MANAGING YOU NEW JOB EFFECTIVELY

Most people would agree that a

person’s success in his job depends on his

knowledge, skills, and abilities. There is a fine line

between these three components of job success.Knowledge is the practical understanding of

things, skills are proficiencies acquired through

training, and abilities are the innate capabilities

or talents. But these three components simply

won’t earn someone success in his job. Effective

job management or a person’s ability to manage

well despite being new in a job is a must if one

aspires success.

There is this general idea that

experienced personnel do not need adjustment

to their new job’s environment since they arenot really new, as compared to inexperienced

ones. However, this is not entirely true. When

personnel change jobs, they are really starting over again like they did their first time. Experiences even make it

harder for them to adjust because they have been used to their previous work environment.

An employee’s first few weeks and months play a crucial role in earning him job opportunities and success.

It is during these times that he creates a lasting impression to his superior and peers that will eventually determine

his performance, future salaries, advancements, job satisfaction, movement within the organization, self-fulfilment,

and commitment to the job. Every employee therefore, including future employees like students, must be able to

learn how to manage his job effectively. Human Resource professors and authors Edwood F. Holton III and Sharon

S. Naquin provides us twelve steps that we need to learn in order to succeed in a new job.

The first step  basically revolves around the question, “Will this attitude help me succeed in my job?”

Success-related attitudes must be adopted. These attitudes are those that superiors want to see in their personnel.

Personnel who show humility earn the respect of their superior and peers. Those who show interest for continuous

education and are willing to learn are also appreciated. Flexibility or the ability to easily adapt to changes is a must

in employees in today’s business world where change is constant. Personnel must show respect to how the business

operates in order to gain respect as well. A new employee also needs to be open to new experiences and strategies

of the firm. Every employee must show a positive attitude and work hard. As a personnel, show your employer that

you are committed to your responsibilities.

Personnel sometimes

tend to have huge expectations

in their new job. Of course,

every personnel look forwardto fulfilling their aspirations in

the new opportunity offered to

them. But it is likely that some

of these expectations will not

be met. Thus the second step –

to adjust one’s expectations.

While expectation-related

frustrations could be a sign of

real problems in the work

environment, individuals must

check if their expectations were

attainable in the first place.

Employees must not let their

expectations keep them from

being effective in their job.

Whether experienced or not, a new employee must have “breaking-in” skills. This third step  is very

important in making a successful entry to the work environment. Being hired is different from being accepted  by the

people in the organization. One must earn the acceptance of the people he works with. Unless you have already

been accepted, your workmates think you don’t understand the organization enough, so it is not advisable to impose

constructive criticisms and suggestions. Also, avoid “big splash” strategies or causing a lot of attention for yourself;

not too soon anyway. Do not parade what you know. Instead, show your workmates that you are willing to learn. As

a newcomer, learn to conform for a while. Build a good track record by looking for opportunities to be successful,

even in small tasks. This will open door to more opportunities and eventually, to success.

First impressions last. This is what the fourth step implies. Personnel who make the best impressions early

are usually the first ones to be given opportunities to projects and tasks, making their dream of succeeding in their

jobs at reach. Your previous track records may be the reason you were hired, but it will only be meaningful if you

can prove that you can do as good or even better in your new job. As a new personnel, your first challenge is to know

what the firm wants to see. The second challenge is to pay attention to actions that create positive first impressions.

Because business firms are people working together towards a common objective, it is important for a new

employee to build an effective relationship with his co-workers and superior as well. This is the essence of the fifth

step. Invest time and make an effort to communicate well with them. Even as a new employee, show them that you

are an asset to the team. Build a network of contacts that can help you understand your job better. Ask for

supervision or guidance of more senior colleagues.

The sixth step poses a series of questions that aims to formulate answers that can help new employees

build a strong working relationship with their superior. The principle of the sixth step is to find out what you can

provide for your superior, and him to you, in order to know what your best approach to him will be, and how in

every activity in the firm both of you can benefit each other.

Culture defines how you do and what you were hired to do. As a new employee, you must learn the

organizational culture in your new job environment. The rules are to fit in the business firm’s culture and embrace

Step 1: Adopt the right ATTITUDES.

Step 2: Adjust your EXPECTATIONS.

Step 3: Master BREAKING-IN skills.

Step 6: Create a strong WORKING

Step 11: Master the TASKS of your job

SKILLS, AND ABILITIES you need.

Step 7: Understand your

organization's CULTURE.Step 8: Adopt to the organizational

Step 9: Understand you new ROLES.

it, and to show that you can unlearn you previous organization’s culture. Learning culture is hard because it is unlike

the rules and regulations written down. Pay attention to what the people in the firm do and what they don’t.  This is

the seventh step.

Watch people and ask questions. This is the most effective way to learn to adapt to the organizational

system, as the eight step explains. As a newcomer, consider observing the politics in the firm. Identify what the

controversial political positions are and choose which ones are worth fighting for. Make sure to build your careerwith outstanding performance.

New personnel should accept and understand the special roles for newcomers. Do not resist new personnel

“dues or contributions” and accept how your co-workers treat newcomers, as the ninth step states. But most of the

time, these are just forms of “initiation” to belong in the new environment, so do not   take it personally. Be

professional and understand that the business firm does not move for you. Take responsibility for yourself. Forget

about your role expectations. At the end, you will earn great respect.

The tenth step is a challenge for you as a new employee to improve your professional skills to develop work

smarts. Professionalism is displayed by effective time and work flow management, prioritizing, and multi-tasking. It

is also shown in making good oral presentations and written reports. As an employee, show your commitment by

participating in meetings and group activities, sharing your ideas, and working well with your superior. True

professionalism is also about being organized, hardworking and trustworthy at all time.

After completing the aforementioned ten steps, a new employee must focus on mastering his new job.

When provided with trainings or orientation, comply dutifully as it serves as refresher course, and may help you

discover new things in order for you to perform you job with a high degree of proficiency. This is the eleventh step.

The twelfth and last step  is acquiring knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform you task as an

employee. As mentioned above, these are the three components that leads to success in one’s job. There  are two

ways to acquire knowledge and skills and do your job better: through training and continuous education. Do not be

ashamed to ask for training or help. Take advantage of trainings offered. Take the initiative to learn more about the

operations of the firm.

These steps take time to be put into practice. For a more effective coping with and managing of your new job, it is advised that these steps be done accordingly. But of course, as the employee, it is your responsibility to

succeed in your job. Your own performance will determine whether you will succeed or not. It is not the business

and your superior’s duty to spoon-feed you as you are already entering an organization and you must act

professionally. You are expected to perform a high-level of performance after your first year in your new

organization. Invest time, effort, and energy. These will pay off eventually and ensure success in your job.
