Welcome to Sale XVI and the first sale at the ranch. It seems like yesterday when we acquired the Morton Ranch from Bill Morton but it’s been twelve years, running Angus cows on the Milk River Ridge. We’ve had some ups and downs with drought, BSE and a couple of tough springs but we survived and things look pretty positive for the cow-calf operator and in turn, the seed stock producer.

During these dozen years and even prior, we made every effort to incorporate the science of the day into our management program. We firmly believe in the EPDs as calculated by our breed associations and wouldn’t buy a bull without them. And now these EPDs are embraced by Genomic analysis giving one more confidence and earlier reliability in the data. Science has and will continue to make breeding cattle more exciting and profitable in the future. The reality is that we have the lowest cow numbers on hand in North America in 60 years. That is going to drive calf prices up and as a result, the consumer will have to pay more. But how much more before they turn to an alternative protein source? If they do not have a very good eating experience with beef, it is likely they will buy the alternative; if they have a very good eating experience with beef, time and time again, they will dig deeper and pay the higher price. It is all about quality beef. In 2010, sales of Certified Angus Beef saw record production in Canada of 17 million pounds but the sad part of the story is that Canada imported close to 13 million pounds of Certified Angus Beef from the U.S. What an opportunity we have before our very eyes. You have heard of premiums being realized by those carcasses that qualify for the CAB grade. They are substantial and it is time, as a producer, that you were on the receiving end. Be sure to know that just any Angus bull is not going to “cut the mustard.” One must study the Expected Progeny Differences, otherwise how do you know what your bull will produce. I could go on and on, on this subject but space does not allow me to do that. Give us a call, we would love to talk.

We appreciate your patronage over the years and look forward to some profitable years ahead. Remember the bull you use in 2012 will determine your profitability in the years to come. He is half the herd.

The bulls are an exciting group, bred to do a job for the most discriminating breeder. As we turn the generations, we feel each year is better than the last. You will be the judge.

Remember, the sale is at the ranch just west of Warner. Come early, check out the bulls, have a visit and lunch is on us.

Do call if we can help in any way and remember, “Be sure your cattle measure up-use a Benchmark Bull.”

Sincerely, Mike and Doug Munton Doug Munton 403-328-6966 Mike Munton 403-394-4903

Elite DamsThe Canadian Elite Cow Report is an effort to identify superior cows in the Angus breed. Emphasis is placed on early puberty, breeding and early calving, followed by regularity of calving interval and above-average performance of the offspring. The Elite Cow Report requires a cow to have a minimum of three calves to determine her regularity of calving and ability to consistently produce calves with a superior weaning weight year after year.

For specific Elite Cow requirements, turn to page 62.

8301 came in dam from Gardiner Angus Ranch who has rewritten the book, when it comes to carcass cattle. Phenotypically you cannot fault him. He is wide based, deep, with a perfect spring of rib and a top you could dine on. We have used him extensively and he will get more use in the future. He is one of only two bulls born 2008 through 2011 that is +106 for YW and +0.96 for Marbling. 8301 has 75 calves recorded, the other bull, none. 8301’s mother is a very moderate T510 daughter who we have flushed with considerable success. 8301 exemplifies our program. You can see him sale day at the ranch.

We had been looking for a 6807 son for some time, the great breeding bull that he is. He is the sire of so many great ones including Alberda Traveler 416, Connealy Dateline, Duff Encore, Rimrock, GDAR Traveler 011, GDAR Traveler 044, GAR Commitment, OCC Anchor, OCC Echelon, OCC Emblazon, T510, Sitz Traveler 9929, Woodhill Alliance and likely others that I have missed. And for daughters one could go on and on. So when we came across a young son out of a true breeding gem, we knew we had to own Baron. Could turn out to be the best money we’ve spent on a bull.

The dam of Baron, GAR EXT 704, is an own daughter of the immortal EXT. She is a flush sister to GAR Exaltation 3144 and the record valued GAR EXT 614 who sold one-half interest for $230,000. 704 has had embryo flushes sell for $40,000, pregnancies bring as high as $80,000 and produced a daughter at $170,000 valuation, plus many others. 704 as of spring 2008 had 33 daughters in production with a combined weaning ratio of 103, an IMF ratio of 103 and an REA ratio of 100 on 83 scanned progeny.

Baron is perfect on his feet and legs, has a great hip and as good a rear quarter as you’ll find. He is deep and wide based. He has ample performance with a 725 pound weaning weight and a 1288 pound yearling weight. He scanned a %IMF of 5.03 with a 13.4 REA and had a 38 cm. scrotal. His EPD profile indicates average growth and gainability as well as milk, and his EPDs put him in the top 4% for BW, the top 7% for REA and top 15% for Fat.

Fifth best 205DW in his group of 22, he will push the scale down as will his calves. Misty 055, the grand dam is Elite and I’d say responsible for 15 pounds of BW on this guy. You might think twice about using Lot 32 on smaller framed heifers but he sure will work on larger framed heifers and your cows. He is flat good with great Marb EPDs.

Expected Progeny DifferencesExpected Progeny Differences (EPDs) are statistics generated for individual cattle through national genetic evaluations.

EPDs: • allow breeders to estimate a young animal’s breeding value – that animal’s value as a parent • allow a fair comparison of breeding value by removing environmental bias such as climate, feed and special management • the best tool available to compare animals between herds, countries and year of birth • help breeders make informed decisions regarding breeding stock selection by evaluating numerous traits such as growth-related traits (BW, WW, YW, Milk), carcass (REA,FAT, %IMF, etc.) and reproductive efficiency(CE, MCE, SC) • estimate the group performance of one parent compared to the group performance of another parent, assuming similar mates

To evaluate seedstock, use EPDs, pedigree and visual assessment. With EPDs, the concept of “intermediate optimums” works best. Selection for one trait or for extremes generally results in unexpected consequences due to genetic correlations – for example, intense selection for high yearling weight will also increase birth weight. Successful cattle breeding requires a thoughtful and balanced approach to optimize fertility, growth and carcass merit while improving profitability and effciency.

With all the data that comes with each bull, I’m sure at times it must beoverwhelming. In order to use body composition EPD’s of ultrasound data totheir full potential, a breeder must have an understanding of the ultrasoundterminology.

Several of the ultrasound measurements are comparable to the familiarcarcass measurements. The data is simply collected on yearling bulls andheifers instead of market ready steers. Take a step back from looking at thenumbers and become comfortable with the terminology.

RIB FAT: An external fat measurement taken between the 12th and 13thribs - the location a carcass would be split into quarters in the cooler reported in inches. Rib fat is the main factor in the USDA Yield Gradeequation.

RIBEYE AREA (REA): An area measurement of the longissimus dorsi, orribeye muscle - reported in square inches. This image tends to be the mostdifficult to collect and requires the most highly skilled interpretingtechnician. Both the rib fat and ribeye area measurements are taken fromthe same image.

RUMP FAT: An external fat measurement taken from an image collectedbetween the hooks and the pins of the animal, reported in inches. The rumpfat measurement coupled with the rib fat measurement, is used todetermine more accurately the overall external body fat, enhancing theaccuracy of predicting percent retail product (PRP). In most cases, an animalwill exhibit more fat over the rump than the rib due to physiological processof “laying on fat.”Therefore, more variation is often displayed in the rump fatmeasurements of a contemporary group than the rib fat. This image is highly repeatable and is the least difficult to collect or interpret.

INTRAMUSCULAR FAT (%IMF): This measurement determines the amount of fat within the muscle (similar to marbling) and is reported in “%”. This measurement should be collected when cattle are maintaining a high level of nutrition. The field technician collects four images and the valuesgenerated by the interpreting software are averaged for an overall %IMF.

The Angus Associations, both AAA and CAA have adopted the CUP(Centralized Ultrasound Processing) program for Ultrasounding Carcass Data and are using this information for formulating Carcass EPD’s. This is the 15th year we have provided ultrasound measurements as taken by certified technicians from Windy Ridge Livestock. We feel it is very important that you, our valued customer, know what is under the hide as that really does determine value. It has been determined through many studies that carcass traits are highly heritable and that feeding has only a marginal effect upon the resulting carcass- genetics determine carcass quality!

At Windy Ridge Ultrasound we have been working with beef carcass genetics for over 20 years. It has been a pleasure to work with Benchmark Angus, thus their continued pursuit for the best genetics there is to be found. I have found that the cattle we ultrasound at Benchmark Angus have some of the best marbling and muscling there is to be found in the Angus breed.

Efficiency is the bull selected by Mike and Myles Immerkar of Semex from the entire offering at Gardiners in the spring of 2007. He was described by Mark Gardiner as “one of the true power bulls of 2007.” His sire, an ABS roster bull, ranks at the top of the list with respect to every trait measured. Objective was the #2 bull for registrations in 2010 and has over 29,000 registered progeny. No sire can match his combination of $B and $W with such high accuracy. His dam is a paternal sister to Select Sires’ Raindance bull who is renowned for thick sound females who have great udders with small teat size. The EXT 704 cow on the bottom side sold for $40,000 and has generated in excess of $750,000 in progeny sales and is a full sister to EXT 614 who sold for a valuation of $400,000. Efficiency’s numbers are hard to beat, his sons are the right kind and his daughters are keepers.

Bismarck sired more calves in 2011 than any other sire. His low birth weight is much appreciated and he stamps his calves with exceptional muscle shape, volume and style. He is the sire of several hot AI bulls. His daughters are said to be moderate framed with great udder quality. We really like the Grid Maker bull but he does add some BW, so used Bismarck in his place. Bismarck has sired several top selling bulls at S A V and throughout the country.

Payoff is a bull we bought in partnership with Ole Farms in the spring of 2005. We were looking for a bull that would moderate frame, leaving thick, deep, easy-doing offspring with carcass quality second-to-none. After his six crops of calves were tested, his EPDs have proven very, very desirable. Study them carefully, they are hard to beat. Sired by the carcass great and calving-ease sire Future Direction, who shows Marbling of +0.87 and REA of +0.95, Payoff has lived up to every expectation. His calves are born so very easy and are the most vigorous calves we have encountered.

Payoff is a paternal brother to the very recent $55,000 Grand Champion at the Denver Angus Sale, 2008. Payoff’s dam has been reported to be at the very top of the list at Standard Hill. She is by RP 3RD Bushwacker, who is well known for his very productive females, as well as great WW and YW EPDs with carcass traits that reduce fat. It should be noted that Traveler 6G is a paternal brother to Gardens Prime Time, the sire of the No. 1 proven dam for IMF.

We really feel Payoff has become a critical step in our quest to develop cattle that will thrive in our environment and move forward our goal of “makin’ the grade. ” His sons have been very well accepted in our last four sales. Payoff hasexceptional numbers being inthe top 1% for BW, Milk, Calving Ease and Maternal Calving Ease; in the top 4% forREA and top 8% for Marbling. Payoff has been tested NHF and AMF.

Did we save the best for last? Could be. The fall of 2010 saw Valerie and I in Toronto for some Blue Jay baseball when we decided to run out to the Dunford Royal fall sale. I had orders just to look but couldn’t resist the moderate, very feminine 7022T cow. Her heifer calf, a full sister to Lot 66, brought big money to Jenkins Angus and Prairie Creek Angus from Illinois We brought the mom west. Lot 66 is sired by Adapter who is out of the same dam as Bismarck and Mandan, a couple of pretty popular bulls. He is quite a calf!

Red Basin EXT 45T5, alias, “Montana,” just gets better every day. We know of no other Red Angus bull that can comparewith the economic data he puts up. His progeny will excel for carcass quality; they will on average, be 54 pounds heavierat a year of age and 31 pounds heavier at weaning. When the carcasses are graded, they will bring back Grid Premiums. Itis real hard to find a Red Angus bull with the growth numbers combined with the REA and marbling numbers. They arejust not out there. He ranks in the top 1% of the breed for WW, YW, Milk, Total Maternal, REA, Carcass Weight,Marbling and Heifer Pregnancy. If there is a better Red Angus bull out there, please let us know, we want to be usinghim. He comes from Basin Angus in Montana and brings some of the very best outcross genetics available. His sire tracesto the Black breed giant N Bar Emulation EXT and features such Red genetics as Basin Sensation 702E, CherokeeCanyon 4912 and Glacier Logan. His sire also has a shot of Scotch Cap, QAS Traveler 23-4 and Rainmaker 340. Onthe dam’s side, she is an own daughter of the carcass giant Future Direction and further traces to Rainmaker 340, WillabarGay Gordon 67A, PS Power Play and Sayre Patriot. An unbelievable blending of the best of Black and Red Angusgenetics. “Montana” himself is exactly what we are looking for in a Red Angus herdsire: ease of calving, growth andgainability, along with breed-leading carcass genetics. “Montana” himself ratioed 111 for weaning weight, 113 foryearling weight, 110 for %IMF and 105 for ribeye area. Take a good look at the breed-changing bulls by “Montana,” justmight be another “Better Beef” among them; he’s the bull purchased by Six Mile last year.

He blends the best black genetics with the best of red genetics, bringing EXT, the most used black bull of all time; Future Direction, the carcass king; GDAR Rainmaker 340, recognized for his very feminine daughters; PS Power Play; Sitz Traveler 8180, the sire of SAV 8180 Traveler 004, the bull that made Schaff Angus Valley the outfit in North Dakota that sells 400 bulls on one day and averages north of $9,000; Red Basin Sensation 702E of Brylor fame; Rambo 502; Leachman None Better 9604; Ankonian Dynamo; Buffalo Creek Cherokee Canyon 4912; 5L Norseman King; Glacier Marias 548; Leachman King Rob; Red Bakers Century, twice Agribition Grand Champion; Red Premier Patriot 16 and there is a shot of Candoleir Forever 376 there as well. Maybe I got a little carried away here but just wanted to emphasize the fact that we believe in genetics, otherwise why register them.

Not only does Lot 67 carry the very best lineage possible, his numbers are beyond belief. He is in the top 1% of the breed for WW, YW, REA, Marbling, CW and Total Maternal, and in the top 5% for Heifer Pregnancy. Net Worth is none other than a grandson of S A V 8180 Traveler 004, the son of Sitz Traveler 8180 who put Schaff Valley on the map. Traveler 004 has no less than 7702 daughters on the registry. When looking for a red bull to breed to, it is hard to find a bull with the economic traits we are looking for. We need REA and Marbling with growth and adequate milk. He shows some BW in his EPD but for two years, we have bred him to heifers with no problems.

When the red cows were at Pincher Creek, we calved some in June and July; thus, AOD at 2 ½, so this is Dory 8127’s first calf. We leased the Serenade bull from Semex and Bar 5 the summer of 2007. He is from a Marias 548 daughter and shows a -4.1 for BW. Net Worth is a red bull featuring S A V 8180 Traveler 004 who made the Schaff Valley program in North Dakota. Net Worth brings outstanding growth and carcass numbers with adequate milk. Lot 75 shows good EPDs all the way through, being better than the top 10% in six categories.

From a two year old heifer that calved before her second birthday. We like this bull as good as any in the pen. He is in the top 2 or 3% for WW, YW, Marbling, Carcass Weight and Total Maternal and in the top 8% for REA. The Express daughters are fertile, have nice udders and as you can see, get the job done. On the bottom side, you have Glacier Logan, an ABS trait leader for Marbling, as well as some Get-A-Long and Six Mile genetics. I think this Lot 76 is going to get a long!
