subject to very high axle loads such as airports.

Said marks must be clearly and durably shown. They should be visible when the unit is installed, if possible.

In 2001 MUFLE S.p.A. was awarded the Certifi cate of Compliance with Standard ISO 9001:2000 by the Italian Quality Assurance Institute IGQ No°2B45 for its “design, manufacture and commercial distribution of drainage systems, manhole covers and gratings marked MUFLE

– Commercial distribution of products for the building industry”.This means that all the Company’s processes from the management of resources to the manufacture of the products - including the defi nition of responsibilities, the analysis and improvement of the processes - are handled systematically and regularly. And they are aimed to meet the customer’s requests and to ensure consistency in the quality of the goods manufactured.

IGQ PRODUCT CERTIFICATES

The manhole covers and gratings in ductile cast iron manufactured by MUFLE S.p.A. are certifi ed according to Standard EN 124 “Manhole covers and gratings”.

The certifi cate is a further guarantee for the fi nal customer that the products are manufactured with high-quality manufacturing processes and comply with the reference specifi cations. This also ensures that the regular checks specifi ed by Standard EN 124 are carried out, as MUFLE S.p.A continuously performs load tests in its in-house laboratory as well as metallographic analyses and tensile tests in external laboratories.

Consequently all MUFLE manhole covers and gratings are marked with the IGQ symbol.

INSTALLATION OF SERIES THETA GRATINGSSeries Theta

ASSEMBLING CONSISTS IN 4 DIFFERENT STAGES:

1. Fasten the longitudinal members to the structure below;

2. Insert the grating so that the fi ns of the left longitudinal member (acting as a hinge) match the housings in the grating;

3. Rest the other side of the grating on the right longitudinal member: the screw will pass through the hole in the grating;

4. Screw a cap nut on the protruding screw: make sure an unremovable spring washer is inserted too.

InstallationINSTALLATION OF MANHOLE COVERSAND GRATINGS

For the appropriate use of a manhole cover or grating it is necessary to:

• have a load class suitable to the function and installation place. To this end the specifi cations of Standard EN124 must be considered (see par. 4 of this catalogue on page 4);

• carry out a perfect installation so that the other materials used will be able to house the loads due to pedestrian and/or vehicular traffi c and to withstand them properly.

The following recommendations are about the installation:

a. Use concrete with a minimum compression strength of Rck 35N/mm2 and stone aggregate with max granulometry 6/8 mm in compliance with the hardening times specifi ed.

b. Use units with a frame base designed so as to be dimensionally compatible with all the gullies (either standard or non-standard).

c. Use units whose frames have a supporting surface which guarantees compliance with max pressure value, i.e. 7.5 N/mm2 according to EN124. This requirement is guaranteed for certifi ed products. Warning: The frame must rest perfectly on the top of the gully to be sure that the pressure value is guaranteed.

d. Remove any foreign bodies from the frame and the gully before preparing a layer of cement mortar between them of about 2 cm.

e. Level the frame to ensure that, once the work has been completed, there are no uneven sections between the road surface and the unit level, as they cause traffi c troubles and in the long term can cause early aging of the manhole cover or grating.

f. Include a stiffening edge of at least 250/300 mm per side. Metal reinforcements can be used to properly counter the traction stress generated in the concrete support (in case of heavy loads during use).

g. According to the type of cement used for the installation and the climatic conditions in which the work is carried out (temperature, humidity level etc), comply with minimum hardening times before inserting the cover or the grating into the frame and before making the installation area suitable for transit. For ordinary cement types sold on the market said times are at least 1 hour for cover or grating insertion and 48/72 hours before transit is possible. In some case concrete additives can be used to speed up these times (quick setting cement).

h. Make sure there are no concrete residues or bituminous conglomerate between the cover and the frame in the hinge area or closing systems (if any), as they can jeopardise the steadiness of the cover and make it noisy.

ELEMENTS OF CONTRACT

1. Supply and installation of manhole cover or grating “SERIES ALFA” (Beta, Gamma, Delta) in ductile cast iron GJS 500/7 in compliance with EN 1563 and according to the designing, testing and marking requirements specifi ed by Standard EN 124, with load class A15 (B125, C250, D400), as made up of:

• Square fl at frame with outer dimensions at least ___mm, net open space at least ___mm and height at least __mm, equipped with anchoring and supporting devices having standardised dimensions for improved adhesion to cement mortar. The U shape inside makes it watertight.

• Square cover whose dimensions allow coupling with the relevant frame. Its fi tting depth is at least __mm and it comes equipped with stiffening ribs on the bottom which ensure resistance to loads, closed-bottom slots which house suitable lifting hooks, anti-slippery projecting elements whose surface is 10% to 70% the overall surface, and the marks specifi ed by the Standard.

• Square cover whose dimensions allow coupling with the relevant frame. Its fi tting depth is at least __mm and it comes equipped with stiffening ribs on the bottom which ensure resistance to loads, closed-bottom slots which house suitable lifting hooks, and a 75mm-deep fi lling tank which ensures any paving can be used.

4. Supply and installation of manhole cover or grating “SERIES OMEGA” in ductile cast iron GJS 500/7 in compliance with EN 1563 and according to the designing, testing and marking requirements specifi ed by Standard EN 124, with load class D400, as made up of:

• Square (round, octagonal) fl at frame with outer dimensions at least ___mm, net open space at least ___mm and height at least __mm, equipped with anchoring and supporting devices having standardised dimensions for improved adhesion to cement mortar. It has an internal U shape which makes it watertight and an anti-smell/anti-movement shaped gasket which counters the cover edge. The frame must also have one groove suitable to house the hinge used to open the cover so that the cover can be locked in the open position at 110° and one groove for releasing and opening said cover.

• Round cover (grating) whose dimensions allow coupling with the relevant frame. Its fi tting depth is at least __mm and it comes equipped with stiffening ribs on the bottom which ensure resistance to loads, one appendix for frame releasing and one appendix for frame articulation, anti-slippery projecting elements whose surface is 10% to 70% the overall surface, and the marks specifi ed by the Standard. Closing is ensured by a suitable elastic bar.

5. Supply and installation of manhole cover or grating “SERIES ETA” (telecommunications networks and electric energy) in ductile cast iron GJS 500/7 in compliance with EN 1563 and according to the designing, testing and marking requirements specifi ed by Standard EN 124, with load class D400, as made up of:

• Rectangular fl at frame with outer dimensions at least ___ mm, net open space at least ___mm and height at least 100mm, equipped with anchoring and supporting devices having standardised dimensions for improved adhesion to cement mortar. The U shape inside makes it watertight. The frame must also have 4 or 8 slots (uniformly arranged on the two parallel sides) to house the relevant hinges to open the cover. A locking system in the open position at 110° and a safe position already at 90° will be provided for.

• Cover made up of 2 or 4 triangular sections whose dimensions allow coupling with the relevant frame. Each section is fi xed to it by means of 2 hinges. Its fi tting depth is at least __mm and it comes equipped with stiffening ribs on the bottom which ensure resistance to loads, anti-slippery projecting elements whose surface is 10% to 70% the overall surface, the marks specifi ed by the Standard, and a mark identifying the telecommunications network (electric energy) in order to determine a unique installation place.

6. Supply and installation of manhole cover or grating “SERIES LAMBDA” (Sigma, Sigma B) in ductile cast iron GJS 500/7 in compliance with EN 1563 and according to the designing, testing and marking requirements specifi ed by Standard EN 124, with load class C250 as made up of:

• Square fl at (concave) frame with outer dimensions at least ___mm, net open space at least ___mm and height at least __mm, equipped with anchoring and supporting devices having standardised dimensions for improved adhesion to cement mortar. The U shape inside makes it possible to house the special ductile cast-iron siphon.

• Square fl at (concave) grating whose dimensions allow coupling with the relevant frame. Its fi tting depth is at least __mm and it comes equipped with stiffening ribs on the bottom which ensure resistance to loads, concentric pseudo-rectangular slots with rounded corners (square slots uniformly arranged on the whole surface, usually defi ned “honeycomb” slots), anti-slippery projecting elements whose surface is 10% to 70% the overall surface, and the marks specifi ed by the Standard.

7. Supply and installation of manhole cover or grating with hinge “SERIES EPSILON” in ductile cast iron GJS 500/7 in compliance with EN 1563 and according to the designing, testing and marking requirements specifi ed by Standard EN 124, with load class D400, as made up of:

• Square fl at frame with outer dimensions at least ___mm, net open space at least ___mm and height at least __mm, equipped with anchoring and supporting devices having standardised dimensions for improved adhesion to cement mortar. The U shape inside makes it possible to house the special ductile cast-iron siphon. The frame must also have an articulating system for the grating housed inside which prevents the grating from being tampered with. Stops are provided to lock the grating in the open position at 125°.

• Square fl at cover whose dimensions allow coupling with the relevant frame. Its fi tting depth is at least 50mm and it comes equipped with stiffening ribs on the bottom which ensure resistance to loads, concentric pseudo-rectangular slots with rounded corners, anti-slippery projecting elements whose surface is 10% to 70% the overall surface, and the marks specifi ed by the Standard.

8. Supply and installation of gratings for drainage channels “SERIES THETA” with longitudinal members in ductile cast iron GJS 500/7 in compliance with EN 1563 and according to the designing, testing and marking requirements specifi ed by Standard EN 124, with load class C250 or D400, as made up of:

• Rectangular fl at grating with length at least 750mm, width at least ___mm and height at least 35mm, equipped with stiffening ribs on the bottom which ensure resistance to loads, square slots uniformly arranged on the whole surface, anti-slippery projecting elements whose surface is 10% to 70% the overall surface, and the marks specifi ed by the Standard. The grating must also have a hole for fastening with a screw and a nut on one side, and two slots to house the longitudinal-member fi ns on the other side in order to prevent any movements during operation.

• Right longitudinal member with length at least 750mm, width at least 68mm, height at least 97mm and fi tting depth at least 35mm. It must be equipped with a stainless-steel screw to fi x the grating, pits for the concrete support, holes to introduce a rod for the casting, and knurling on the bottom to ensure more adherence.

• Left longitudinal member with length at least 750mm, width at least 68mm, height at least 97mm and fi tting depth at least 35mm. It must be equipped with two protruding fi ns which (during the assembly operations) will be fi tted into special housings in the grating to prevent any movement during operation. It will also have pits for the concrete support, holes to introduce a rod for the casting, and knurling on the bottom to ensure more adherence.
