This talk in 2 points.

“Making” is challenging traditional design processes.

Design can learn and use this.

When we embed connectivity in everyday objects. What happens when those objects are designed with an understanding of the affordances of the web.

What is #iot?

Your product extends the capabilities of an existing device. It’s tethered to a mobile phone. If connectivity is lost, the object becomes unusable because its control interface is inaccessible. Non-objects, more like accessories.

Design to extend.

Piggy-back on an existing product and augment it with connectivity. Technology is invisible so everything looks normal. You may be redefining a user’s assumptions about a product.

Design to comfort.

Develop a design language that is unique to users’ interaction with a new technology. Developing a new visual language consumers. Develop a new space in retail.

Design to disrupt.

IOT’s future. Some ideas just keep being repeated until a larger player gets involved.

A maker’s USP. The value is in the doing. There’s an eagerness to build even if no problem is solved.

The potential. Understand the limits of the network “There are just certain things you just can’t get electrons to do”
