Recipe

• Why Open Access?• Benefits• Funder requirements• Types of Open Access• Open Access journals• LSHTM Research Online• Help/Assistance• Licenses

Page 3: Making Research Open Access

Background• Technology allowed

information to be shared/liberated much more easily

• Open Data, Open Science, Open Educational Resources, Open Source Software

• Serials Crisis – 250% price increase over inflation in last 30 years

• Average annual profit for ‘big publishers’ 35%

Page 4: Making Research Open Access

Benefits• Increased/instant

communication• Interdisciplinary research• Raises research profile• New areas of research through

new technologies• Increased visiblity of developing

world’s research• Audiences outside academia• Improves the speed, efficiency

and efficacy of research• Research results are also

teaching materials

Page 5: Making Research Open Access

Types of Open Access• Gold and Green• Gold – immediate access to

final version/publisher pdf• PMC if required• Allows wide reuse• Sometimes a fee• Green – author accepted

manuscript, immediate or embargo period

• More restrictive reuse• No fee

Open Access Journals/Publishers• New ones everyday• PLoS, BioMed Central, e-Life,

Hindawi, Peer-J• Directory of Open Access

Journals• http://www.doaj.org/ • Hybrid Open Access journals• OA monographs – Ubiquity

Press• http://www.doabooks.org/ • Predatory publishers

Funder requirements• RCUK, Wellcome Trust,

European Commission• Other funders e.g Gates

Foundation• Open Access immediately

or within 6-12months• Available in EuropePMC,

ESRC Catalogue, LSHTM Research Online

• Block grant

Page 9: Making Research Open Access

RCUK • Any articles/conference

proceedings 1st April 2013• Funder credited• Fee paid? Publisherpdf,CC-BY

license, Immediate OA• Author manuscript – no fee, CC-

BY-NC-ND license, embargo 6-24 months

• Collaborations then PI must decide responsible for OA

• Part or wholly funded• After lifetime of grant• RCUK students also eligible

Page 11: Making Research Open Access

Wellcome Trust• CC-BY and deposited

immediately into EuropePMC/PMC

• Does not cover page/colour charges

• Books and book chapters October 1st 2013 (new grants) October 1st 2014 (current grants) any CC license

• NOT textbooks, edited collections

YES

Page 13: Making Research Open Access

Key & Notes: • Gold = An article processing charge is required, publisher final version pdf

is made open access immediately• Green = No article processing charge required, author accepted version

(peer reviewed, non formatted) is made open access either immediately or after an embargo

• APC = Article Processing Charge• LSHTM-RO = LSHTM Research Online• CC-BY = Creative Commons license that allows all reuse including

commercial as long as there is attribution• Sherpa Fact website allows researchers to check if a journal is compliant

with individual RCUK funders open access policies• PLoS, BioMed Central are ‘Gold’ and CC-BY• MRC/BBSRC articles must be deposited into EuropePMC. If ‘Gold’

publisher will do this, if ‘Green’ LSHTM-RO staff will arrange deposit• ESRC articles must be deposited into ESRC Research Catalogue, contact

LSHTM-RO staff for information

Paying Open Access• Article Processing Charge• Billing address:• London School of Hygiene

and Tropical MedicineKeppel StLondon WC1E 7HT

• VAT number: GB 233 7560 66

• Covers page/colour charges

Page 15: Making Research Open Access

LSHTM Research Onlinehttp://researchonline.lshtm.ac.uk/

• Schools online OA database/repository

• Gold & Green• NERC, BBSRC, ESPRC,

European Commission, Cancer Research, NIHR

• Reports, posters, presentations, theses, video, audio

• LSHTM login will allow you to create records directly

Page 16: Making Research Open Access

ResearchGate• ‘Facebook for academics’• Popular• Many questions about it• Unless article has been made

OA it cannot be deposited here

• Author accepted manuscript – your call

• Low likelihood of publisher asking you to remove paper

• Must have RG account to read papers

Page 17: Making Research Open Access

Creative Commons

• Licenses which clearly state what you can do

• CC-BY most ‘unrestricted’

• Commercial reuse, wikipedia, blogs, translations

• CC-BY-NC-ND can read, download, put on educational sites
